New York Knicks championship core celebrating the 2026 NBA title

Knicks Kept Their Champions — LeBron's Sixers Make the Repeat Test Immediate

GOATIFY

The New York Knicks will begin their first NBA title defense in 53 years with almost everything that made them champions still intact. Jalen Brunson remains the closer, Karl-Anthony Towns gives the offense an unusual passing and spacing dimension, and Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby know exactly how to complement the stars. In an NBA that has produced eight different champions in eight seasons, that continuity is a genuine competitive advantage.

But the league has not stood still for the defending champions. LeBron James left Los Angeles for Philadelphia, where he joins Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe. The 76ers will visit Madison Square Garden on October 20, immediately after New York raises its championship banner. That is an extraordinary stage for a new superteam's regular-season debut, and it puts the two biggest questions of the Eastern Conference on the same floor: can the Knicks preserve the habits that won a title, and can Philadelphia make its enormous individual talent function as one team?

The Knicks' real offseason win was keeping the title-winning core together

It is easy to underestimate the value of a contender not having to introduce itself again. New York returns Brunson, Hart, Bridges, Anunoby and Towns, the five players at the center of its championship identity. They have already learned who handles the difficult possessions, who covers a missed rotation and who can change a game without needing a play drawn up for him. That familiarity is not a guarantee of another parade, but it removes months of experimentation that several challengers still face.

Brunson is the clearest example. His 45-point performance in the title-clinching fifth game against San Antonio showed how much trust the Knicks place in his decisions under pressure. He can create a shot late in the clock, but his greater value is knowing when a possession should belong to somebody else. Towns stretches defenses away from the basket and can facilitate from the elbow. Hart turns rebounds into early offense, while Bridges and Anunoby supply the size and defensive assignments that prevent Brunson from having to win every battle at both ends.

There are practical reasons the same core can improve. Anunoby and Bridges can be used as cutters rather than stationary outlets. Towns can punish aggressive help with quick passes. Brunson's presence makes the defense commit before a second action begins. The defending champions do not need a completely new playbook; they need more efficient versions of the actions opponents have spent a summer studying.

The risk is that familiarity becomes predictability. Opponents now have a full playoff run to dissect, and the Knicks will be everybody's measuring-stick game. Maintaining a recognizable identity while adding enough wrinkles to stay difficult to scout is the challenge that begins the moment the championship celebration ends.

LeBron's arrival gives Philadelphia a different problem: distributing the ball

Philadelphia has collected a startling amount of individual creation. James can run an offense from the top, Embiid can draw double teams inside, Maxey thrives when the floor opens, and Brown can attack defenders who are already shifting. Edgecombe adds another explosive option. In isolation, that looks like the kind of roster built to frighten a defending champion. In a five-man lineup, the question is how those skills share the same ball and the same space.

James is entering his 24th NBA season at 41. His passing vision remains a weapon even when he is not hunting his own shot, and a team with Embiid and Maxey offers him obvious targets. But every possession he orchestrates is one Maxey does not begin with a live dribble, and every Embiid post touch changes the locations available to the wings. The best version of the 76ers will not be five stars taking turns. It will be one advantage created by James or Embiid becoming an easier finish for somebody else.

Brown's arrival from Boston is especially important. He has the strength to attack a closeout and the athleticism to defend demanding wing matchups. Philadelphia can stagger creators so that a high-level scorer is on the floor at nearly every moment, rather than requiring the starting five to solve every problem together. The bench combinations and defensive communication will matter as much as the opening-night introductions.

New York is a useful opponent for exposing those growing pains. Bridges and Anunoby can challenge first options without constant help, Hart will compete for loose possessions, and Brunson will force Philadelphia to make decisions about where to hide a weaker defender. The Sixers may eventually have the higher offensive ceiling. The Knicks enter the matchup with a clearer sense of which five-man decisions are already automatic.

Banner night will be emotional — then it becomes a serious basketball exam

Karl-Anthony Towns in New York Knicks uniform during the 2026 season

October 20 has a ready-made script: New York celebrates the championship it waited more than half a century to see, then faces the most recognizable player of his generation wearing a rival's uniform. James has spoken about the possibility of joining the Knicks before their title changed the circumstances. Instead, he will be present for the ceremony as the leader of a Philadelphia team built to take the next banner away.

The occasion will dominate the pregame coverage, but the useful information starts after tipoff. Watch how the Knicks defend the James–Embiid actions. A simple switch could leave a smaller player on Embiid, while sending two defenders toward the paint can free Maxey or Brown on the perimeter. New York's wings have the size to absorb some of those mismatches, but repeated decisions across an entire game will reveal whether Philadelphia can force the champions out of their preferred coverages.

At the other end, Towns offers a direct test of Philadelphia's defensive organization. His shooting can pull a traditional big away from the rim, opening driving lanes for Brunson. If the Sixers counter with a smaller lineup, Towns can punish it on the glass or make quick passes over a rotating defense. The Knicks' 122-120 preseason win over Toronto offered a reminder of his playmaking range: he finished with 13 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists, rather than simply collecting his usual scoring total.

One opening-night result will not settle a title race. New combinations can be awkward in October and outstanding by spring. Still, it will show which team can get to a dependable shot when the first action breaks down, which can defend without excessive help, and which has enough shared experience to survive a difficult five-minute stretch. The ceremony belongs to the past. Those answers belong to the season ahead.

Eight champions in eight years explain why repeating is so difficult

Victor Wembanyama with the San Antonio Spurs in 2026

The Knicks are not trying to repeat in a league with one obvious rival. Eight different champions across the previous eight seasons is a measure of how quickly an NBA hierarchy can change. The salary-cap and apron system makes it expensive to keep adding established stars, and the modern playoff field can punish even a favorite that enters a series with one injury or one unfavorable matchup.

San Antonio has the most personal reason to challenge New York. Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs were on the losing end of the 2026 Finals, and the combination of his rim protection, scoring reach and developing teammates makes them a different problem from a traditional contender. Oklahoma City, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, is chasing another championship with an established identity of its own. Golden State still has Stephen Curry and the experience to turn a series into a shot-making contest, even while its roster continues to evolve.

New York's edge over those teams is not necessarily superior top-end talent. It is a lineup that has already won four playoff series together, including the most important one. The downside is that opponents will be better prepared. A rival can choose to load up on Brunson, force Towns into uncomfortable defensive decisions or test the Knicks' secondary creators when the initial plan stalls. The answer has to be better execution, not simply more confidence.

That is why the early-season standings may be less revealing than the habits beneath them. Does New York protect the ball against pressure? Can its wings create offense when the defense takes Brunson away? Does its rebounding travel against bigger teams? Does the bench preserve the identity when starters rest? These questions matter over 82 games and become even sharper in May and June. Continuity gives the champions a head start, but it cannot remove the league's central challenge: every serious contender is trying to build the next answer to the team that just won.

New York has done the hardest offseason work already: it kept the players and relationships that carried the franchise to its first title since 1973. Brunson, Towns, Hart, Bridges and Anunoby do not have to discover their identity in training camp. They have to defend it against teams that have spent months studying how to break it.

Philadelphia is the immediate test because James, Embiid, Maxey and Brown can create problems few teams have the personnel to answer. San Antonio, Oklahoma City and the rest of the league make the longer challenge even more daunting. The Knicks' banner will go up on October 20, but the case for another one begins with the basketball played underneath it.
