Kimi Antonelli in Mercedes colors during the 2026 Formula 1 season

Hamilton, Verstappen and Norris Conceded — Antonelli’s 81-Point Lead Feels Final

GOATIFY

Lewis Hamilton did not need another race to think about it. After retiring early in Madrid with a brake problem, the seven-time world champion looked at Kimi Antonelli’s latest victory, Mercedes’ growing advantage and the 2026 standings and reached the conclusion the rest of Formula 1 is increasingly circling around: the championship is Antonelli’s to lose.

Hamilton was not alone. Max Verstappen and Lando Norris have now expressed essentially the same view. Antonelli left Madrid with his eighth win in 14 rounds and an 81-point advantage over Mercedes teammate George Russell. Hamilton is 101 points behind, Norris 106 back and Verstappen 147 adrift. Mercedes has also opened a 145-point constructors’ lead over Ferrari, with McLaren another 52 points behind the Scuderia.

Mathematically, there is still racing to do. Competitively, the mood has changed. The rivals are no longer talking like drivers waiting for the championship leader to reveal a weakness. They are talking like drivers who understand that only a major reversal can reopen the fight.

Three champions are saying the same thing now

Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari during the 2026 Madrid Formula 1 weekend

Hamilton’s Madrid weekend made the contrast especially sharp. He started fourth, gained a place on the opening lap and briefly looked positioned for a useful result behind the leading group. Then a brake problem ended his race on lap seven and gave him his first points blank of the season.

At almost the same moment Hamilton’s championship hopes were taking another hit, Antonelli was moving toward another maximum-score Sunday. The Mercedes driver did not control every phase of the race — Norris had led by more than six seconds before the Virtual Safety Car changed the strategic order — but Antonelli was there to capitalize when the race moved his way.

That is the part his rivals are finding hardest to answer. Antonelli has the outright speed to win when Mercedes is strongest, but he has also become remarkably good at collecting the biggest result available when a weekend becomes messy. Eight wins in 14 rounds is already championship-level production. An 81-point margin turns it into control.

Verstappen and Norris have arrived at a similar assessment from different positions. Verstappen remains capable of putting Red Bull near the front on the right weekend, but a 147-point deficit requires far more than a normal run of wins. Norris has genuine race-winning McLaren pace, as Madrid showed before strategy turned against him, yet he still left the weekend 106 points behind Antonelli.

Hamilton’s conclusion therefore matters less as a dramatic surrender than as confirmation of a paddock-wide reality. The title is not mathematically finished. The burden has simply shifted. Antonelli no longer needs to prove he can build a championship lead. Everyone else has to prove they can make him lose one.

An 81-point cushion changes how Antonelli can race

George Russell driving Mercedes during the 2026 Formula 1 season

Russell is still the nearest challenger, and that makes the internal Mercedes comparison the most important one left. But 81 points is a very different problem from 20 or 30. Russell cannot simply beat Antonelli by a few places each weekend and expect the gap to disappear. He needs victories, larger swings and probably at least one weekend where the championship leader scores very little.

Antonelli does not need to respond by becoming conservative. That may be the most dangerous part for the field. He has led the championship for 13 consecutive races, won at Monza to become the first Italian Formula 1 winner there in decades and followed it by taking Madrid’s inaugural victory. The results have allowed him to keep approaching weekends as opportunities rather than exercises in damage limitation.

The records are accumulating with the points. Antonelli became the youngest driver to lead the Formula 1 championship and is positioned to become the youngest champion if he completes the job. He is also carrying the kind of national expectation that can overwhelm a young driver, yet his public posture remains deliberately narrow: maximize each weekend, avoid thinking too far ahead and let the standings become decisive only when the calendar forces the issue.

That approach is logical because the championship arithmetic already protects him. If a rival wins and Antonelli finishes second or third, the gap shrinks slowly. If the rivals split victories among themselves, the leader benefits even more. And if Mercedes remains the strongest overall package, Antonelli has Russell beside him taking points away from Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull.

Mercedes has made the constructors’ fight look just as final

The drivers’ championship gets the attention, but Mercedes’ team advantage explains why Antonelli’s position feels so secure. The constructors’ lead over Ferrari is 145 points, and McLaren is another 52 behind Ferrari. That is not the profile of a team surviving on one driver’s brilliance. It is the profile of the grid’s strongest season-long operation.

Russell remains second in the drivers’ standings despite having only two wins to Antonelli’s eight. That consistency means Mercedes can have a weekend where Antonelli is merely good rather than dominant and still put another car between him and several championship rivals. It also reduces the strategic pressure on the leader. Mercedes does not have to choose desperate tactics to protect a narrow advantage; it can usually race from the front of the field.

Madrid offered another example. Norris arguably had the strongest race before the Virtual Safety Car, Verstappen finished second and Hamilton’s Ferrari showed competitive early speed before the brake failure. None of that stopped Mercedes from leaving with the winner, the championship leader and an even stronger title position.

There are still enough races left for reliability, crashes, penalties or a sudden competitive swing to change the picture. Formula 1 championships rarely end exactly when the paddock first decides they are over. But the language around Antonelli has shifted because the evidence has become repetitive: different circuit, different race shape, same leader extending or protecting the advantage.

For Hamilton, Verstappen, Norris and even Russell, the target is no longer simply to beat Antonelli next time. They need to beat him repeatedly and hope the season finally gives the Mercedes driver the kind of bad weekend he has largely avoided.

Until that happens, the most revealing part of Madrid may not be Antonelli’s eighth win. It may be that three world champions looked at the standings afterward and stopped pretending the title race still depends only on their own performance.
