UFC Won’t Wait for Tom Aspinall — Heavyweight Division Is Moving Anyway

Heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall remains sidelined by the serious eye injuries he suffered against Ciryl Gane in October 2025, with no confirmed return date despite encouraging signs during his recovery.
The key change is not a new medical update. It is the willingness to keep the division moving while Aspinall completes the testing still required before he can compete. That immediately matters for interim champion Gane, former light-heavyweight champion Alex Pereira, rising heavyweight Josh Hokit and a November Madison Square Garden card that could need a major title fight.
Aspinall is still champion, but the division cannot stay frozen
Aspinall's absence traces back to the double eye poke that ended his first title defense against Gane in a no contest. The aftermath was much more serious than a routine fouling controversy. His eyesight and day-to-day function were affected, training stopped, and recovery required a long medical process rather than a simple return-to-sparring timetable.
There have been positive developments, but his management has made clear that more testing is still needed before a return can be finalized. UFC leadership, meanwhile, has said there is no new health update and that the heavyweight division will continue operating until that changes.
That distinction matters. Moving the division forward does not automatically mean stripping Aspinall. It can mean booking contender fights, elevating an interim-title defense or creating another high-stakes matchup while the undisputed champion remains medically unavailable. The promotion needs flexibility because every additional month of uncertainty affects Gane and the rest of the rankings.

Gane, Pereira and Hokit now have a reason to push
Gane is the obvious center of the active title picture because he holds the interim belt. Pereira has already called for another fight with him after their controversial meeting, and that request becomes much more relevant if Aspinall cannot be ready for the fall schedule. A rematch would give the UFC a proven marquee pairing and a heavyweight title hook without forcing Aspinall back before the medical process is complete.
Hokit offers a different kind of pressure. He has gone 4-0 since arriving in the UFC and is openly asking for the opportunity his run has earned. He does not carry Pereira's global drawing power, but an active heavyweight contender with momentum is exactly what the division needs after so much uncertainty at the top.
The Madison Square Garden card adds urgency. Aspinall-Gane 2 has long made sense as a potential centerpiece, but the promotion cannot build an entire event around a return date that does not exist. If Aspinall is not cleared in time, Gane defending the interim title or another major heavyweight fight could become the practical solution.
The best outcome remains simple: Aspinall gets full medical clearance, the champion returns safely and the titles are unified. Until that happens, the UFC has reached the point where waiting carries its own cost. The heavyweight division has challengers, a marketable interim champion and major events that need meaningful fights. Keeping it moving is no longer just an option; it may be the only workable plan.
