Coco Gauff competing at the 2026 China Open in Beijing

Coco Gauff’s Beijing Exit Became a Bigger Late-Season Reset

Coco Gauff's China Open ended with more than a routine upset. Elise Mertens beat the American 6-3, 6-3 in 78 minutes, handing Gauff her first loss in six meetings with the Belgian and ending a Beijing run that had already become emotionally exhausting away from the court.

Hours later, Gauff withdrew from the Wuhan Open, where she was the defending champion, saying her body needed rest after a long season. That decision turns one flat afternoon in Beijing into a broader late-season reset: the world No. 4 is stepping away from a WTA 1000 title defense while sitting fifth in the race to the WTA Finals.

Elise Mertens finally solved a matchup that had always gone Gauff’s way

Mertens did not merely wait for Gauff to miss. She produced the most controlled performance of her Beijing week at exactly the right time. After needing nearly three hours to survive Katie Volynets and three sets to get past Jelena Ostapenko, the Belgian won 10 of her final 11 service points against Gauff and closed the match with an ace.

The contrast was sharp. Gauff finished with 34 unforced errors and eight double faults, including four double faults in the final game of the opening set. Her movement and energy dipped as the match went on, and Mertens kept making her hit another ball rather than offering an easy escape. Gauff later acknowledged that she had not moved or played well, while crediting Mertens for handling the important points.

The result also broke a stubborn head-to-head pattern. Gauff had won all five previous meetings, including a comeback in Dubai earlier this year after Mertens held three match points. This time Mertens did not let the advantage disappear. The victory was her 10th career win over a Top 5 opponent and her second of 2026, and it sent her into a first Beijing quarterfinal against Iga Swiatek.

The Wuhan withdrawal makes the bigger story recovery, not one bad match

The match cannot be separated from the previous 48 hours. In Gauff's 7-5, 6-1 win over 16-year-old Sun Xinran, play was stopped late in the first set after flickering advertising panels became a distraction. The point was replayed after review, Gauff held for 5-5 and then won nine of the final 10 games.

What followed online was far uglier than any disagreement over an officiating decision. Gauff said she received a huge volume of racist abuse and described the experience as draining. The WTA publicly condemned the abuse and said it was in contact with her to offer support. Gauff also made clear that criticism of the replay was one thing; racist attacks were not an acceptable extension of it.

That context matters because Gauff had been excellent in China before Wednesday. After beating Sun, she owned a 24-3 career record at WTA-level events in China, the best winning percentage this century among players with at least 10 matches there. She had won Beijing in 2024 and Wuhan in 2025 without dropping a set. The Mertens defeat therefore looked less like evidence that Gauff suddenly cannot play this swing and more like a player reaching the edge of her available energy.

Skipping Wuhan costs her the chance to defend a major title and points, but the calendar makes recovery a rational priority. Gauff is fifth in the WTA Finals race, and the bigger objective is arriving at the season-ending event physically and mentally capable of playing her best tennis. Elena Rybakina, Naomi Osaka and Amanda Anisimova are also among the prominent players missing Wuhan, underlining how demanding the final stretch has become.

Beijing ended badly for Gauff, but the most important decision may have come after the loss. Rather than forcing another WTA 1000 week while depleted, she chose recovery. Mertens earned the upset by staying composed and making Gauff pay for an error-heavy afternoon; Gauff now gets a chance to reset before the season's final major objective.

The immediate headline is a surprise China Open exit. The longer-term question is whether stepping away from Wuhan gives Gauff enough space to arrive at the WTA Finals looking more like the player who had dominated this part of the calendar than the exhausted version Mertens met in Beijing.
