Sesko Scored Again — Manchester United’s Champions League Return Changed the Derby Picture

Michael Carrick’s side returned to the Champions League after a two-year absence with goals from Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martínez. The scoreline eventually looked routine, but the useful part was not simply the margin. United found rhythm without emptying the tank, Sesko made another strong case for a starting role, Mason Mount returned to action, and several likely derby starters were able to come off early with Manchester City next.
Sabah arrived at Old Trafford as one of the competition’s great new stories and refused to play like tourists. They pressed forward, kept a genuine attacking shape and had a huge chance to equalize in the first half. United’s response was the more important detail: instead of allowing the match to become nervous, they accelerated and buried it before the interval.
United’s Champions League return finally looked controlled
There was obvious temptation for Carrick to rotate heavily. The Manchester derby is close, the season is still young and Sabah were making their first appearance at this level. Carrick resisted that temptation. Benjamin Sesko came in for his first start of the season, while Youri Tielemans, Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha gave the side enough familiar structure to prevent the night from turning into an experiment.
That decision mattered because Sabah were not passive. The Azerbaijani champions used a front-foot 4-3-3 and were willing to carry the ball into United territory. Their biggest opening came after Cunha had already put United ahead. Kaheem Parris found space to deliver toward the back post, where Joy-Lance Mickels escaped Noussair Mazraoui but sent his header wide. At 1-0, that was the moment that could have changed the tone of the evening.
Instead, United found the ruthless stretch they have often lacked. The opener had come from a quick switch to Patrick Dorgu on the left, followed by a low delivery that Cunha finished. Then the game broke open near half-time. Tielemans drove into the attacking third and helped create the chance that Fernandes converted for 2-0. Soon after, Fernandes released Mbeumo, the Sabah line was caught high and Sesko attacked the space in behind before rounding goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov.
Three goals before the break changed the job completely. United no longer had to chase the match, Carrick could manage minutes, and Sabah were left needing an improbable comeback in the most intimidating stadium they had visited in their rapid rise.
Sesko has turned the Manchester derby into a selection question
For Benjamin Sesko, the timing could hardly be better. The striker spent close to three months recovering from a shin problem and has had to rebuild his match rhythm carefully. Now he has scored in consecutive games: first against Everton and then on his first start of the new campaign against Sabah.
The goal was the kind of action that explains why United wanted his profile. Sesko stayed ready against an aggressive defensive line, used his speed to exploit the space and looked composed once he was through. There was no rushed finish and no hesitation. He took the goalkeeper out of the equation and completed the move.
That gives Carrick a real choice for Manchester City. United can use movement and combinations around the penalty area without Sesko, but a 6-foot-5 striker with pace changes what the opponent has to defend. He can threaten behind, compete centrally, occupy centre-backs and create room for Fernandes, Mbeumo and Cunha to arrive around him. Against a side that wants to control territory, having a forward who can make one direct pass dangerous is valuable.
The important part is that Sesko did not need 90 minutes to make the point. Carrick withdrew him after 64 minutes, along with Mainoo, preserving two players who may matter heavily in the derby. Sesko received a warm response from Old Trafford and left with another goal rather than another fitness test.
His return also makes United’s attacking hierarchy more interesting. Cunha scored from the left, Mbeumo contributed to the third goal, Fernandes remained the main creative reference and Mount returned from injury at half-time. Carrick now has options that overlap rather than merely covering absences. The derby lineup will show which combination he trusts when the difficulty rises sharply.
Fernandes and Mainoo gave Carrick the platform he wanted
United’s best spells still run through Bruno Fernandes. He scored the second goal, played a decisive role in the third and remained the player most likely to turn a harmless possession into an attack. His influence was not limited to the final action. He kept moving into spaces between Sabah’s midfield and defence, chased loose situations that looked dead and gave United the urgency needed to stop the match from drifting.
Mainoo and Tielemans helped make that freedom possible. The pair gave United control through the middle and allowed Fernandes to spend more time facing forward. It was also a useful rehearsal for Carrick before City. The bigger test will be whether the same passing patterns survive against a side capable of pressing with far more speed and punishing every loose touch.
The second half became about control rather than spectacle. Mount replaced Tielemans at the interval for his first minutes of the season. Mainoo and Sesko were protected after the hour. United kept Sabah at arm’s length and eventually added a fourth when a Fernandes free-kick created chaos in the penalty area and Martínez was left with the simplest finish.
The clean sheet may have been as satisfying as the goals. United had conceded twice in each of their opening Premier League games, and Sabah showed enough ambition to expose the defence if concentration dropped. Leny Yoro, Mazraoui, Dorgu and Martínez had awkward moments, but the collective response was better once United established control.
That is the real value of the night. A 4-0 home win over Sabah will not tell Carrick whether United are ready to beat Manchester City, nor should it. It did, however, give him a functioning attack, a returning striker in form, a captain influencing the game everywhere, useful midfield minutes, a returning Mount and a first Champions League clean sheet of the new campaign.
United’s last appearance in this competition ended in dysfunction and an early exit. This return began with something much less dramatic: professional control. For a team trying to become dependable again, that is not a small thing.
