Michael Morales Called Out the Entire Welterweight Elite — Now the UFC Has to Pick One

GOATIFY

Michael Morales has spent most of 2026 waiting while the UFC welterweight title picture moved around him. Now the unbeaten Ecuadorian is trying to force his way back into the center of it. Morales publicly challenged champion Islam Makhachev, Carlos Prates, Shavkat Rakhmonov and Ian Machado Garry, making the point simple: if the division needs one more fight to decide the next challenger, he wants the hardest available option.

The timing is what makes the callout matter. Morales is 7-0 in the UFC and has finished Sean Brady, Gilbert Burns and Neil Magny in the first round, but he is also nearing a year without an actual fight. Prates has added a major knockout over former champion Jack Della Maddalena, while Garry already received his title shot against Makhachev. Morales has the résumé of a contender and the inactivity of someone who risks being passed by the queue.

Morales is asking for the belt — but he is really asking for movement

Morales did not frame his message around one opponent. He started with Makhachev, reminding the champion that he has been asking for the fight since Makhachev moved into the division. But Morales also acknowledged the champion's earlier position that he should win one more bout first. That is why the rest of the callout matters more than the title demand itself.

Morales offered Prates the obvious eliminator, then named Rakhmonov as the division's "final boss" if other plans get in the way. That is a useful way to read his position. He does not need the UFC to declare him next today; he needs a matchup that cannot be ignored if he wins it. At 27, undefeated and already proven against ranked opposition, another elite victory would make it much harder to keep him outside the championship rotation.

The problem is time. Morales has not competed in 2026 despite staying close enough to the title picture that he made championship weight as the backup for UFC 330. Being ready without fighting does not move a contender forward. His public challenge is therefore as much about securing a date as securing a name.

Carlos Prates is the matchup that can settle the contender argument

Carlos Prates is the reason Morales cannot assume his unbeaten record gives him priority. Prates knocked out former champion Jack Della Maddalena in May, his third straight stoppage, and immediately argued that he should be next for the welterweight belt. That win gave him something Morales currently lacks: a fresh signature result in 2026.

The matchup between them would also solve the UFC's contender problem cleanly. Morales brings size, speed and a 7-0 UFC record. Prates brings one of the division's most dangerous striking runs and recent finishes over former champions. Neither man would need a complicated promotional explanation. The winner could credibly stand across from Makhachev with a recent elite victory rather than relying on rankings or potential.

Morales has already said he wants that test. The competitive risk is obvious, but waiting carries its own risk. Every major welterweight booking that happens without him creates another path for somebody else to build momentum. A Prates fight would be dangerous precisely because it is valuable.

Garry’s response turns a ranking debate into a fight the UFC can actually book

Ian Machado Garry exchanges punches with Islam Makhachev at UFC 330

Ian Machado Garry adds a different layer because the rivalry is already personal. Garry responded to Morales by saying he had accepted a fight, that a date had been offered, and that the public version of the negotiations did not match what was happening privately. Morales had dismissed him in blunt terms; Garry answered by questioning how long Morales has been inactive.

Garry is coming off a competitive unanimous-decision loss to Makhachev at UFC 330. He did not win the belt, but he showed enough against the champion to remain near the front of the division. A fight with Morales would therefore give both men exactly what they need: Garry gets a fast route back toward another title opportunity, while Morales gets a recent title challenger whose ranking and profile immediately strengthen his case.

There is also history. Morales made 170 pounds as the backup for the Makhachev-Garry title fight, so he was literally one late withdrawal away from entering the same championship bout. Two months later, he and Garry are arguing over who is actually willing to sign. If the UFC wants a five-round welterweight main event with consequences, the matchmaking is already sitting there.

Morales' message works because it is not really a demand for special treatment. It is a demand for movement. Give him Prates, Garry, Rakhmonov or another elite welterweight and let the result settle the argument.

His unbeaten record keeps the ceiling high, but inactivity can turn a contender into a name the division talks around. The next booking matters more than the next callout. Morales has made it clear he is willing to risk his place against the hardest names at 170 pounds. Now the UFC has to decide which one gets the chance to prove him right or remove him from the title queue.
