Andrew Huberman's gym looks like someone gave a strength coach, a 1970s machine collector and a physiology nerd the same credit card. In a September 2026 profile, the neuroscientist showed a Venice Beach training space built around an unusual mix: a vintage Nautilus One pullover, Pit Shark belt squat, four-way neck machine, AirDyne bike, speed bag and thick-grip rotational dumbbells.

The equipment is fun to look at, but the useful question is what it says about training. Huberman is 6'1" and around 225 pounds, strength trains three times per week, does three cardio sessions, walks as much as possible and layers in mobility work. The setup is specialized, yet the logic is simple: choose tools that let you train a target quality hard, recover, and repeat.

The centerpiece is the vintage Nautilus One pullover, a machine designed around shoulder extension. Huberman also keeps a Pit Shark belt squat for hard lower-body work without needing a bar across the shoulders, an AirDyne for conditioning, a Hammer Strength four-way neck machine, a speed bag and Watson dumbbells with thick rotational handles.

There is a theme. Most of the unusual equipment solves a specific problem. The pullover reduces the role of the elbow flexors in lat training. The belt squat loads the legs while changing how much the spine and upper body contribute. The AirDyne can deliver easy aerobic work or savage intervals. Thick handles increase grip demand. None is mandatory, but each makes a particular stimulus easy to repeat.

That is a better way to judge gym equipment than asking whether it is "functional," hardcore or old school. A useful implement gives you a stable setup, a productive range of motion, measurable progression and a target you actually need. If a basic cable stack does that better than a rare vintage machine, the cable wins.

Why Huberman Loves the Nautilus Pullover for Back Training

Huberman's explanation for the pullover is straightforward: shoulder extension lets him load the lats without his arms becoming the limiting factor. In rows and pulldowns, the biceps and forearms contribute. On a well-designed pullover machine, the elbows are supported and the movement can be driven more directly through the shoulder joint.

That makes it useful before or after a compound pull. Pre-fatiguing the lats with pullovers can make subsequent pull-ups dramatically harder. Using the pullover later can instead add lat volume after grip and elbow flexors are already tired. Neither order is automatically superior; the goal determines the sequence.

For lifters without a rare Nautilus machine, cable pullovers and straight-arm pulldowns can fill much of the same role. A dumbbell pullover is another option, although its resistance curve and setup feel different. The principle matters more than the antique: include a movement where the lats can be challenged without every set turning into an arm workout.

Isolation work is not less functional when hypertrophy is the goal. If the purpose is to make a muscle do more of the work, reducing assistance from neighboring muscles is exactly the function you want.

The Pit Shark Shows Why Machines and Free Weights Don't Need a Culture War

Huberman's Pit Shark belt squat is another example of choosing an implement for the stimulus rather than the identity attached to it. A barbell squat is an excellent strength exercise, but it also demands shoulder position, trunk bracing and tolerance for axial loading. A belt squat lets the legs work hard while reducing some of those constraints.

That can be useful when the goal is quad and glute volume, when the upper body is fatigued, or when a lifter wants additional leg work without making every session a test of barbell skill. It does not make the belt squat better than a squat. It makes it different.

The same logic applies throughout a hypertrophy program. Free weights are fantastic when they provide a stable, progressive movement that fits your body. Machines are fantastic when they let you load a muscle through a useful range with less stabilization cost. A good program can use both. Loyalty to one category is mostly gym-culture theater.

A practical leg day might start with a squat or deadlift variation when strength is the priority, then move to belt squats, leg presses or hack squats for extra muscle-building volume. That keeps the skill-heavy lift high quality while still letting the quads and glutes accumulate hard work.

Thick-Grip Dumbbells: Useful Tool, Not Automatic Upgrade

The Watson dumbbells in Huberman's gym use thick, rotational handles. A larger handle increases demand on the hands and forearms, which can be valuable if grip is part of the target. Rotating handles can also change how a curl, press or row feels through the wrist and forearm.

But grip difficulty is not universally desirable. If you are doing heavy dumbbell rows to train the lats and your forearms fail first, a thicker handle may move the exercise away from your actual goal. That is why straps exist. If you are training grip, make grip the limiter. If you are training back, do not be afraid to reduce the grip bottleneck.

This is the recurring lesson from a specialized gym: features only matter relative to the adaptation you want. The fanciest handle, cam or machine geometry is useless if it makes the target exercise worse. Equipment should remove the wrong limitation, not create a new one.

Huberman's Weekly Training Is More Balanced Than His Gym Looks

Despite the laboratory vibe, Huberman's current weekly structure is not seven days of exotic lifting. He describes strength training three times per week and cardio three times per week, with walking as much as possible and short mobility or flexibility bouts layered around the week.

His split includes a long slow run, a leg day, a recovery day, a torso session for chest, back and neck, a roughly 30-minute tempo-cardio session, AirDyne intervals and an arms-and-shoulders day. That covers the buckets lifters often neglect when they get obsessed with one quality: muscle, strength, aerobic base, high-intensity conditioning and movement capacity.

Huberman's published fitness material also emphasizes periodization. One phase can use heavier sets of roughly four to eight reps with longer rest, while another shifts toward moderate loads, higher reps and shorter rest. That is not magic programming. It is a way to expose the body to different useful stresses without trying to maximize everything in the same session.

The schedule also illustrates fatigue management. Hard leg lifting, long endurance work and all-out intervals can all generate fatigue. Spreading them across the week makes it easier to arrive at the next important session ready to perform rather than constantly training half-recovered.

The Strength and Hypertrophy Principles Matter More Than the Equipment

Huberman's conversations with exercise physiologist Andy Galpin repeatedly come back to modifiable variables: exercise choice, load, repetitions, sets, rest, frequency and progression. Hypertrophy can happen across a broad repetition range when sets are sufficiently challenging. Strength is more specific to producing high force and practicing the relevant movement under heavier loading.

That means a $5,000 machine does not rescue a bad program. You still need enough hard weekly work, a progression strategy and recovery between sessions. If a movement is supposed to build muscle, know what muscle is being targeted and whether technique keeps tension there. If a movement is supposed to build strength, you need enough specificity and rest to produce high-quality force.

Progression does not always mean adding weight every workout. It can mean more repetitions at the same load, better range of motion, cleaner technique, another productive set, or the same work with less unnecessary fatigue. Over months, however, something measurable should improve.

Huberman's equipment collection makes sense because it sits on top of those basics. Reverse the order—buy specialized machines first and figure out what you are training later—and you have built an expensive museum.

A Huberman-Inspired Gym Template Without Buying a Muscle Lab

You can reproduce the training logic in a normal commercial gym. Three resistance sessions are enough for a strong foundation. Use one lower-body day, one torso day and one arms/shoulders or full-body day. Across the week, include a squat pattern, hinge, horizontal press, vertical or angled press, row, pulldown or pull-up, and a few isolation movements.

For the specialized-machine idea, pick one or two exercises that remove a bottleneck. Use a cable pullover when grip limits your lat work. Use a hack squat or leg press when you want more quad volume without another barbell squat. Use a chest-supported row when your lower back is tired. The substitute does not need to look futuristic; it only needs to solve the problem.

Add two or three cardio sessions with different jobs: one longer easy session, one moderate tempo session and one short interval session. Walking can fill the low-intensity background volume. Keep mobility short and targeted instead of turning it into a second workout.

For hypertrophy work, choose loads that let you control the target muscle and get reasonably close to failure without technique collapsing. For strength work, use longer rests and stop treating breathlessness as proof of effectiveness. The cardiovascular system can be trained separately; your heavy sets do not need to become circuits.

Most importantly, track performance. If repetitions and loads are improving with stable technique, the program is doing something. If you keep changing exercises because a new machine looks interesting, you never give adaptation enough time to show up.

What Lifters Should Copy From Huberman — and What They Can Ignore

Copy the consistency. Copy the mix of resistance training and cardio. Copy the idea that exercise selection should match a specific goal. Copy the willingness to use a machine when it does a job better for the session, and a free weight when that is the better tool. Copy the emphasis on recovery and on changing training emphasis over time.

You can ignore the rarity of the equipment. Your lats do not know whether the pullover machine is one of two surviving examples or a cable stack at a chain gym. Your quads do not care whether the belt squat costs thousands. Muscles respond to tension, effort, range of motion, progression and recovery—not collector value.

You can also ignore the temptation to copy someone else's exact weekly schedule. A three-lifting, three-cardio structure is sensible only if it fits your goals and recovery. A bodybuilder might prioritize four resistance days and two cardio sessions. A runner may reverse that balance. The framework should serve the athlete, not the influencer.

One final filter helps: separate high-value habits from high-friction rituals. Consistent resistance training, cardio, walking, sleep and progressive overload produce far more of the result than owning a rare machine or reproducing somebody else's exact recovery routine. Specialized tools should come after the fundamentals are boringly reliable.

When you do add a new exercise, keep it long enough to evaluate. Record the load, repetitions and how well the target muscle is working. Give it several weeks unless it causes pain or clearly does not fit. Novelty can make training exciting, but constant novelty makes progression impossible to measure.

Huberman's gym is interesting because it makes exercise selection visible. Every strange machine invites the question, "What problem is this solving?" Ask that question about your own program and you will probably make better choices with far less equipment—and far fewer protocols.

A Simple Equipment-Selection Checklist

Before adding any machine or exercise to your own program, run it through four questions. First, what adaptation is it supposed to create: strength, muscle, conditioning, mobility or skill? Second, what is currently limiting the movement? If your grip fails before your lats, the solution may be straps or a pullover, not more grip demand. If your lower back limits quad work, a supported leg machine may be more productive than another unsupported squat variation.

Third, can you progress it reliably? A movement that feels novel but cannot be loaded, repeated or measured is hard to evaluate. Finally, what does it cost in fatigue and setup time? The best accessory exercise is often the one that gives the target muscle a large stimulus without stealing recovery from the lifts that matter most. That is the real value of Huberman's machine-heavy setup: not that specialized equipment is inherently superior, but that every tool can be judged by the job it performs.
