Mauricio Ruffy training ahead of UFC 331

Mauricio Ruffy vs. Arman Tsarukyan: Why UFC 331 Could Create the Next Lightweight Challenger

GOATIFY

UFC 331 gives Mauricio Ruffy the kind of opportunity that can change a career in one night. The Brazilian lightweight arrives in Los Angeles as one of the division's most dangerous finishers, but Arman Tsarukyan represents a very different problem from the opponents Ruffy has recently overwhelmed. This is a five-round test against a contender whose wrestling, pace and experience can expose every unfinished part of a title hopeful's game.

Ruffy enters the co-main event 14-2 with 13 knockout wins after stoppages of Rafael Fiziev and Michael Chandler. Tsarukyan has spent years near the top of the lightweight rankings and believes beating Ruffy should finally deliver the title opportunity that has repeatedly slipped away.

Ruffy's spectacular offense meets its hardest test

Ruffy is long for the division, creative with his attacks and comfortable throwing techniques that many fighters reserve for low-risk moments. His knockout rate reflects that mindset: 13 of his 14 professional victories have come by knockout or technical knockout. The spinning attacks and sudden changes of rhythm are not decoration. They are part of a style designed to make opponents hesitate long enough for the decisive shot to arrive.

The Michael Chandler win at UFC Freedom 250 accelerated everything. Chandler has spent years fighting elite lightweights, and Ruffy did not merely survive that step up. He stopped him. That made it much harder to treat Ruffy as a developing prospect who needed several more fights before entering the title conversation.

Yet Tsarukyan attacks the exact area that once forced Ruffy to rethink his development. After a submission loss to Benoit Saint Denis, Ruffy sought extensive training outside his usual environment, including work in Australia with Alexander Volkanovski's team. Against Tsarukyan, those improvements will be tested under pressure rather than in theory.

Tsarukyan can force Ruffy to fight everywhere

Tsarukyan's reputation begins with wrestling, but reducing him to a takedown specialist misses why he is difficult to solve. He can strike hard enough to make opponents respect exchanges, then change levels when they plant their feet. He can chain attempts together, ride opponents against the fence and turn defensive reactions into another phase of offense.

Ruffy therefore has competing priorities. He needs to remain dangerous enough on the feet that Tsarukyan cannot enter safely, but he cannot overcommit so aggressively that every missed attack becomes a wrestling entry. The spectacular technique that creates Ruffy's highlights can also create transitional moments. Tsarukyan is precisely the opponent who looks for those moments.

The key may not be whether Ruffy can stop the first takedown. It is what happens after the second and third attempt, or after he gets back to his feet and immediately has to defend again. Defensive wrestling at this level is an endurance problem as much as a technical one.

Five rounds make the matchup more revealing

The co-main event is scheduled for five rounds, which changes the strategic problem. Ruffy's early danger is well established. He has nine first-round finishes and the speed to punish a slow start immediately. Tsarukyan knows that surviving the opening exchanges without giving Ruffy clean opportunities could shift the fight toward the areas where his experience and grappling pressure become more valuable.

For Ruffy, pacing does not mean becoming passive. His best route is still to make Tsarukyan pay for every entry and force him to think twice before closing distance. But a 25-minute fight demands selective aggression. Throwing every attack at maximum intensity becomes expensive if Tsarukyan repeatedly makes him wrestle afterward.

If Ruffy wins quickly, his finishing threat becomes impossible to ignore. If he wins deep into the fight while defending takedowns, escaping bad positions and maintaining his offense, he answers a broader set of questions. Either version would be meaningful for a contender trying to convince the promotion he is ready for a championship fight.

The winner enters the Justin Gaethje title picture

Justin Gaethje with the UFC lightweight championship

The reward is significant because the lightweight championship picture is unsettled. Justin Gaethje holds the title after beating Ilia Topuria, while Topuria remains an obvious factor in what comes next. Tsarukyan believes a win at UFC 331 should guarantee his shot. Ruffy has been equally clear that a decisive victory, especially another knockout, would be his argument for jumping to the front of the line.

There is no automatic bracket in the UFC, so neither man can treat the matchup as a formal eliminator. Timing, injuries, rematches and promotional priorities can rearrange a division quickly. But a five-round win over another ranked lightweight is difficult to dismiss. Tsarukyan would add another elite victory to an already strong case. Ruffy would gain the kind of opponent on his résumé that turns momentum into championship credibility.

The contrast is what makes the fight so useful. Tsarukyan is trying to prove that years of contender-level work should finally be rewarded. Ruffy is trying to compress that journey by producing undeniable finishes against increasingly difficult opponents. If Ruffy can impose his striking on one of the division's strongest wrestlers, his title case becomes much more complete. If Tsarukyan controls the fight, he reinforces the argument that the newer wave still has to get through him.

UFC 331 is more than a showcase for two highly ranked lightweights. It is a test of whether Ruffy's evolution has caught up with his spectacular offense, and whether Tsarukyan can convert another dangerous assignment into the championship opportunity he has been chasing.
