Kyler Murray Is Out: What Carson Wentz Changes for Vikings-Bears

GOATIFY

Minnesota's quarterback plan changed again before one of the first important NFC North games of the season. Kyler Murray has been ruled out against Chicago while he continues through the concussion protocol, which means Carson Wentz will make his 100th career NFL start. The Vikings are not entering the game cold: Wentz already rescued their opener after Murray left early, throwing three touchdowns as Minnesota erased a 22-10 deficit and beat Green Bay 39-22.

That gives Kevin O'Connell a rare kind of backup-quarterback problem. The Vikings would obviously prefer to have the starter they chose in August, but Wentz has already shown that the offense can function around him. Against a healthy Bears team led by Caleb Williams, Minnesota now has to prove that one explosive comeback can become a repeatable formula.

Sitting Kyler Murray is the right short-term decision

Murray's Vikings debut lasted only 11 snaps before a hard hit against Green Bay sent him into the concussion protocol. He returned to limited practice work during the week, but Minnesota ruled him out for Sunday. O'Connell has indicated that Murray is progressing and could clear the protocol early next week.

For a player whose mobility is central to his game, there is little reason to force the timeline. Murray was signed to revive his career after an injury-hit finish in Arizona, and Minnesota needs the version of him that can threaten defenses with both his arm and his legs. A September divisional game matters, but not enough to compromise the larger plan.

The encouraging part is that the Vikings do not have to improvise their entire offense. Wentz spent 2025 in O'Connell's system, re-signed in March and entered this season as the No. 2 quarterback. He knows the terminology, the protections and the skill players around him.

Carson Wentz earned this start with his Week 1 response

Carson Wentz with the Minnesota Vikings

Wentz's first appearance of 2026 was almost the ideal emergency performance. He completed 12 of 19 passes for 133 yards, threw three touchdowns without an interception and helped Minnesota score the final 29 points against Green Bay. His 123.5 passer rating mattered, but the bigger takeaway was that the offense did not become cautious when the starter disappeared.

Sunday will be different. Chicago has a full week to prepare for Wentz rather than adjusting to him during a game. The Bears can build their pressure plan around a quarterback who is less dangerous as a runner than Murray and try to force longer third downs.

Wentz also carries a useful amount of experience into that challenge. This will be career start No. 100, and he has already played meaningful snaps for Minnesota. The Vikings do not need him to recreate the peak version of his Philadelphia years. They need decisive throws, protection of the football and enough vertical aggression to stop Chicago from crowding the line of scrimmage.

Justin Jefferson can keep the offense from shrinking

The best reason to believe Minnesota can survive a quarterback change is Justin Jefferson. He caught eight passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns in the opener, giving Wentz an elite answer whenever the offense needed a high-value target. That connection can prevent the Vikings from turning into a conservative, run-only team.

O'Connell can also use Jefferson's gravity to make life easier elsewhere. Motion, condensed formations and play-action can force Chicago to declare coverage, while T.J. Hockenson and Jordan Addison can attack the space created when the Bears tilt help toward Jefferson. The objective should be to make Wentz's reads clear rather than asking him to manufacture offense after the play breaks down.

Minnesota is also dealing with other absences, including running back Jordan Mason on injured reserve and Jauan Jennings unavailable this week. That makes efficiency around the core playmakers even more important. Jefferson does not need 15 targets for the offense to work, but Chicago has to feel his presence on almost every passing down.

Vikings-Bears is already an NFC North leverage game

Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears in an NFC North matchup

Both teams enter the matchup 1-0, so the winner gets an early divisional advantage. Chicago's Week 1 explosion showed what Caleb Williams can do when Ben Johnson's offense is operating at full speed. Minnesota's defense therefore cannot assume Wentz and the offense will have the luxury of winning a low-scoring game.

The matchup also puts pressure on Brian Flores' defense to disrupt Williams without giving away explosive plays when he escapes. Minnesota's offense can help by sustaining drives and keeping the Bears from turning the game into a possession-for-possession shootout.

For the Vikings, the ideal outcome is bigger than simply getting to 2-0. If Wentz can beat Green Bay and Chicago in consecutive weeks while Murray recovers, Minnesota will have protected its season without rushing its new starter back. It would also validate the decision to keep an experienced backup in a quarterback room that has already dealt with instability.

Murray remains the long-term story because Minnesota chose him to start. This week, though, belongs to Wentz. His 100th start arrives with a real opportunity: beat a healthy divisional rival, keep the Vikings unbeaten and hand the offense back to Murray without losing momentum.
