CeeDee Lamb celebrates Dallas Cowboys touchdown against Houston Texans in October 2026

Cowboys Have the Stars, but the Winless Bucs Have a Trap — Thursday Night's Four Tests

GOATIFY

The Dallas Cowboys can climb above .500 on Thursday night, but their opponent is more complicated than an 0-4 record suggests. Tampa Bay arrives at AT&T Stadium without quarterback Baker Mayfield and safety Antoine Winfield Jr., forcing undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels into his second NFL start against a Dallas offense that just produced a dramatic comeback in Houston.

The contrast is stark: Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb are putting up huge numbers, while the Buccaneers have lost four consecutive games by seven points or fewer. A routine Cowboys win is possible, but only if Dallas avoids the mistakes that have allowed Tampa Bay to remain within one possession of opponents. Here are the four matchups that should decide the October 8 Thursday Night Football game.

Baker Mayfield Is Out — and Jalon Daniels Faces a Different Test

Tampa Bay's biggest adjustment is at quarterback. Mayfield dislocated his right thumb against Minnesota in Week 3, leaving Daniels to lead an offense that had already struggled to turn drives into touchdowns. Mayfield's veteran experience would have offered one way to manage a short week. Instead, Daniels must make his first NFL road start on national television, with only one full regular-season start behind him.

That first start, a 17-14 home loss to Green Bay, was neither a disaster nor the breakout that would immediately settle the position. The Buccaneers' official account credited Daniels with 148 passing yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, plus 55 rushing yards. His fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Kenny Gainwell gave Tampa Bay a chance, but protection broke down on the potential winning possession. Safety Evan Williams came free off the edge on a decisive fourth down, forcing a hurried incompletion. The lesson was less about Daniels' willingness to compete than about how little margin for error his protection provided.

Head coach Todd Bowles nevertheless committed to Daniels for the Dallas game. The rookie's ability to escape and gain yards with his legs changes the geometry of a defense: a pass rush that races beyond the quarterback can create a lane for a first down. Dallas must keep its rush disciplined, close the middle of the pocket and make Daniels repeatedly diagnose coverage from the pocket rather than gifting him scramble opportunities.

There is a real opening for the Cowboys. Tampa Bay has allowed 16 sacks in four games, according to the team's own Week 4 review. Dallas, meanwhile, has struggled to turn pressure into sacks. A matchup with a rookie behind a vulnerable line could help change that, but it is not automatic. If the Cowboys rely on uncontrolled pressure and leave easy throwing lanes, Daniels' mobility and quick outlets could turn what looks like an advantage into a source of frustration. The first few third downs will show whether Dallas has a plan or merely expects the rookie to make mistakes.

Bucky Irving and Tampa Bay's Receivers Can Still Stress Dallas

The absence of Mayfield does not erase the Buccaneers' offensive skill. Bucky Irving entered the week with 241 rushing yards on 56 carries, and the running game is one of the clearest ways Tampa Bay can reduce the burden on Daniels. A steady sequence of manageable second downs would make the rookie's job dramatically easier than asking him to rescue third-and-long plays behind an offensive line that has already surrendered too many sacks.

Irving is more than a handoff option. He can threaten cutback lanes, receive short passes and force linebackers to tackle in space. Tampa Bay should also be able to use quarterback movement selectively, rather than making every dropback a stationary pocket test. The important distinction is between a designed plan that keeps the chains moving and improvisation after the protection has failed. Dallas will want to prevent the first and exploit the second.

The passing options are not anonymous. Chris Godwin Jr. offers a dependable veteran target, while second-year receiver Emeka Egbuka has developed into another useful option. Tight end Cade Otton led the Buccaneers in receiving yardage entering the matchup, and Ted Hurst III has provided an occasional bigger gain. For a rookie quarterback, the ability to identify one reliable answer before the snap can be as valuable as a spectacular deep-ball play. Dallas must communicate on crossing routes and avoid giving away easy throws to the middle of the field.

There is also a game-management dimension. Tampa Bay has remained competitive in every defeat; the four losses have come by scores of 33-27, 23-19, 23-16 and 17-14. That does not mean the Buccaneers are secretly a winning team. It means opponents have rarely managed to put them away. A few Irving runs, a pair of tight-end completions and one defensive stop could keep Thursday's game close long enough for a young quarterback to grow comfortable. Dallas' priority should be forcing the Buccaneers into predictable passing situations without allowing a handful of explosive scrambles or missed tackles to reset the contest.

Tampa Bay's Defense Has Kept Games Close — but Winfield Is Missing

It would be a mistake to reduce Tampa Bay's record to an indictment of its defense. The Buccaneers have held three consecutive opponents below 300 total yards, and their Week 4 meeting with Green Bay remained within reach even after the offense turned the ball over. They recovered a fumble and intercepted Jordan Love late, creating opportunities for a comeback that ultimately stalled. That is the recurring theme of their season: the defense keeps the door open, but the offense has not consistently walked through it.

The most serious new problem is the absence of Antoine Winfield Jr. The two-time Pro Bowl safety suffered a rib fracture against Green Bay and is expected to miss two to four weeks. Winfield's importance goes beyond his 24 tackles in the first four games. A safety who can read routes, support the run and communicate assignments gives a defense flexibility to disguise coverages and help cornerbacks. Removing him ahead of a short-week game against a productive passing offense puts extra stress on every handoff and every coverage adjustment.

That matters because Dallas is not short of targets. CeeDee Lamb caught 17 passes for 189 yards in the 34-30 comeback win over Houston, and Prescott has several other receiving options, including Jake Ferguson and George Pickens. The Cowboys can attack with quick throws, motion and combinations that force defenders to pass receivers between zones. Tampa Bay cannot afford confusion or late reactions when Lamb changes direction or finds space after the catch.

Still, the Cowboys should not expect open field on every possession. Tampa Bay has forced opponents to earn yards and has shown enough resistance up front to disrupt timing. Dallas' answer should be patience: take available completions, use the run to keep the defense honest and avoid treating a depleted secondary as permission to force risky throws. Winfield's absence creates an advantage, not a guarantee. If Dallas becomes careless, the same Buccaneers defense that has kept four games close can make a favorite uncomfortable again.

Prescott, Lamb and Dallas Must Prove the Houston Comeback Was a Turning Point

The Cowboys are entering this game from a very different emotional place. A week ago, they were 1-2 and had to answer questions after a painful late defeat. On Sunday, they rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit against Houston, scoring 34 points and winning on Prescott's late touchdown pass to Lamb. Dallas now has a chance to turn one dramatic result into an actual run of form rather than another isolated high point.

Prescott has supplied the strongest evidence that the offense can carry the team. Through four games he has thrown for 1,065 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception, completing about 70 percent of his passes. Lamb's 498 receiving yards through four games make him a weekly problem even for healthy secondaries. The quarterback-receiver connection can generate chunk plays without the offense abandoning rhythm, and that should be especially useful against a Tampa Bay defense missing a key organizer in Winfield.

Dallas also showed against Houston that it has more than one way to score. Javonte Williams ran for three touchdowns in that victory. If he can keep the Buccaneers honest between the tackles, Prescott will have better opportunities off play-action and fewer obvious passing downs. The Cowboys should not need 45 dropbacks to win a game against a team whose offense is relying on a rookie quarterback. Balanced possession and clean execution would be a more convincing sign of progress than another frantic shootout.

But there is a warning inside Dallas' comeback. The Cowboys had to recover from a poor first half and still needed a last-minute drive to escape Houston. Their defense has not consistently closed games, and a short week can magnify communication problems and missed assignments. Tampa Bay may be 0-4, but every loss has been close enough to make one turnover or special-teams mistake consequential.

The clearest path for Dallas is not complicated: protect Prescott, establish Williams, force Daniels into long-yardage situations and finish drives with touchdowns. If the Cowboys do those things, their superior quarterback play should tell. If they let the Buccaneers hang around through missed tackles, penalties and empty red-zone trips, Thursday could become a far more tense test than the standings suggest.

Thursday night's question is not simply whether Dallas has more talent. It does. The real question is whether the Cowboys can turn that advantage into four quarters of controlled football against an opponent that has lost repeatedly without being overwhelmed. Daniels' mobility, Irving's rushing and Tampa Bay's resilient defense all offer ways to make the game awkward.

For Prescott and Lamb, the opportunity is to show that Sunday's comeback was the beginning of consistency. For Daniels, it is a chance to demonstrate that a difficult debut did not shake his composure. The result will hinge on pass protection, third-down discipline and which team can finally turn competitive possessions into a decisive margin.
