Kyrie Irving Will Play Just One Game in Macao — Dallas Has Bigger Questions to Answer

GOATIFY

Kyrie Irving is finally close to wearing a Dallas Mavericks uniform in a game again. But the first step of his comeback will be deliberately small: coach Dusty May says the nine-time All-Star will appear in one of Dallas's two preseason games against the Houston Rockets in Macao, not both. As of Thursday, October 8, the Mavericks had not chosen which game. May cited Irving's physical response to the long journey and the limited roster available for the trip.

That uncertainty matters more than the exhibition score. Irving has not played an NBA game since tearing the ACL in his left knee on March 3, 2025. Dallas has since moved into a different era, with reigning Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg at its center and May entering his first NBA season as head coach. The NBA China Games on October 9 and 11 offer a first public glimpse of how those pieces might fit together—without pretending one preseason appearance can answer every question.

One Game, Not Two: Why Dallas Is Protecting Irving's Return

Coach Dusty May has made the return plan clear: Kyrie Irving will appear in only one of Dallas's two preseason games in Macao. The staff has not chosen Friday or Sunday. May wants to see how Irving responds to the long journey, time-zone change and practice work before committing to a date. Dallas will also use a limited roster. The decision is about managing a comeback, not predicting the result of either exhibition.

The Mavericks are managing a long recovery.

His last NBA appearance came against Sacramento in March 2025. He made two free throws before leaving the game, then missed the final 20 games of that season. He was absent for the entire 2025-26 campaign, leaving Dallas without its veteran point guard for more than a year.

His recovery was not a straight line. Local reporting this week described a December calf problem that pushed the timetable back by about eight weeks. The additional delay helps explain why Dallas is treating this trip as a measured return rather than a full competitive workload.

Before the absence, Irving averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 50 games. He shot 47.3% overall and 40.1% from three-point range. Those numbers underline what Dallas missed: a creator who can beat a defender and produce quality shots late in possessions.

Irving said at September's media day that he entered camp without physical restrictions. But that does not mean every competitive demand has been tested. Practices and scrimmages help rebuild timing, while a live game brings different decisions and contact.

May is also evaluating Irving for the first time as Dallas's coach. The team opened camp early because of the China trip. Limiting Irving to one appearance gives the staff time to observe his movement and recovery before the regular season, without assuming that two games are automatically better than one.

The First Irving–Flagg Test Comes on a Global Stage

Cooper Flagg at Dallas Mavericks training camp in 2025

The larger story is the possibility of seeing Irving alongside Cooper Flagg in an NBA game for the first time. Flagg arrived as the No. 1 pick in 2025 after Irving's absence began. He became Rookie of the Year while the veteran watched from the sidelines. They have practiced together but have not shared regular-season minutes.

Flagg's rookie averages were 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists. He also became the first teenager to score 50 points in an NBA game. Those achievements established him as a primary creator. His next challenge is learning when to initiate possessions and when to attack the openings that another gifted ball-handler creates.

Irving's handle and pull-up shooting force defenders to make uncomfortable choices. In theory, that can free Flagg for cuts, secondary drives and easier catch-and-shoot looks. Flagg's size and passing could also allow Dallas to start actions with Irving away from the ball. Those are tactical possibilities, not conclusions: a handful of preseason possessions cannot establish lasting chemistry.

Dallas needs answers after finishing 26-56 and missing the playoffs. Team president Masai Ujiri is building around Flagg. New coach Dusty May is testing different lineup combinations instead of rushing to declare a starting five.

Houston makes an intriguing opponent for the trial. The Rockets feature Kevin Durant, Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson, giving Dallas a demanding mix of scoring, passing and athleticism. The club also has a special connection to Chinese basketball fans through former center Yao Ming. Even so, preseason rotations are not a reliable forecast of the final standings.

The setting matters too. The Venetian Arena hosted NBA preseason basketball in Macao in 2025, and the league is returning with another two-game program. NBA House, fan activities and youth events surround the exhibitions. This is both a basketball trip and an opportunity for the Mavericks to engage with an international audience.

The NBA's official schedule lists Friday, October 9 at 8 p.m. Macao time and Sunday, October 11 at 6 p.m. Both games are scheduled for NBA TV and League Pass. Dallas then hosts New Orleans on October 14 and Atlanta on October 16 before opening the regular season in Houston on October 21.

The first Irving–Flagg minutes, if they happen in Macao, will be more useful for observing decisions than judging shooting percentages. Watch who brings the ball up, who sets the screen and how the defense reacts. The Mavericks will learn more from those patterns than from the scoreboard of an exhibition.

The Mavericks have waited 19 months for this moment, but their goal is not to win an October exhibition at the expense of Irving's long-term health. May's one-game plan recognizes that the first live minutes after an ACL tear are a checkpoint, not a finish line. The unanswered questions are which Macao game he will play, how comfortable he looks against real defenders and whether his partnership with Flagg shows early promise.

Dallas will learn more as the preseason continues and the minutes increase. For now, the clearest development is that Irving is available to take the next step—and that the franchise he returns to is no longer the one he left in March 2025.
