Cole Beaudoin Needed Two AHL Games to Force the Rangers' Hand

Cole Beaudoin needed only one weekend in the American Hockey League to force the New York Rangers into an interesting decision. The 20-year-old center opened his professional career with five points in two games for Hartford, then an injury to Joe Veleno created an immediate vacancy down the middle. New York did not reach for a veteran stopgap. It called Beaudoin up and put him into the lineup against the Islanders.

That is a faster path than almost anyone expected when the Rangers acquired Beaudoin from Utah in the Vincent Trocheck trade. The first-round pick was supposed to begin his first pro season learning in Hartford. Instead, his combination of production, size and two-way detail made him the obvious candidate when New York suddenly needed a center.

Two AHL games were enough to change the plan

The numbers from Beaudoin's first AHL weekend were eye-catching, but the way he produced mattered just as much. He recorded a goal and two assists in Hartford's 5-2 win over Lehigh Valley in his professional debut, then added two more assists the next night against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Five points in two road games is the kind of start that gets attention even when an organization intends to be patient.

The more encouraging part was how quickly his junior strengths translated against older professionals. Beaudoin is not built around one spectacular skill. He wins pucks, gets through contact, supports plays underneath the puck and makes simple decisions quickly. At 6-foot-2 and 212 pounds, he already has enough size to survive the physical jump from junior hockey, and his first AHL games suggested he can create offense without abandoning the details that coaches trust.

That profile is why the Rangers valued him so highly in the Trocheck deal. Utah selected him 24th overall in 2024, and he finished his OHL career in Barrie with 221 points in 236 regular-season games. His final junior season produced career highs across the board, while his playoff run reinforced that the offense was not just regular-season volume.

Hartford coach Jay Leach praised the relentlessness in Beaudoin's game after that opening weekend. The Rangers then had a practical reason to test it at the next level. Veleno's lower-body injury left the NHL roster short at center, Matthew Robertson cleared waivers and was assigned to Hartford, and a roster spot opened for Beaudoin. The timing was sudden, but the promotion was earned rather than ceremonial.

The recall turned a development year into an NHL test

Current Rangers players during the 2026 season

Beaudoin's first NHL appearance offered a useful reality check. He centered Jaroslav Chmelar and Oliver Bjorkstrand on the fourth line as the Rangers beat the Islanders 5-2 at Madison Square Garden. He did not need to dominate the scoresheet for the night to be meaningful. The assignment was to survive NHL pace, handle defensive responsibilities and give New York functional minutes while the club dealt with injuries.

That matters because the Rangers are learning how much organizational depth they actually have. Veleno is not the only player sidelined; the club has also dealt with injuries to Joonas Korpisalo and Adam Sykora. Early-season absences can expose a prospect system quickly, especially at center, where teams cannot simply hide an inexperienced player on the wing.

Beaudoin's arrival gives New York another option. He had already shown he could score in a Rangers sweater by beating Ilya Sorokin in the preseason on September 22, and his AHL burst showed that he could carry confidence into meaningful professional games. His regular-season debut then came in a winning environment, with the Rangers extending their strong start and controlling the Islanders 5-2.

The next question is not whether Beaudoin belongs in the organization's long-term plans. The Rangers clearly believe he does. The question is how quickly he can turn an injury-driven recall into a permanent NHL role. There is no reason to rush that answer. If Veleno returns and Beaudoin goes back to Hartford, he will receive major minutes and development time. If he keeps earning trust in New York, the Rangers have every incentive to keep the better player in the lineup.

Either outcome is positive compared with where this story began. Two AHL games were enough to show that Beaudoin was ahead of the expected curve. One NHL game was enough to show that the Rangers were comfortable putting him into a rivalry game immediately. For a prospect who was supposed to spend this season proving he was ready for professional hockey, the conversation has already changed to how long New York can keep him out of the NHL.

Beaudoin's promotion is not proof that he has permanently arrived, but it is a meaningful acceleration. The Rangers traded an established center in Trocheck partly because they believed in the value coming back. A few months later, the most important young piece of that return is already helping the NHL roster. His next few games will determine whether this is a brief injury replacement or the start of something much bigger.
