Brandin Podziemski attacking for the Golden State Warriors

Brandin Podziemski Is Forcing the Warriors to Make Their Extension Decision Early

GOATIFY

Brandin Podziemski entered Golden State’s training camp with two questions hanging over him: how large his role would become, and how much the Warriors should pay to keep him beyond this season. Three days into camp, those questions are starting to merge. Steve Kerr has already confirmed Podziemski will start next to Stephen Curry in the preseason opener against the Clippers, and the 23-year-old has been one of the most aggressive scorers in the team’s Hawaii scrimmages.

That matters because Golden State is not evaluating him in a vacuum. Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody are unavailable to start the season, Kristaps Porziņģis is away from camp with a health issue, and the Warriors have an October 19 deadline to agree to a rookie-scale extension with Podziemski. The decision is no longer just about rewarding a useful young guard. It is about deciding whether the player Kerr calls “crucial” can become one of the bridges between the Curry era and whatever comes after it.

The starting job changes the extension conversation

Podziemski’s camp has been notable because Kerr has not treated his starting spot as a ceremonial reward. In Thursday’s scrimmage he attacked the rim, drew fouls, hit a step-back three and finished the starters’ run with a buzzer-beating three after a Curry miss. Kerr’s praise focused less on the shots than on the versatility underneath them: Podziemski can handle, pass, shoot, read angles and be placed in different spots after timeouts.

That is exactly the kind of player Golden State needs beside Curry. The Warriors do not need another guard who simply waits for kick-out threes. They need someone who can keep a possession alive when Curry is denied, push the ball after a rebound, make the extra pass and punish a tilted defense. Podziemski’s best stretches last season came when he stopped trying to force himself into a traditional point-guard or shooting-guard box and played as a connector who could also score.

The starting nod therefore raises the stakes of the contract talks. If Golden State sees Podziemski as a 30-minute starter who can function next to Curry and eventually carry more creation, his value is naturally higher than that of a sixth or seventh man. Training camp cannot prove he is worth a nine-figure commitment, but it can clarify how the coaching staff intends to use him. The early answer is not subtle: Kerr is giving him a central role.

Last season already gave Golden State more than a camp sample

Golden State Warriors veteran core in current team context

The strongest case for an extension is not three good practices. It is what Podziemski did when Golden State’s season became increasingly unstable. He played all 82 regular-season games, averaged 13.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists, and finished the year at 45.5 percent from the field and 37.1 percent from three. More importantly, his scoring climbed late in the season as Curry missed extended time.

That stretch matters because it answered one of the biggest questions about Podziemski’s ceiling: could his production scale when the offense asked him to do more? He averaged roughly 18 points per game over the closing portion of the schedule, scored a career-high 30 against Sacramento and then led the Warriors with 23 points in their season-ending play-in loss to Phoenix. Those games did not turn him into an All-Star, but they showed he could absorb more responsibility without the entire structure collapsing.

His durability also has real value on this roster. Curry played only 43 games last season. Butler and Moody begin this season recovering from major knee injuries, while Porziņģis’ availability is again uncertain. Golden State has spent too much of the last year constructing lineups around who is missing. A young guard who played every game and can fill several offensive roles is not glamorous insurance; he is part of the team’s competitive infrastructure.

The real argument is not whether Podziemski is good — it is what flexibility costs

The contract tension comes from timing. Podziemski’s 2027 cap hold is around $17 million, and a new extension with a much larger annual salary could reduce the Warriors’ future flexibility. Golden State is trying to compete around Curry now without closing every route to reshape the roster later. That makes the difference between a deal near $20 million per year and one closer to the $25 million range more meaningful than it would be for a younger rebuilding team.

But flexibility only helps if the team eventually spends it on players better than the ones it let go. Podziemski is 23, already trusted by Kerr, has improved as a scorer and fits next to the franchise player. Allowing him to reach restricted free agency may preserve optionality on paper, but it also creates the possibility that a rival team sets the market after another year of development. If he becomes a clear 17-to-20-point starter this season, today’s uncomfortable extension could look cheap by July.

The Warriors should therefore price the player they reasonably expect Podziemski to become, not merely the player he was last October. Curry’s own new extension left money on the table to create flexibility. The point of that flexibility is not to hoard cap mechanics; it is to keep enough good players around him to make the final years competitive. A fair Podziemski deal can be part of that plan rather than an obstacle to it.

Now Podziemski has to prove the role survives real games

There is still a reason for Golden State to resist overreacting. Training-camp scrimmages are controlled environments, and Podziemski’s next step has to hold up against opponents who scout him. Defenses will test whether he can consistently finish at the rim without relying on foul calls, whether his pull-up shooting is reliable enough to punish switches, and whether he can create clean offense when Curry is off the floor.

Sunday’s preseason opener against the Clippers is only the first checkpoint, but the lineup is instructive. Curry and Podziemski are expected to share the backcourt with rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, Draymond Green and Al Horford. With Porziņģis absent and Butler and Moody still rehabbing, Podziemski should get touches that resemble the workload Golden State may need from him in October. That is more useful evidence than asking him to dominate a second unit.

The defensive side matters too. Podziemski has built a reputation as an elite charge-taker and a smart positional defender, but bigger guards can target him and the Warriors cannot afford a small backcourt that leaks at the point of attack. If his added strength and improved decision-making translate on both ends, the extension debate gets simpler. Golden State will not be paying for a camp star. It will be paying for a durable, multi-skill starter entering his prime.

The Warriors do not need Podziemski to become Curry’s successor. That framing asks the wrong question. They need him to become a player who makes Curry’s remaining years easier while still being young enough to matter when the roster changes around him.

So far, camp has strengthened that case. Podziemski has earned the starting spot, attacked with confidence and received unusually strong public backing from Kerr. The October 19 deadline now forces Golden State to decide how much that combination of production, durability and future upside is worth. If the team believes the role it is giving him is real, the contract should reflect it. The bigger risk may be waiting a year and discovering that the price only went up.
