Tsarukyan was booked to challenge Islam Makhachev for the UFC lightweight championship in January 2025. He has nevertheless remained near the top of the rankings and has continued to build the case that his skill set belongs in championship fights. A loss would give the promotion several easier directions to take while he tries to rebuild again.
Tsarukyan’s own framing is harsher than that. He sees defeat as potentially final for his championship ambitions. That urgency should matter tactically. The temptation in a high-pressure fight is to chase a spectacular statement, but the safer route for Tsarukyan is to make the contest look exactly like the matchup that favors him.
Ruffy brings exactly the kind of danger Tsarukyan cannot ignore
Mauricio Ruffy is not the kind of opponent a contender chooses when he wants a quiet route back to a title fight. His biggest threat is obvious: he can end the night with one clean connection. The Brazilian has built his reputation around aggressive, explosive striking, and Tsarukyan has openly acknowledged the knockout power coming back at him.
That creates the central strategic question. Tsarukyan’s wrestling and grappling give him a natural way to reduce Ruffy’s most dangerous weapons, but getting there requires disciplined entries and patience. Ruffy does not need to win every minute if he can make one exchange count. Tsarukyan therefore has to resist turning the fight into a stand-up audition just because he wants a memorable performance.
For Ruffy, the opportunity is enormous in the opposite direction. Beating a contender with Tsarukyan’s ranking and reputation would instantly strengthen his own title case. It is also the kind of stylistic test that can change how the division views him. Tsarukyan knows that better than almost anyone after watching his previous title opportunity vanish and never automatically return.
That is why a convincing win matters almost as much as the win itself. Tsarukyan wants to leave no room for the UFC to move around him. Ruffy wants to create the opposite problem: a result so impressive that he becomes impossible to leave out of the next championship discussion.
The UFC 331 co-main event sits beneath a flyweight title rematch between champion Joshua Van and former champion Alexandre Pantoja, but the lightweight bout may carry the card’s most personal pressure. Tsarukyan is fighting to protect years of work and his place at the front of the queue. Ruffy is fighting to take that place from him.
For Tsarukyan, there is no need to manufacture extra drama. His position already supplies it. He had the title fight once, lost it before the cage door closed, and has spent the time since trying to prove that the opportunity should come back.
