Charles Leclerc Faces More Medical Checks After Heavy Monza Crash

The Ferrari driver walked away from a heavy impact at the Parabolica and was released from the circuit medical centre without an immediate injury diagnosis. The more important update came afterwards: Leclerc said his vision in his right eye had briefly been affected after the crash and confirmed that he would undergo additional checks before the Spanish Grand Prix.
Leclerc expects to be fit, but the situation is not completely closed. Ferrari now has two separate issues to resolve in a very short window: making sure its driver is fully cleared to race and understanding exactly why the SF-26 snapped away from him so violently on the second lap at Monza.
Leclerc’s Monza Race Went From Ferrari Fight to Heavy Crash in Two Laps
Leclerc started the Italian Grand Prix third, directly ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton, and Ferrari’s home race became chaotic almost immediately. The two red cars fought closely through the opening corners, with Hamilton forced into the gravel during their first-lap battle.
Leclerc continued in the leading group, but the race ended at the Parabolica on lap two while he was under pressure from Oscar Piastri. The rear of the Ferrari stepped away at high speed and Leclerc could not recover the car before it hit the barriers. The impact was heavy enough for race control to stop the Grand Prix with a red flag while the damaged barriers were repaired.
The positive first sign was that Leclerc climbed out of the SF-26 under his own power. He was taken to the medical centre for precautionary checks and later released. Ferrari therefore avoided the worst possible outcome from a crash that looked violent from the outside.
But walking away was not the end of the story. Leclerc later explained that his neck felt fine, while his right-eye vision had initially been the part that worried him most. He said the vision problem had resolved by the time he spoke after the race, although he was still dealing with the kind of general soreness that can follow a large impact.
That is why the next step is additional evaluation rather than simply assuming the Madrid weekend will proceed normally.
The Vision Issue Makes the Madrid Checks More Than a Formality
Leclerc’s own expectation is encouraging. He believes he should be ready for Madrid and described the extra examinations as the sensible way to make sure nothing was missed after the initial circuit checks.
Still, a Formula 1 driver returning only days after a high-speed accident has to satisfy a much higher standard than simply feeling better on Monday morning. Vision, reaction speed, neck comfort and the ability to tolerate the physical loads of another race weekend all matter when the driver is about to return to a cockpit capable of enormous acceleration, braking and cornering forces.
There is no indication at this stage that Leclerc has been ruled out. The important distinction is that he has not treated his initial medical-centre release as the final word. More checks were planned after Monza, and his participation in Madrid depends on being fully cleared.
That leaves Ferrari with a short turnaround. The Spanish Grand Prix weekend at the new Madrid circuit begins only days after the Italian race, so there is little recovery time between one of Leclerc’s biggest crashes of the season and the next set of practice sessions.
From Ferrari’s perspective, caution is the obvious priority. Leclerc is one of the team’s two race winners this season, and there is no competitive upside in rushing a return if any concern remains. If the checks are clean, Madrid becomes the immediate chance to respond. If they are not, Ferrari would have to prepare for the possibility of changing its driver plans at short notice.
Ferrari Still Has to Understand Why the SF-26 Snapped at Parabolica
The medical checks are only one part of Ferrari’s post-Monza work. The team also needs to understand what happened to the car.
Leclerc did not immediately blame a mechanical failure. Instead, he pointed to an unusual sensation in the power delivery. He had noticed something similar on the first lap, briefly coming off the throttle and then reapplying it. When the same feeling returned on lap two, the car snapped away from him before he could save it.
That description does not prove that the Ferrari suffered a technical problem. Leclerc was careful not to make a firm claim before seeing the data, and that distinction matters. The crash happened at a corner where throttle application, rear grip, kerb use and the exact placement of the car can combine to create a sudden loss of traction.
What Ferrari can establish from telemetry is whether the power delivery behaved as commanded, whether there was an unexpected torque change, and how the rear tyres were loaded immediately before the spin. Until that analysis is complete, calling the crash either a pure driver error or a confirmed car problem would go beyond what is known.
For Madrid, the answer matters even if Leclerc is fully fit. If the car behaved unexpectedly, Ferrari needs to understand and eliminate the cause. If the data shows the SF-26 responded normally, Leclerc can approach the next race with a clearer picture of where the Monza sequence went wrong.
Either way, the team has very little time to separate the physical recovery from the technical investigation.
Madrid Is Now a Recovery Weekend for Both Leclerc and Ferrari
Monza was already a difficult result for Ferrari before the medical uncertainty entered the picture. Leclerc retired on lap two, Hamilton recovered only to sixth, and Mercedes left Italy with a one-two finish led by championship leader Kimi Antonelli.
For Leclerc personally, the frustration is obvious. Ferrari arrived at its home race with huge attention on both cars, and his afternoon effectively ended before the Grand Prix had settled into its first stint. He cannot recover those points, but Madrid gives him an immediate opportunity to prevent one bad weekend from becoming two.
The first requirement is simply being cleared to drive. After that, the challenge becomes mental and technical: returning to a new circuit only days after a major impact while Ferrari is also evaluating whether anything unusual happened in the car.
There is also a larger team context. Ferrari’s Monza weekend included the opening-lap fight between Leclerc and Hamilton, questions over how the two drivers should race each other, an early crash, and another race where Mercedes took a large points haul. The team cannot afford to carry that disorder into the next event.
Leclerc has already made clear that he wants to move forward rather than dwell on the result. That is probably the simplest way to frame Madrid. If the medical checks are clean and Ferrari finds no unresolved technical concern, the new Spanish race becomes a chance to reset immediately.
If either question remains open, however, Ferrari’s preparation becomes much more complicated.
For now, Leclerc’s own message is cautiously positive: the vision issue that concerned him immediately after the crash had resolved, he expects the additional checks to confirm he is fine, and his focus is on returning in Madrid. The next update will determine whether Ferrari can treat Monza as a brutal one-off or whether the crash continues to shape another Grand Prix weekend.
