Training 15 Hours a Week and Gaining Weight? What Guillermo Rodriguez’s DWTS Hunger Reveals

Guillermo Rodriguez has somehow turned a ballroom rehearsal schedule into a useful lesson about fat loss. While preparing for Dancing with the Stars, the 55-year-old said he had been rehearsing for roughly three hours a day, five days a week, for more than three weeks. Instead of watching the scale drop, he told Jimmy Kimmel that he was suddenly much hungrier after practice. A weigh-in on the show put him at 223 pounds, up from a reported 210 pounds in June.
The easy reaction is to assume something does not add up: surely 15 hours of dancing a week should guarantee weight loss. It does not. Exercise changes energy expenditure, but it can also change hunger, food choices, recovery needs, water balance and how much people move during the rest of the day. The scale then mixes all of those signals together.
Rodriguez's story is funny because even he joked that the extra weight was “pure muscle.” The useful fitness takeaway is more serious: harder training is not a mathematical promise that body weight will fall. You can become fitter, learn difficult choreography and dramatically increase activity while the scale moves sideways—or even upward.
What actually happened during Guillermo Rodriguez's DWTS training?

Rodriguez said rehearsals were running about three hours each weekday. That is around 15 hours of structured practice per week—a huge increase for someone who was not previously training like a competitive dancer. He also said his body hurt from the workload and that the most noticeable change was his appetite: after practice, he wanted to eat immediately.
The source story reported that Rodriguez had weighed 210 pounds on June 23. During the September check-in, the scale first read 227 pounds; after removing some clothing, it read 223. That is a 13-pound difference from the June number, but it is not a controlled body-composition experiment. The weigh-ins happened on different dates, under different conditions, and Rodriguez had already eaten dinner before the later measurement.
So we should not turn a TV gag into a claim that he gained 13 pounds of fat—or 13 pounds of muscle. What we can say is that his scale weight was higher during a period of dramatically increased dance training and that he personally identified stronger post-practice hunger as one reason he was eating more.
There is also an important timeline point: season 35 of Dancing with the Stars was due to premiere September 15, 2026. At this stage, Rodriguez was still in the rehearsal block, not at the end of a long, standardized transformation program. Fitness changes can show up in stamina, coordination and work capacity before they show up in a flattering scale trend.
Dance rehearsal is real conditioning—even when it does not look like “cardio”

Three hours in a dance studio is not the same as three hours of steady-state running. Rehearsal contains instruction, repetition, pauses, technical practice and bursts of harder movement. But the cumulative workload can still be substantial. You repeatedly accelerate, decelerate, change direction, hold posture, coordinate the trunk and hips, and reproduce movements while mentally learning choreography.
For a beginner, that can create a double stress: the cardiovascular system is doing more work while the muscles and connective tissues are also adapting to unfamiliar positions. Rodriguez's comment that his body hurt is not surprising. Novel exercise commonly produces soreness, and dance can hammer calves, feet, hips and trunk in ways that a person may not be used to.
The energy cost also adds up. You do not need an exact calorie estimate to understand the direction of the change. Going from ordinary daily activity to repeated multi-hour rehearsals raises weekly expenditure. The mistake is assuming the body passively accepts that deficit without changing anything else.
Humans are not treadmills with a perfect calorie counter. Some people unconsciously rest more after a hard session. Some become hungrier. Some reward themselves with larger portions. Others barely change their intake at all. Research on post-exercise appetite repeatedly shows large individual variability, which is why two people can follow similar training schedules and see very different scale outcomes.
Why harder exercise can make some people eat back the calories

Exercise does not automatically make everyone ravenous. In fact, acute bouts—especially harder sessions—can temporarily suppress appetite in some people. Reviews have linked that short-term effect to changes in hormones such as ghrelin and GLP-1. The important word is temporary.
Across longer training periods, appetite and eating responses are much less uniform. A systematic review of exercise training in adults with overweight or obesity found only small average changes in energy intake, but averages hide the people who compensate more and those who compensate less. Another study of post-exercise eating found striking differences between individuals even after the same prescribed exercise bout.
Psychology matters too. A recent scoping review found that people may eat more after exercise when the session feels like hard work, when they use food as a reward or when they believe they have “earned” extra calories. None of that requires a lack of discipline. It is a predictable interaction between hunger, reward and the mental accounting people do after demanding training.
Rodriguez's explanation is therefore perfectly plausible: a large jump in activity made him hungry, and he ate more after rehearsal. We cannot calculate his energy balance from the TV segment, but the mechanism is ordinary. If a workout burns a few hundred extra calories and the post-workout meal quietly grows by more than that, the expected deficit can disappear.
This is one reason exercise is a powerful health and fitness tool but a frustrating stand-alone fat-loss strategy for some people. Training can improve fitness, strength, insulin sensitivity, mood and work capacity even when body weight changes less than expected. Fat loss still depends on sustained energy balance over time, not on how exhausted a session feels.
The scale can rise for reasons that are not body fat

A 13-pound difference on two isolated weigh-ins tells us very little about where those pounds came from. Food and fluid in the digestive system can move scale weight quickly. A dinner before weighing can matter. Clothing matters. Sodium and carbohydrate intake matter. So does the inflammation and fluid retention that can accompany a sudden increase in training.
There is also glycogen. When muscles store carbohydrate as glycogen, water is stored alongside it. Cleveland Clinic notes that people who start exercising can see an initial increase of roughly one to three pounds from glycogen-associated water. That does not explain Rodriguez's entire reported change, but it illustrates why the scale is not a direct fat meter.
Muscle gain is another possibility over longer periods, although the idea that a 55-year-old beginner added 13 pounds of muscle in a few weeks of dance rehearsal is not realistic. His “pure muscle” line was a joke, not a physiological claim. Some lean tissue adaptation can occur with new activity, but the rate is far slower than the day-to-day noise of body weight.
For anyone starting a harder routine, the better method is to compare consistent morning weigh-ins over several weeks and look at the trend. Pair that with waist measurements, how clothes fit, performance and recovery. A single heavier day after a salty meal, a hard session or a restaurant dinner should not trigger a panic diet.
How to handle post-workout hunger without sabotaging recovery

The answer is not to finish a three-hour rehearsal and refuse to eat. That is a good way to make recovery worse and turn the next session into a grind. The goal is to refuel deliberately instead of arriving at the kitchen ravenous and improvising.
Start with protein. A meal containing a meaningful serving of protein supports muscle repair and is generally more filling than a snack built mostly from refined carbohydrate or fat. Add high-fiber foods—vegetables, fruit, potatoes, whole grains or legumes—so the meal has enough volume to satisfy the appetite that training created.
Replace carbohydrates in proportion to the work. Dancers, runners and hybrid athletes doing long sessions genuinely need carbohydrate. The mistake is treating every workout as permission for unlimited “recovery food.” A planned rice bowl, sandwich, fruit-and-yogurt meal or potatoes with lean protein is different from starting with a snack and continuing to graze because the workout felt brutal.
Hydrate before deciding you are still hungry. Long rehearsals mean sweating, and people often finish both hungry and thirsty. Replacing fluid does not erase true hunger, but it can make the recovery decision less chaotic. If the session was long and sweaty, sodium replacement can matter too.
Do not “eat back” a watch estimate as if it were cash. Wearables and cardio machines are useful for tracking trends, but calorie-burn estimates are not accurate enough to justify adding exactly the displayed number to your food budget. If fat loss is the goal, judge the plan by multi-week body-weight and waist trends instead.
Protect sleep and easy movement. A huge training increase can make people tired enough to become sedentary outside the workout. If three hours of practice leaves you on the couch for the rest of the day, total daily energy expenditure may rise less than the session alone suggests. Recovery is part of the equation.
The bigger lesson from Rodriguez's DWTS preparation is not that dance “doesn't work” for weight loss. It is that exercise creates a biological and behavioral response, not just a calorie subtraction. His workload is likely improving fitness and dance skill regardless of the scale. If weight loss were also the goal, the missing piece would be a consistent nutrition strategy that respects the new hunger rather than pretending it is not there.
Train because you want the adaptations—better conditioning, more strength, more skill, better health. Then manage food according to the body-composition goal. That approach is less dramatic than expecting 15 hours of weekly exercise to automatically melt weight, but it is far more reliable.
