Kirk Cousins leading the Las Vegas Raiders during their 2026 unbeaten start

The Raiders Are 3-0. Now They Get the Test That Makes It Real

GOATIFY

Three weeks into the 2026 season, the AFC West has produced a matchup that looked improbable in August: Kansas City and Las Vegas are both 3-0, and Sunday's game at Allegiant Stadium will leave one of them alone atop the division.

Kansas City's start feels like restoration. Patrick Mahomes is back from the knee injury that ended his 2025 season, the offense is again creating explosive plays, and the Chiefs have outgained opponents by 415 net yards through three games. Las Vegas is the bigger surprise. The Raiders have already matched their entire 2025 win total under first-year coach Klint Kubiak, with Kirk Cousins stabilizing the offense and a rebuilt defense creating turnovers at a league-leading rate.

This is more than an early standings curiosity. The Raiders finally have a chance to test whether their fast start is sustainable against the team that has defined the division, while Kansas City gets its first direct look at a rival that suddenly appears equipped to make the AFC West uncomfortable.

The Raiders’ 3-0 start is built on a defense that keeps stealing possessions

Raiders defenders celebrate a takeaway against New Orleans in 2026

The easiest way to dismiss a surprise 3-0 team is to call the start unsustainable. Las Vegas does have an obvious volatility marker: turnovers. The Raiders have produced nine takeaways through three games, and four late New Orleans giveaways transformed an 11-point second-half deficit into a 35-27 win. Turnovers fluctuate, so the defense cannot assume that pace will continue.

What makes the start more convincing is how those turnovers are being created. Las Vegas is generating pressure without living on all-out blitzes. Maxx Crosby remains the centerpiece, but Malcolm Koonce and Kwity Paye have made the front harder to slide toward one player. Rookie Hezekiah Masses has already turned pressure into interceptions, while Nakobe Dean has added speed and forced-fumble production behind the line.

That structure matters against Mahomes. Blitzing him recklessly creates escape lanes and leaves receivers isolated against a quarterback who has spent his career punishing predictable pressure. If the Raiders can rush four, keep seven defenders connected in coverage and still make Mahomes move off his first read, they can play aggressively without gambling the entire defense on every snap.

The test is whether the takeaway production survives against an offense that is much less likely to hand over four possessions in a quarter. Kansas City does not need Las Vegas to stop creating turnovers entirely. It only needs to force the Raiders to win more snaps the ordinary way: tackling, covering and getting off the field on third down. If Las Vegas can do that too, the defense becomes more than an early-season hot streak.

Kirk Cousins does not need to out-Mahomes Mahomes

The quarterback comparison is where this matchup can become misleading. Las Vegas did not sign Kirk Cousins because it believed a 38-year-old veteran could become Patrick Mahomes. It signed him because the roster needed a quarterback capable of getting a talented offense into the right play, protecting the football and allowing the No. 1 overall pick, Fernando Mendoza, to develop without being rushed onto the field.

Through three games, that bargain is working. Cousins threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns without a turnover in New Orleans, repeatedly taking the throws Kubiak's design created. The offense did not require him to dominate off-script. It required him to recognize leverage, distribute accurately and punish the Saints when the Raiders' defense supplied short fields.

Brock Bowers changes the ceiling. After missing the first two games following a knee procedure, he returned with 10 catches for 116 yards and a touchdown. More important than the raw production was his deployment. Las Vegas moved him from in-line tight end to the slot and outside, forcing the defense to declare how it wanted to match him. That creates cleaner information for Cousins before the snap and space for Michael Mayer, Ashton Jeanty and the wide receivers after it.

Kansas City will try to muddy those reads. Steve Spagnuolo can change the coverage picture late, bracket Bowers and force Cousins to hold the ball long enough for pressure to arrive. The Raiders' answer should not be asking Cousins to become a superhero. It should be leaning harder into what has worked: motion, defined reads, multiple tight-end looks and enough Jeanty involvement to prevent the Chiefs from treating every important down as a pure passing situation.

Maxx Crosby versus Patrick Mahomes is still the matchup everything bends around

Maxx Crosby in Las Vegas Raiders uniform during the 2026 season

Mahomes and Crosby have played this rivalry enough times that neither needs an introduction. Crosby has consistently created pressure against Kansas City, while Mahomes has built an overwhelming winning record as a starter against Las Vegas. Their individual battle captures the larger problem: Crosby can win snaps, but the Raiders have rarely made those wins define the game.

This version is different because both stars arrive after unusual offseasons. Mahomes is back after the knee injury that ended his 2025 season. Crosby remained in Las Vegas after a proposed move to Baltimore collapsed amid concern over his surgically repaired knee. Both have responded by helping unbeaten teams start fast.

Kansas City's protection plan cannot simply assign one tackle to Crosby and hope. He moves across the front, and the Raiders' other rushers are productive enough to punish constant double teams. Rookie left tackle Kahlil Benson has been excellent early, but this is a different level of stress. The Chiefs will need chips, protection slides, quick-game throws and a run threat credible enough to slow the first step of the rush.

Mahomes' own play is the counterweight. Kansas City has used play action efficiently, and his ability to reset after moving off his spot makes a disrupted pocket only the beginning of the next phase. Las Vegas needs disciplined rush lanes as much as raw speed. Crosby winning outside is useful only if Mahomes cannot step through an open interior lane and turn pressure into a scramble drill.

The Raiders do not need a huge sack total. They need enough disruption to make Kansas City play behind the sticks and to create one or two turnover-worthy moments. Against Mahomes, the difference between pressure and actual negative plays is usually the difference between a competitive afternoon and another Chiefs win.

A Raiders win would change the AFC West conversation before it changes the standings

Raiders and Chiefs rivalry context at Allegiant Stadium

Week 4 is too early to declare a division race finished, but it is not too early for a result to change the assumptions underneath it. Kansas City went 6-11 in 2025 and missed the playoffs, then opened 2026 by beating Denver, Indianapolis and Miami. The Chiefs have the résumé, the quarterback and the coaching continuity to make a rebound believable without needing validation from one early-season game.

Las Vegas is different. The Raiders won only three games last season. They have already matched that total, beating Miami, the Chargers and New Orleans, but none of those wins carries the same credibility as beating a healthy Mahomes-led Kansas City team with first place at stake. That is why this game matters more to the Raiders' reputation than to the Chiefs'.

A win would also validate Kubiak's broader choices. He has trusted Cousins instead of accelerating Mendoza's timeline, built an offense around adaptable personnel rather than one featured star and allowed the defense to attack with a deeper front. The result is a team that can win in more than one script: with offense, with pressure, or by capitalizing on mistakes.

A loss would not expose the first three wins as fake. Kansas City is good enough to beat legitimate contenders. The more revealing question would be how Las Vegas loses. If the Raiders protect Cousins, move the ball with Bowers, pressure Mahomes and stay within one possession, the underlying case for improvement remains strong. If the Chiefs control the line of scrimmage and force Las Vegas out of its structure, the gap between a promising rebuild and an actual division challenger will still be obvious.

That is the value of Sunday's matchup. The Raiders have spent three weeks building evidence that they are different. Kansas City is the opponent capable of testing every part of that evidence at once.

There is another reason the game carries unusual weight: the styles are beginning to converge around efficiency rather than reputation. Kansas City has made life easier on Mahomes with a stronger play-action game and a productive rushing threat, while Las Vegas has stopped asking its quarterback to manufacture every answer. Both offenses want to stay out of obvious passing downs because both opposing fronts are built to punish them. That puts first-down execution at the center of the matchup. A four-yard run, a quick completion or a successful screen may look ordinary, but those plays prevent Crosby and Kansas City's pressure packages from dictating the next snap.

Special situations should matter too. The Raiders have benefited from short fields created by takeaways; Kansas City has been excellent at turning small advantages into long scoring drives. If Las Vegas gives Mahomes extra possessions, the defense's strong first month can unravel quickly. If Kansas City lets Cousins repeatedly start near midfield, it reduces the number of difficult throws the veteran must make. The team that controls field position and third down will probably determine whether this becomes a Mahomes showcase or the first signature win of the Kubiak era.

One Week 4 result will not decide the AFC West, but it can change the way the division is viewed. A Kansas City win would reinforce the idea that the Chiefs' 2025 collapse was an interruption rather than a trend. A Las Vegas win would make 4-0 impossible to dismiss and would give Kubiak's team a head-to-head advantage over the standard it is trying to chase.

The matchup comes down to whether the Raiders can make their new formula work against Mahomes: create pressure without sacrificing coverage, steal possessions, and let Cousins distribute the ball to Bowers and Jeanty without forcing hero throws. Kansas City has spent years solving exactly those kinds of tests. Las Vegas finally looks capable of asking a harder question.
