Anthony Ippolito did not prepare to play a young Sylvester Stallone by trying to get as lean as possible. His job was almost the opposite: become substantially bigger, then refine that new size until his body matched the thicker, athletic look Stallone carried while making the original Rocky.
In a September 2026 interview with GQ, Ippolito said the physical preparation for I Play Rocky stretched somewhere between a year and a half and two years. He estimated that he gained about 40 pounds along the way and was unusually clear about an important detail: that was not 40 pounds of pure muscle. The transformation included a long mass-gaining phase, a five-day training schedule, more specialized coaching during the final months, and eventually boxing and cardio as filming approached.
That makes the transformation more interesting than a typical “actor gained X pounds” headline. It shows what happens when the target is not simply maximum muscularity or minimum body fat, but a specific screen silhouette. It also offers several useful lessons for ordinary lifters—provided the film-specific parts are separated from the training principles that actually generalize.
Why Matching Young Stallone Required Size Before Leanness

Ippolito’s first problem was not that he needed to uncover more definition. He needed more body mass. He told GQ that the goal was to reproduce the way Stallone looked around the first Rocky: muscular and athletic, but also comparatively thick through the torso and limbs rather than peeled down to a modern bodybuilding level of leanness.
That distinction matters because physique targets change training and nutrition decisions. If the visual brief is “look bigger in clothes and convincingly fill out a boxer’s frame,” aggressively dieting from the beginning works against the goal. A calorie deficit can help reveal muscle that is already there, but it is a poor environment for adding a large amount of new size. Ippolito therefore spent the early phase moving the scale upward instead of trying to keep every pound visually perfect.
There was also a character-specific reason not to chase a contemporary fitness-model look. The young Stallone image people remember from Rocky is not the ultra-dry, striated condition he displayed in some later films. It is a more rugged boxing physique: prominent shoulders and arms, a developed chest and back, and enough overall mass that the body reads as powerful even when it is not maximally defined.
For ordinary lifters, the broader lesson is to define the actual physique target before choosing the diet. Someone who needs to add substantial muscle should not let fear of a temporarily softer waist prevent any meaningful weight gain. At the same time, that does not mean gaining weight as fast as possible. The goal is enough energy to support hard training and growth while keeping unnecessary fat gain under control.
The Long Runway: Nearly Two Years and a Five-Day Bulking Phase

The least glamorous part of Ippolito’s transformation may be the most useful: it took a long time. He described the process as lasting roughly 18 to 24 months, with much of the earlier work done before the final specialist phase. During the main mass-building period, he said he was generally training five days per week and eating to hit the macros required to keep adding size.
That timeline is a useful antidote to the way movie transformations are often presented. The public sees a before-and-after image and a release date; the actual work can involve hundreds of ordinary sessions and months of eating in a way that supports the target. A five-day schedule is not magical, either. Its advantage is simply that it can distribute enough weekly resistance-training volume across the body without forcing every muscle group into one or two marathon sessions.
Modern resistance-training guidance points in the same general direction: consistency, sufficient weekly volume and progressive effort matter more than discovering one perfect split. For hypertrophy, higher weekly training volumes can be useful when they are recoverable, but the exact number of days should fit the athlete. A lifter can grow on three, four, five or more weekly sessions if total work, exercise selection, progression and recovery are sensible.
Ippolito’s role also created a powerful compliance advantage that ordinary lifters do not have: the physique was part of his job. That does not invalidate the work, but it changes the context. When meals, training and recovery support a professional deadline, adherence can be unusually high. For everyone else, a four-day plan performed reliably for a year will usually beat a six-day plan that survives three enthusiastic weeks.
Forty Pounds Gained Does Not Mean Forty Pounds of Muscle

The most responsible part of Ippolito’s account may be that he immediately qualified the number. He estimated that his body weight rose by about 40 pounds, but said plainly that it was not all muscle. That is exactly how a large bulk should be interpreted.
Scale weight during a long gaining phase can come from several places: new muscle tissue, body fat, additional glycogen stored with water, more food in the digestive system and ordinary fluctuations in hydration. Resistance training and adequate nutrition can shift part of that gain toward lean mass, but no realistic bulk converts every added pound into muscle.
Research on intentional weight gain in trained lifters also argues against treating a faster surplus as automatically better. When people gain body weight more aggressively, the extra speed can produce disproportionately more fat rather than an equal acceleration in muscle growth. That is why a modest surplus and a slower rate of gain are usually more practical for someone whose only objective is improving body composition.
Ippolito’s situation was different because the role itself required a visibly larger body and later provided a separate phase to tighten the look. Even so, his own description is a useful reminder not to copy headline numbers blindly. A recreational lifter who already has years of training behind him should not decide that gaining 40 pounds is the next logical step simply because an actor did it for a movie.
Protein is another piece of the equation, but not a reason to overcomplicate the diet. Sports-nutrition literature commonly supports roughly 1.4–2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day for exercising adults seeking to build or preserve muscle. That is a general evidence-based range, not a claim about Ippolito’s personal intake. Total calories, training quality and adherence still determine whether those building blocks are used in a productive program.
The Final Phase: Trainers, Two-a-Days, Boxing and Cardio

According to Ippolito, the final five months became much more specialized. Trainers Grant Roberts and Kirk Myers entered the process, and as shooting approached he moved into periods of two-a-day work while adding boxing and cardio. The objective was no longer simply to make the scale climb. He needed to keep the size he had built while becoming athletic enough to move, fight and look convincing as Stallone making Rocky.
This is a classic phase change. A mass-building block prioritizes progressive resistance training, sufficient food and recovery. A finishing block can retain the resistance work while increasing sport practice and energy expenditure. The challenge is that adding conditioning on top of lifting raises total fatigue. Two-a-days can make sense when sessions have different purposes and recovery is professionally managed, but they are not inherently superior to one well-designed daily session.
Boxing was especially relevant because it served two goals at once. It increased conditioning demand while rehearsing the movement vocabulary the role required: stance, rhythm, footwork, punching mechanics and the ability to stay coordinated while fatigued. Generic treadmill work could improve aerobic fitness, but it would not teach the body to look like a boxer on camera.
For a recreational lifter, the useful translation is much simpler. If you want to move from a gaining phase toward a leaner, more athletic phase, keep resistance training as the anchor and add conditioning progressively instead of suddenly doubling your weekly workload. Two or three modest cardio sessions are often easier to recover from than copying an actor’s filming schedule.
Why He Did Not Diet Away All the Extra Mass

Perhaps the most unusual choice was deciding when to stop leaning out. Ippolito said that the added boxing and cardio helped him remove some of the fat accumulated during the long gaining phase, but he did not want to strip all of it away. The target was still Stallone’s body, not the leanest possible version of Ippolito.
That matters because “leaner” and “more accurate” were not synonymous. If he had dieted until every abdominal line was as sharp as possible, his waist might have looked tighter but his overall silhouette could have drifted away from the fuller physique the production needed. Film transformations are costume-and-character problems as much as they are fitness problems.
The same principle appears in bodybuilding in a different form: body composition is only one part of appearance. Muscle size, proportions, posture, posing, lighting, glycogen, hydration and clothing all change what the viewer sees. An actor preparing for a role has an additional requirement—matching a recognizable person at a specific point in history.
That is also why comparisons between actor transformations can be misleading. A superhero role may reward broad shoulders, a tiny waist and visible abs. A boxer biopic may need thicker arms and torso mass with enough softness to look period-accurate. A military role may prioritize endurance and movement more than bodybuilding size. “Best shape” only makes sense relative to the job.
For ordinary lifters, there is a useful psychological lesson here: you do not always need to chase your lowest attainable body-fat percentage. If your preferred look is bigger, stronger and moderately lean, endlessly cutting can keep you farther from that target than a controlled gaining phase followed by a shorter tidy-up.
What the Build-Then-Tighten Approach Gets Right

Strip away the movie deadline and the transformation follows a familiar structure: spend a long period creating the conditions to build size, then use a shorter phase to reveal and condition that new physique. This is often more productive than trying to gain muscle and become dramatically leaner at the same time.
The mass-building portion works when resistance training provides a progressively challenging stimulus and the diet supplies enough energy and protein to recover. The finishing portion works when calories and conditioning are adjusted without abandoning the lifting that tells the body to retain muscle. Those are broad principles, not a prescription to copy Ippolito’s exact schedule.
The sequencing is especially relevant for intermediate lifters. Beginners can sometimes gain muscle while losing fat because almost any competent resistance program is a major new stimulus. As training age increases, trying to maximize two opposing outcomes at once becomes harder. Dedicated phases can make progress easier to measure: body weight and gym performance trend upward during a build, then waist and body fat trend downward while key lifts are defended during a cut.
The important word is “controlled.” A gaining phase does not require turning every meal into a challenge, and a leaning phase does not require replacing lifting with hours of cardio. Smaller adjustments are easier to sustain and give clearer feedback. If body weight is climbing much faster than performance or measurements justify, the surplus can be reduced. If a cut is destroying training performance, recovery and mood, the deficit may be too aggressive.
Ippolito’s transformation was amplified by professional coaching and a fixed production deadline, but the underlying logic is ordinary: build first, refine second, and keep the training stimulus present in both phases.
What Ordinary Lifters Should Copy—and What They Should Leave to Movie Sets

The most copyable part of the Rocky transformation is patience. Ippolito did not try to manufacture the physique in eight weeks. He spent roughly a year and a half to two years moving through different phases, and the final high-intensity push came only after a long foundation had already been built.
Second, copy the idea of eating for the current goal. During a mass phase, use a controlled calorie surplus, keep protein adequate and let hard resistance training justify the extra food. During a leaning phase, reduce calories gradually, keep protein and lifting in place, and add conditioning only at a dose you can recover from. Track body weight, waist, photos and performance instead of trusting one metric.
Third, use specificity when it matters. Ippolito added boxing because the role required boxing. If your goal is a faster 5K, your conditioning should include running. If you want better work capacity for functional fitness, practice the movements and energy systems that appear in that sport. Cardio is not merely a calorie-burning punishment at the end of a bulk; it is a trainable fitness quality.
What should stay on the movie set is the urgency. Two-a-days, unusually high food intake and an aggressive final conditioning block can be rational for an actor whose appearance is tied to a shooting schedule and who has professional support. They are unnecessary for most people with jobs, families and no camera date. The sustainable version is slower and less dramatic, which is exactly why it is more repeatable.
Ippolito also said that after production he lost weight because he did not want to keep eating enough to maintain the larger body. That is a useful final reminder: a physique is only practical if you can live with the habits required to maintain it. The best endpoint is not the heaviest or leanest body you can briefly force into existence. It is one that serves your goals without making the rest of your life revolve around preserving a movie transformation.
