Bobby Witt Jr. Owns MLB’s Deepest Position — Here’s How Every Shortstop Unit Stacks Up

GOATIFY

Shortstop has become the position where baseball’s modern priorities collide. Clubs want range, arm strength, speed, power, plate discipline and enough durability to handle one of the most demanding spots on the field. In 2026, the gap between teams with a true two-way star and teams still searching for stability has become especially clear.

At the top, Bobby Witt Jr. continues to make the position look almost unfair. Elly De La Cruz has taken another step toward becoming the complete superstar Cincinnati has been waiting for, while Otto Lopez and CJ Abrams have turned huge seasons into legitimate top-five cases. Behind them, established names such as Mookie Betts, Corey Seager, Francisco Lindor and Trea Turner have produced seasons that range from solid to surprisingly uneven.

That mix makes this year’s shortstop landscape more interesting than a simple list of the biggest names. Some clubs have elite everyday anchors. Others are getting excellent value from less obvious players. Several contenders are living with defensive tradeoffs, injuries or expensive veterans whose production no longer matches their reputations.

Here is how the 30 MLB shortstop situations stack up as the 2026 season reaches its decisive stretch, with the biggest emphasis on what each player or unit has actually delivered this year and what it means going forward.

The bottom ten show how quickly shortstop instability can spread

Kaelen Culpepper playing shortstop for the Minnesota Twins in 2026
Minnesota has found real upside in rookie Kaelen Culpepper while several clubs near the bottom remain unsettled.

Colorado sits at the bottom largely because Ezequiel Tovar has not supplied enough offense to offset merely average defensive value. He has started 119 games at shortstop but carries a 54 OPS+, with minus-two Defensive Runs Saved and zero Outs Above Average. The Rockies still have years committed to him under a seven-year, $63.5 million deal, so this is not a problem that disappears through a simple offseason reset.

Boston has had a similarly difficult year with Trevor Story. His 71 OPS+ and 31.7 percent strikeout rate are poor returns from a veteran expected to stabilize the middle of the infield, and he has appeared in only 48 games. Tampa Bay has received more availability from Taylor Walls, but a .218/.304/.292 line leaves the Rays searching for impact. Top prospect Carson Williams has not yet solved the problem either, opening his major-league sample 4-for-37 with 13 strikeouts.

Atlanta’s issue is different: the Braves have never really settled the position. Their rotating group has combined for a .222/.275/.329 line, leaving one of baseball’s better clubs without a reliable everyday answer. Seattle is also approaching a transition point. J.P. Crawford is in the final season of his five-year, $51 million deal, while Colt Emerson’s first extended opportunity produced a .190/.246/.335 line before wrist surgery. That makes 2027 feel wide open.

Milwaukee has at least identified the player it wants to grow with. Cooper Pratt arrived with enough internal confidence that the Brewers gave him an eight-year, $50.75 million extension before his debut, but the overall shortstop unit has hit only .228/.313/.309. The Yankees are also balancing present and future. Anthony Volpe has produced an 82 OPS+ in 194 plate appearances, while George Lombard Jr. has logged 99 plate appearances and increasingly looks like part of the long-term picture.

The Athletics are one of the more encouraging teams in this range because Jacob Wilson’s injury opened a door for Alika Williams, who has responded with a .273/.310/.438 line and 1.5 WAR in only 190 plate appearances. Pittsburgh is even more intriguing. Konnor Griffin is still only 20, yet he has already produced a 91 OPS+ and 1.3 WAR through 62 games. The Pirates are not getting superstar production yet, but the developmental arrow is pointing strongly upward.

Minnesota closes out this lower tier with one of the best reasons for optimism. Kaelen Culpepper debuted on August 7 and has hit .297/.350/.451 over his first 25 games. That sample is small, but it is enough to change the conversation. For a team that needed a long-term answer, Culpepper has quickly made shortstop look more like a strength in development than a hole.

The middle is packed with famous names having imperfect seasons

Gunnar Henderson playing for the Baltimore Orioles in 2026
Gunnar Henderson remains a major talent, but 2026 has not matched his best offensive seasons.

The middle ten are where reputation and current production begin to separate. Philadelphia’s Trea Turner has played 138 games and started 135 of them at shortstop, but a .239 average and 78 OPS+ represent a major step backward. The Phillies still benefit from his speed and experience, yet this season has been a reminder that even premium veterans can become less dominant quickly.

San Francisco has received power from Willy Adames, who has 21 home runs, but a .289 on-base percentage and poor defensive marks have dragged down the total value. His 100 OPS+ is essentially league average, while minus-five DRS and minus-17 OAA show how much the glove has hurt. Xander Bogaerts has endured a similar offensive problem in San Diego. His 80 OPS+ and .218/.318/.320 line are well below what the Padres expected, although he has still handled 132 of the club’s 143 starts at shortstop.

Francisco Lindor’s ranking is mostly about missed time rather than a collapse in ability. A calf issue cost him roughly two months, leaving him with an 103 OPS+ and 1.2 WAR in 86 games. The Mets have been able to use Bo Bichette at shortstop for 44 starts, which softens the blow, but Lindor at full strength remains the player who gives the defense and lineup their preferred shape.

Toronto’s Andrés Giménez is a more defense-first case. His offensive line has been modest, but one DRS and 18 OAA illustrate why the Blue Jays can live with less production at the plate. St. Louis has a similar profile in Masyn Winn, who owns eight DRS and 15 OAA. His 86 OPS+ would be easier to tolerate over a full season, but a fractured thumb interrupted what had been a very strong defensive year.

Colson Montgomery has supplied the White Sox with the opposite formula: huge power, huge swing-and-miss. His 31 home runs stand out, but so do 197 strikeouts and a .212/.292/.437 line. That still works out to a 102 OPS+, which is useful at shortstop, and the power ceiling gives Chicago something tangible to build around.

Cleveland’s Brayan Rocchio has quietly assembled a balanced season. He is hitting .246/.306/.378 with 20 doubles, 13 home runs, 60 RBI and 18 steals, good for 2.3 WAR. There is no single superstar skill, but he has given the Guardians steady value across enough categories to make the position dependable.

Gunnar Henderson is the biggest name in this tier. The Orioles star still has 22 home runs and 2.4 WAR, yet his .220/.304/.399 line and 99 OPS+ are clearly below the standard he established earlier in his career. His batted-ball numbers have also taken a step backward. That does not erase his long-term ceiling, but it does explain why Baltimore’s shortstop situation ranks closer to the middle than to the top in 2026.

Detroit rounds out the group with a split arrangement. Kevin McGonigle has spent significant time at shortstop and third base, giving the Tigers a young bat with real upside, while Javier Báez has continued to weigh down the aggregate production with a 74 OPS+ and negative WAR. The Tigers have talent at the position, but the value is not yet concentrated in one clear everyday star.

The top ten reward complete two-way impact

CJ Abrams playing shortstop for the Washington Nationals in 2026
CJ Abrams has turned a 30-homer season into one of the biggest offensive breakthroughs at the position.

Mookie Betts opens the top ten because the Dodgers still receive a strong all-around contribution even in a season that has not been spectacular by his standards. Betts is hitting .246/.308/.423 with a 100 OPS+, but 2.6 WAR, seven DRS and 10 OAA show how much value he continues to create beyond the slash line. For a club with championship expectations, that defensive dependability matters.

Jeremy Peña has been better offensively for Houston. His 119 OPS+, 17 home runs and 3.1 WAR through 94 games make him one of the more complete shortstops in the league when healthy. His contract situation also matters because he can reach free agency after 2027. If this level of production continues, Houston will face a major decision about whether to lock him in before the price rises further.

Zach Neto has again turned power and speed into a valuable combination for the Angels. He is one stolen base away from a third straight 20-homer, 20-steal season, and his age plus team situation make him one of the most logical trade targets to watch if Los Angeles decides to reshape the roster. The fact that a productive shortstop with years of control could become available only increases his league-wide value.

Arizona’s Geraldo Perdomo is less explosive but more complete than many casual fans realize. He has seven DRS, 13 OAA and a 102 OPS+, while starting 139 of Arizona’s first 142 games at shortstop. That durability, defense and average-or-better offense create a high floor every day.

Dansby Swanson has also continued to justify his place among the better all-around shortstops. Through the first four seasons of his seven-year, $177 million Cubs deal, he has accumulated 16.6 WAR. His 2026 offense is only slightly below average at a 92 OPS+, but 18 home runs, 66 RBI, five DRS and 16 OAA keep him valuable. Chicago can live with modest batting numbers because the defensive impact remains elite.

Texas ranks even higher because Corey Seager’s missed time has been cushioned by a breakout from Ezequiel Durán. Seager has a 114 OPS+ and 2.4 WAR in 84 games, while Durán has started 47 games at shortstop and produced a .277/.337/.457 line with a 129 OPS+, 26 doubles, 17 home runs, 78 RBI and 4.8 WAR overall. Few teams could lose time from a star like Seager and still get that kind of replacement production.

CJ Abrams has made one of the biggest offensive jumps at the position. He is hitting .264/.342/.500 with a 129 OPS+, 30 home runs, 95 RBI and 28 steals, producing 4.6 WAR. The defense remains the obvious concern at minus-two DRS and minus-17 OAA, but Washington can accept some of that when the bat creates this much pressure.

Miami’s Otto Lopez has been an even bigger surprise. A .302/.339/.439 line, 31 doubles, 10 home runs, 63 RBI and 30 steals would already make for a terrific season. Add 5.5 WAR, nine DRS and 12 OAA, and the result is one of the most valuable two-way shortstop seasons in baseball. Lopez has gone from useful player to genuine cornerstone-level performer.

Elly De La Cruz is second because his game is becoming more complete without losing the explosiveness that made him famous. His 133 OPS+, 23 home runs and 24 steals provide the headline production, but the subtler gains matter just as much. His on-base percentage has risen from .336 to .360, and his OAA has improved from minus-three to plus-seven. Cincinnati is no longer just betting on tools. De La Cruz is turning those tools into polished star value.

And then there is Bobby Witt Jr. The Royals shortstop leads American League position players with 6.4 WAR, owns a 132 OPS+ and has already produced 30 doubles, 17 home runs and 38 stolen bases in 125 games. He also grades as the best overall defensive shortstop in the league and is positioned to chase a third straight Gold Glove.

That combination is what separates Witt from everyone else. De La Cruz may be the most electric athlete. Abrams has delivered more home-run power. Lopez has produced an extraordinary breakout. But Witt gives Kansas City elite baserunning, impact offense, premium defense and everyday reliability at the same time. There is almost no weakness for an opponent to target.

What the 2026 rankings say about building around shortstop

Mookie Betts playing shortstop for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2026
Mookie Betts shows why contenders value shortstops who can contribute in multiple ways even when the bat is not at peak form.

The most important lesson from the full list is that there is more than one way to solve shortstop, but there is almost no way to hide a bad solution. Teams with elite players gain value every day because those players are involved in so many defensive plays and receive so many plate appearances. Teams with weak offense and weak defense at the position feel the cost constantly.

Kansas City and Cincinnati have the dream outcome: young franchise players who can alter a game with several different skills. Miami has found enormous value from a less obvious source in Lopez. Texas has enough depth that a Seager absence does not collapse the position. Arizona and Chicago show the value of defense and reliability. Even Los Angeles can absorb a merely average offensive season from Betts because his glove and overall baseball intelligence remain so useful.

The teams near the bottom face harder questions. Colorado is committed financially to Tovar. Seattle may be entering a handoff between Crawford and a younger option. Boston needs Story to either rebound or make room for a new direction. Atlanta cannot afford to keep treating shortstop as a patchwork position if it wants to maximize a roster built to contend.

That is why the 2026 hierarchy feels meaningful beyond one season’s stat lines. Shortstop is not simply another lineup spot anymore. The best players at the position are offensive engines, defensive anchors and transition weapons on the bases. When a club finds one, it can shape the rest of the roster around him. When it does not, the search has a way of dominating every offseason.

For now, Witt owns the standard. De La Cruz is closing fast, Lopez and Abrams have forced their way into the elite conversation, and the depth behind them proves how demanding the position has become. Baseball has never had more different kinds of shortstops capable of changing games. The teams at the top of this list are the ones getting that impact most consistently.
