Connor Bedard on the ice in Chicago Blackhawks practice gear during the 2026 season

Bedard Could Return Tuesday — Chicago's 1–5 Start Makes It Bigger Than One Game

GOATIFY

Connor Bedard has not played for Chicago this season, and the Blackhawks' 1-5-0 start has made his absence impossible to ignore. The 21-year-old captain could make his season debut against Pittsburgh on Tuesday. Chicago has struggled to score, and his possible return would give the team a much-needed offensive option.

Bedard's progress through team practices has accelerated, with a potential first game arriving well ahead of the November timetable originally discussed. His presence would reshape Chicago's top line, add a dangerous shooting option to the power play and put the new captain on the ice for the first time in 2026-27. That does not guarantee a win, but it would change the questions opposing coaches must answer when preparing for the Blackhawks.

Bedard is ahead of schedule — but the final decision is still medical

Chicago prepared for the first stretch of the season without Connor Bedard. The initial projection pointed toward November, so the possibility of an October 13 debut would represent an earlier-than-expected return. Chicago had to distribute its most important center's minutes and offensive responsibilities across the rest of the lineup, and the opening results showed how difficult that adjustment has been.

Bedard joined team practice on October 5 in a noncontact sweater. By Sunday, he had moved into regular team drills and was skating alongside teammates in a normal jersey. He participated again Monday. Coach Jeff Blashill said the Pittsburgh game remained a possibility, with Tuesday's morning skate providing another opportunity to assess his readiness. This was a meaningful progression, but not a formal announcement that he would be in the lineup.

Bedard has indicated that he expects to take face-offs when he returns. That detail matters because a center who can handle his usual assignments gives the coaching staff more freedom to keep its preferred lines together. Last season, his return from a different absence included a gradual resumption of certain responsibilities. It is therefore sensible to distinguish being available for a game from immediately playing every shift exactly as he did before the summer.

Chicago's 1-5-0 start makes the temptation to lean on its biggest star obvious. The more useful approach is to judge his return over several games rather than one dramatic night. If Bedard plays Tuesday, watch how comfortably he handles regular shifts, how the top line moves the puck and whether his presence creates space for teammates. If the club decides to wait, the progress already visible in practice will still be valuable. The long season matters more than a single October result.

A Bedard–Kane–Kantserov line could change how Chicago attacks

Bedard is expected to center Patrick Kane and Roman Kantserov when he is available. On paper, that combination offers a much more interesting offensive identity than a simple plan to feed the puck to one star. Kane brings patience and deception with the puck, Bedard can turn a small shooting window into a scoring chance, and Kantserov offers a younger, direct attacking presence. Whether the trio works in actual games will depend on how often it can win possession and where its shifts begin, but the proposed construction is revealing.

Kane's presence gives the line an unusual generational angle. The three-time Stanley Cup winner returned to Chicago in July on a two-year deal after time with the Rangers and Red Wings. He is no longer being asked to carry the franchise alone. Instead, his value may lie in helping the current centerpiece read defensive coverage and create options before opponents can set their structure. Two skilled passers can be redundant if both wait on the perimeter; they can also be extremely difficult to defend when one draws pressure and the other attacks the space it opens.

Kantserov adds a different variable. The young winger began his NHL career this season and is still adjusting to the pace and physical demands of North American competition. Playing with Bedard and Kane would provide opportunities, but it would also require quick decisions away from the puck. Supporting the puck carrier, arriving in dangerous areas and recovering loose pucks are less glamorous than a highlight-reel finish, yet those details determine whether a talented line spends time attacking or chasing.

Chicago's coaching staff also has to balance offense against defensive responsibility. An exciting first line does not automatically solve exits from the defensive zone or make the team better at protecting the middle of the ice. Blashill will need to choose matchups, support the trio with suitable defensemen and resist treating every early shift as a referendum on the experiment. If Bedard returns Tuesday, the most useful evidence will be the line's territorial control and quality of chances, not just whether its first shot goes in.

One goal in 14 power plays shows how badly Chicago needs a reset

Chicago Blackhawks players lined up on the ice during the 2026 season

Chicago has scored on just one of its first 14 power-play opportunities, a conversion rate of roughly 7.1 percent. That is not enough to conclude that the unit will struggle all season, but it is a serious early warning for a team that has found goals difficult to manufacture at even strength as well. Through six games the Blackhawks have scored 12 times and conceded 26. Those totals work out to two goals for and more than four against per game, an imbalance that cannot be repaired by a single successful power play.

Bedard can still change the shape of those possessions. His quick release forces defenders to respect the shooting lane, while his ability to change the angle of a shot creates uncertainty for penalty killers. Even when he does not score, the threat can pull a defender out of position and open a seam for a teammate. Kane's playmaking could complement that threat, particularly if Chicago moves the puck decisively instead of allowing a penalty-killing box to settle into a comfortable shape.

There is a catch: a power play is a five-player system, not a one-man shooting drill. Entries have to be clean enough to establish possession, the player at the net has to screen and retrieve, and the point must remain a credible option. If the Blackhawks repeatedly lose the first battle after an entry, Bedard's shot will not matter because the puck will be leaving the zone. The return of a high-end creator raises the ceiling; it does not remove the need for structure and execution.

Special teams can also mask broader problems for a short stretch. A hot power play might steal a game, but Chicago still has to limit dangerous chances against and sustain offense at five-on-five. The 26 goals allowed in six games suggest the coaching staff has plenty to address outside its scoring lines. The most realistic expectation is not that Bedard instantly makes Chicago a strong team. It is that his return creates more legitimate offensive sequences and reduces the burden on depth players who have been asked to generate chances without him.

Chicago's new captain is returning to a bigger test than Tuesday's score

Bedard's return will be his first game as the Blackhawks' captain if he is cleared to play. Chicago gave him the role in September, making him the second-youngest captain in franchise history behind Jonathan Toews. That symbolism is significant for a club trying to move beyond years of rebuilding. Bedard is not simply the best scorer on the roster; he is now one of the public faces of the team's standards, its accountability and its ambitions.

The organization reinforced that commitment in July with a five-year, $75 million extension. Bedard earned that investment through production that kept rising even when the team around him struggled. He led Chicago last season with 75 points, including 30 goals and 45 assists, in 69 games. Across his first 219 NHL games he recorded 203 points. Those numbers show that he has already become an elite offensive foundation, but they also underline how much of the club's attack has depended on him.

Chicago finished last in the Central Division in each of his first three seasons and has not played postseason hockey since the shortened 2019-20 campaign. The current 1-5-0 start does not mean the season is lost, yet it makes the gap between aspiration and performance plain. A single star can change matchups, power-play efficiency and the confidence of his linemates. He cannot by himself provide a complete defensive system, consistent goaltending support or scoring depth across four lines.

For that reason, the most revealing stretch will be the weeks after Bedard returns, not merely the first game. Can Chicago spend more time in the offensive zone when he is on the ice? Does the top line create repeatable chances rather than isolated flashes? Do young teammates take on more responsibility instead of waiting for No. 98 to solve every possession? Those are better indicators of development than a one-night points total. If the Blackhawks can turn his return into more balanced, sustainable hockey, the captaincy will start to mean something beyond the letter on his sweater.

Tuesday against Pittsburgh could mark an early comeback for Bedard, but Chicago has not confirmed his place in the lineup. The Blackhawks have every reason to welcome their top center back: their offense has stalled, the power play needs more invention and the proposed line with Kane and Kantserov offers a glimpse of a more dangerous team.

The important test is bigger than whether he scores in his first game. A healthy, confident Bedard can help Chicago establish an attacking identity that lasts beyond one October result. The club must still improve its defensive play, puck movement and scoring depth around him. If the return becomes the beginning of better team habits rather than another individual rescue mission, it will matter far more than one night's score.
