Paddy Pimblett Wants Ilia Topuria on TUF — But the Fight May Not Need It

GOATIFY

Paddy Pimblett has spent years saying he wants Ilia Topuria. His newest pitch is bigger than simply booking the fight: put them together for six weeks as rival coaches on The Ultimate Fighter, then let the feud finish in the Octagon.

The idea arrives at a moment when both the rivalry and the old reality series need a reason to matter. Pimblett is coming off a 52-second submission of Benoit Saint Denis at UFC 329, Topuria is rebuilding after losing the lightweight title to Justin Gaethje, and TUF has completed 34 seasons while competing for attention with a far denser UFC schedule and Dana White’s Contender Series. Pimblett believes the personalities can do what matchmaking alone cannot — turn a familiar grudge into weekly appointment viewing.

Pimblett and Topuria finally have the timing their rivalry was missing

Pimblett’s case starts with chemistry. He and Topuria have never needed a manufactured storyline. Their hostility stretches back years, through public insults, confrontations and the strange timing of two careers that kept moving toward the same division without quite producing the fight. Topuria was building a championship run at featherweight while Pimblett climbed the lightweight ladder, so the UFC had heat without a clean competitive window.

That window is finally open. Topuria moved to 155 pounds, knocked out Charles Oliveira to win the vacant lightweight championship and then lost the belt to Gaethje at the White House event in June. Pimblett, meanwhile, lost his interim-title opportunity against Gaethje in January before snapping back with the fastest kind of statement at UFC 329: he submitted Saint Denis in 52 seconds and restored himself as a credible top-10 lightweight.

That is why the coaching concept makes more sense now than it would have two years ago. TUF works best when the coaches are not simply recognizable names but active fighters with a real reason to dislike each other and a plausible fight waiting at the end. Pimblett explicitly compared the potential dynamic to Season 10, when Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Rashad Evans carried a season built around personal friction. The comparison is ambitious, but the underlying point is sound: viewers already understand the conflict before episode one.

The risk is overexposure. A rivalry this simple does not need months of artificial escalation. Six weeks of cameras, team competition and face-to-face interaction could deepen it, but it could also delay a fight that already feels ready. The UFC would have to decide whether TUF is serving Pimblett-Topuria or whether Pimblett-Topuria is being used to serve TUF.

The lightweight stakes are why this is more than a television gimmick

The competitive picture is what gives the television pitch weight. Pimblett is not proposing a celebrity detour. Both men are still relevant in one of the UFC’s deepest divisions, and the result would have consequences beyond settling a grudge.

Topuria’s first professional loss changed his position. Before Gaethje, he had gone 17-0, won UFC titles at featherweight and lightweight and finished elite names including Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway and Oliveira. After the June defeat, the question is no longer whether he can become a two-division champion; it is how quickly he can re-establish himself at 155. A fight with Pimblett offers enormous visibility without requiring an immediate title rematch.

Pimblett’s path is different. The Gaethje loss showed he was not ready to take the interim belt that night, but the Saint Denis submission prevented the defeat from becoming a slide. He has since said he is open to other leading lightweights, including Arman Tsarukyan, Oliveira and Mauricio Ruffy. That matters because it keeps the Topuria idea from feeling like his only route forward. It is the most personal option, not the only competitive one.

The wider division also argues against waiting forever. Gaethje has indicated he needs time before deciding on another defense, while Tsarukyan remains positioned near the front of the title queue. Every month creates another result that can change the hierarchy. If the UFC wants Pimblett and Topuria while both are free of other bookings, the promotional window is unusually clean right now.

That makes Pimblett’s TUF pitch interesting for a reason beyond nostalgia. The show once worked as a bridge between personalities and fights. Here, the fight already sells itself. The real question is whether six weeks of forced proximity can add something fans cannot get from press conferences, podcasts and social media — or whether the smartest move is simply to close the cage door.

Pimblett is probably right about one thing: if the UFC wants a TUF season built around active fighters with genuine friction, he and Topuria are an obvious pairing. Their history is real, their lightweight stakes are current and neither man needs an invented reason to care.

Whether that means TUF is the best route is less certain. The rivalry has finally reached the point where the fight itself makes competitive sense. If the UFC chooses television first, the series has to accelerate that payoff rather than postpone it.
