Lakers' Injury Clock Is Ticking: Kessler, Sexton and Redick Face an Opening-Night Test

GOATIFY

The Los Angeles Lakers have already seen what their new core can do in bursts. Luka Dončić has supplied the attacking spark, Austin Reaves has returned to the floor, and the club has collected useful preseason wins. Yet one of the biggest questions about this roster remains unanswered: when will the players brought in to reshape its defense and bench actually play together?

Coach JJ Redick's latest health update offers different timelines rather than a single reassuring answer. Walker Kessler is progressing from a jammed finger but has not been cleared for full live work. Collin Sexton is further behind with a lower-leg problem. Ziaire Williams has a foot contusion, while two-way forward Arthur Kaluma has finally resumed practicing. With only two exhibitions left before the October 21 opener against Golden State, the issue is no longer simply who is injured. It is how much shared court time the Lakers can realistically bank before the games count.

Kessler's finger is improving, but the Lakers still need their defensive anchor

Kessler is the absence that most directly affects Los Angeles' intended starting identity. The center jammed a finger against the backboard during training camp and has yet to appear in the Lakers' first three preseason games. At Saturday's practice he took part in some work but was not a full live participant. Redick left open the possibility of more scrimmage activity, while declining to promise a debut against the Warriors in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

That distinction matters. Being able to shoot, move and participate in non-contact drills is not the same as being ready to absorb screens, catch hard passes in traffic and protect the rim with an injured hand. Redick has described the problem as manageable, and Kessler himself has sounded optimistic, but neither statement is a confirmed game clearance. A cautious ramp-up is sensible given that the Lakers need him over an 82-game season rather than merely for a preseason box score.

Los Angeles paid for a specific basketball solution when it acquired Kessler from Utah in a sign-and-trade. His size, rebounding and shot-blocking are supposed to stabilize the paint behind an offense organized around Dončić and Reaves. The team sent substantial draft capital to secure a four-year deal, making his role central to the new roster rather than an optional luxury. Kessler's value is not measured only by blocked shots: opponents must account for his vertical reach on drives, while teammates can pressure the perimeter more aggressively when they trust the help behind them.

There is an offensive fit to learn, too. Dončić has long thrived with screen-setting big men who dive into space. The timing of a screen, the angle of a roll and the decision to slip into open space are developed through repetitions. Kevon Looney and Sandro Mamukelashvili have handled center minutes while Kessler has been out, giving Redick useful alternatives. But neither can substitute for the actual chemistry the intended starters still need to build. Even a short preseason appearance would provide information, not proof that the entire partnership is finished.

Sexton's lower-leg issue threatens the bench chemistry Los Angeles needs

Sexton's situation is more uncertain. Redick described the guard's problem as a lower-leg injury and said he was further behind Kessler in his recovery. Sexton has not played in any of the Lakers' first three exhibitions and was not yet fully participating in practice. The club has expressed confidence about his availability for opening night, but that is a projection rather than a firm clearance or a timetable for his first preseason minutes.

The Lakers did not add Sexton to become their primary star. They added him to make the minutes without Dončić less fragile. He is an aggressive scorer who can attack off the dribble, create transition opportunities and force opponents to guard more than one creator. Across Charlotte and Chicago last season, Sexton averaged 15.4 points and 3.3 assists while shooting better than 40 percent from three. His offense can be explosive, but a bench role also requires judgment: knowing when to push, when to feed a teammate and when to keep a possession alive rather than hunt a difficult shot.

He needs repetitions with the reserve wings and whichever center Redick uses in second-unit groups. There is no reason to interpret the lack of a preseason debut as proof of a serious setback. The team has not announced one. Equally, the distinction between being described as day-to-day and actually completing live practice should not be erased. The next meaningful update will be participation, followed by a decision about whether he can safely handle game-speed movement. Until then, Redick must prepare contingency ball-handling combinations rather than assume his preferred bench scorer will immediately be available.

Williams and Kaluma are fighting for time as the preseason clock runs down

Ziaire Williams in yellow Lakers jersey No. 11 in 2026

Williams' injury matters to the competition for wing minutes. He scored 13 points on four-of-six shooting in the preseason opener, making all three of his three-point attempts in 21 minutes. He then missed the next two exhibitions. Redick identified a foot contusion and said it was not a major concern, but he did not offer a precise return date.

Every healthy appearance gives Williams a chance to show that his shooting, length and defensive versatility fit beside Dončić and Reaves. Those roles are competitive. A wing who can defend across positions and hit open threes has a clear route to playing time; missing evaluation opportunities makes that case harder. The club should not rush a foot injury for the sake of an exhibition, but the lost audition time is real.

Kaluma is moving in the other direction. The two-way forward had been unavailable earlier in the preseason but returned to practice Saturday. His Summer League play created interest, although a practice return does not guarantee NBA minutes. The Lakers still face Golden State on Tuesday and Denver on Friday, but those games are checkpoints, not automatic clearance deadlines.

All four cases underline the same challenge: a rotation becomes reliable only when players learn each other's defensive calls, spacing preferences and habits at game speed. Injuries are interrupting that learning in different ways. Redick's staff must decide which combinations deserve the remaining practice and exhibition possessions without compromising anyone's recovery.

The encouraging part of Redick's report is that no new long-term absence was announced. Kessler may be closest to live action, Sexton still has ground to make up, Williams is managing a contusion and Kaluma is back in the gym. The less comfortable part is the calendar. Two preseason games cannot recreate an entire training camp, and the October 21 opener is approaching quickly.

Los Angeles does not need to force every newcomer into a meaningless exhibition to prove the offseason worked. It does need a practical plan for opening night and for the first weeks that follow. Kessler's rim protection and Sexton's bench creation are supposed to solve different problems. Until they are healthy enough to test those solutions together, the Lakers' most important preseason result may be a clean practice report rather than another win.
