Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have traps hiding behind favorable-looking fixtures
Arsenal’s first three league matches have produced the same thing every contender wants at this point: maximum points without needing to explain anything away. Add the Community Shield and their start is five wins in a row. Sunderland away is the kind of fixture where that run can become more impressive precisely because the favorite is expected to win.
The Stadium of Light will not be neutral territory for several Arsenal players. Granit Xhaka now anchors Sunderland’s midfield after his long history in north London. Dan Ballard came through Arsenal’s academy. Bruno Guimarães, once Newcastle captain, can expect an especially hostile reception on his return to the northeast in Arsenal colors. Sunderland also have a recent piece of evidence that matters: they held Arsenal to a 2-2 draw on Wearside last season.
For Mikel Arteta’s side, the danger is assuming superior quality will solve the match by itself. Sunderland are organized enough to punish a passive favorite, and Régis Le Bris has already shown he is willing to adapt without abandoning his team’s identity. Arsenal have been excellent partly because they can change solutions within a match. Sunderland’s best chance is to make that adaptability necessary from the start.
Chelsea face a different kind of test at home to Hull. On paper, a squad containing Rogers, João Pedro and Palmer should overwhelm a promoted side. In reality, Hull are third after taking seven points from their first three matches and Chelsea have not won any of their past four league games against promoted opposition. That is exactly the type of stat that turns a supposedly comfortable home fixture into a concentration test.
Chelsea’s front three have already combined for 10 goal contributions in three league games. Their speed and fluidity make them one of the most dangerous attacking units in the division, but the defense has offered enough openings that Hull should believe they can create chances. Oli McBurnie is set for his 100th Premier League appearance and is still waiting for his first goal of the season. He has contributed with work away from the ball even without scoring, and his physical style gives Hull a route to make Chelsea defend uncomfortable actions.
Liverpool should also be favored against Fulham, but the real story is on the visiting bench. Álvaro Arbeloa has lost all three of his Premier League matches as Fulham manager and conceded seven goals. The football has not been completely lifeless; Fulham have created. The problem is what happens when opponents play through them. An ambitious structure is useful only if it does not repeatedly leave the defense exposed.
Andoni Iraola knows something about surviving that kind of beginning. His own first Premier League job took time before results caught up with the process. Liverpool are now beginning to look sharper under him, which makes Anfield an unpleasant place for Arbeloa to search for reassurance. Aston Villa’s early problem has been similar on the scoreboard but different in feel. They have also failed to score in the league, yet Nicolas Jackson’s first goal for the club in the Champions League win at Club Brugge may be the moment that changes the attack. Jackson joined after a major summer reshuffle and replaced Ollie Watkins as the central reference point. He already knows Unai Emery from Villarreal, and that relationship can accelerate the adjustment period.
Villa host Nottingham Forest with the chance to translate European relief into domestic production. Jackson’s movement gives Villa a different threat than a static No. 9 would. He can run channels, stretch the last line and make defenders turn. The transfer fee brings expectation, but the more useful question is whether his goal in Belgium lets him play with less weight on every chance.
At Crystal Palace, the biggest story may simply be seeing Cheick Doucouré on a Premier League pitch again.
