Philadelphia Didn’t Expect to Win the Jaylen Brown Sweepstakes

Brown had spent his entire NBA career in Boston, won a championship there, earned Finals MVP honors and remained one of the league’s most valuable two-way wings. A trade inside the Atlantic Division always looked difficult.
The dynamic changed when Brown’s availability became more public during Boston’s pursuit of another superstar. Once it became clear that the Celtics were willing to consider reshaping their core, the Sixers had a window. Philadelphia still had to overcome the natural reluctance of a contender sending an established star to a rival it could repeatedly meet in the playoffs.
The eventual price reflected that tension. Philadelphia sent Paul George and four draft picks to Boston, including two first-round selections. The package gave the Celtics immediate veteran talent plus future assets, while the Sixers acquired a 29-year-old star coming off a career season in which he averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists.
Minnesota’s Interest Shows How Different the Market Could Have Looked
Philadelphia was not the only team exploring Brown. Minnesota also reportedly held real discussions with Boston before deciding the acquisition cost was too high. The Timberwolves ultimately went in another direction and acquired LaMelo Ball from Charlotte, giving their roster a very different offensive identity.
That alternate path shows how close the league came to a dramatically different balance of power. Put Brown alongside Minnesota’s existing athleticism and the Timberwolves become a more physical, switchable team. Put Ball there instead and the emphasis shifts toward pace, passing and creation.
For Boston, the Minnesota talks also reinforce that the Celtics were testing the market for a return that could preserve flexibility while still giving them meaningful assets. The Sixers ultimately offered a combination Boston valued enough to accept despite the rivalry.
Brown’s Arrival Helped Make the LeBron Move More Realistic
The Brown trade became even more important when Philadelphia landed LeBron James later in July. Brown reportedly played a role in recruiting James, giving the Sixers another accomplished star who could sell the idea that Philadelphia was ready to compete immediately.
The resulting lineup is loaded with high-end talent. Brown joins James, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe on a team that can attack in several different ways. Brown does not need to monopolize the ball to have an impact, which makes his fit particularly valuable next to creators such as James and Maxey.
He also gives Philadelphia a perimeter defender capable of handling difficult wing assignments while still producing elite scoring volume. Trading premium assets for Brown sent a message that Philadelphia was not interested in a cautious retool. Adding James afterward reinforced it.
The Celtics-Sixers Rivalry Now Has a New Centerpiece
Brown will not have to wait long for the emotional part of the trade to arrive. Philadelphia opens its regular season on the road against New York, while the reunion with Boston comes in November. By then, both teams should have a clearer idea of what their reshaped rosters actually look like.
Boston enters the new era with George and additional draft capital. Philadelphia enters it with Brown as a central part of perhaps the league’s most star-heavy starting group. Every meeting between the teams now comes with an obvious referendum attached: who made the better bet?
The answer will not be decided by one game. Brown is still in his prime, the Sixers have committed heavily to winning around him, and Boston’s draft compensation could take years to evaluate. But the short-term stakes are immediate. Philadelphia turned what it believed was a long-shot pursuit into a franchise-altering trade.
