The new wrinkle is not simply that Hellebuyck wants a move. That has already been part of the conversation. What matters now is that the list of acceptable destinations appears broader than a typical one-team demand, while Winnipeg is increasingly operating as though a resolution eventually has to come through a trade. That combination should create more paths to a deal — but it does not mean the Jets can simply revive an offer that existed months ago.
The relationship appears to have crossed a different line
The biggest change is the sense that circumstances after the Olympics pushed the Hellebuyck-Jets relationship into territory that may be impossible to unwind. Winnipeg can still bring him to camp if no acceptable deal materializes, but that would look more like a temporary holding pattern than a genuine reset.
Hellebuyck’s destination preferences also appear to give the Jets more room than some superstar trade requests normally provide. The focus is reportedly on teams with a credible chance to win rather than on lifestyle or tax advantages, although Canadian clubs are not believed to be part of the preferred group. For Winnipeg, that distinction matters. A broader contender list creates the possibility of multiple bidders instead of forcing the front office into one narrow negotiation.
It also reinforces why the Jets should be patient. Hellebuyck is not a player whose value disappears because the calendar reaches training camp. He remains a three-time Vezina Trophy winner with a résumé that can change a contender’s ceiling immediately. The receiving team would be taking on significant term and money, but it would also be acquiring a goaltender who has already shown he can carry enormous regular-season value and deliver at the international level.
The trade market has changed since the first serious talks
The complication is that the packages discussed earlier in the offseason cannot simply be pulled off the shelf. Buffalo no longer controls one of the draft assets that had been connected to previous conversations, while pieces tied to other possible frameworks have moved as teams completed their own summer business. The market is still there, but the ingredients are different.
That forces Winnipeg to solve two problems at once. The Jets need enough value to justify moving a franchise-level goalie, and they need a credible plan in net afterward. At different stages, the possibility of bringing back a familiar goaltending name has reportedly been part of the internal thinking. Whether that becomes part of an actual trade is less important than what it reveals: Winnipeg is not looking only for futures. The organization still wants to function as a competitive team after Hellebuyck leaves.
That is why a deal can feel both increasingly necessary and increasingly difficult. Every contender that enters the conversation has its own cap structure, goalie situation and asset limits. Winnipeg cannot demand a theoretical package; it needs a real combination another team can actually send. At the same time, the Jets have little incentive to discount Hellebuyck merely because both sides understand the relationship is nearing its end.
Training camp may therefore become a pressure point rather than a deadline. If Hellebuyck reports, the story will follow him into every practice and media session. If the Jets find a package that improves their present while protecting their future, the cleanest outcome is to move before that distraction grows. The latest information does not guarantee an imminent blockbuster. It does make the idea of Hellebuyck finishing this chapter in Winnipeg feel less likely than ever.
