Regan Grimes Wins Again: What His 2026 Surge Means Before Mr. Olympia

UPLIFT IRON CLUB

Regan Grimes has gone from chasing a 2026 Mr. Olympia ticket to stacking wins in a matter of weeks. On September 6 in Milan, the Canadian Men’s Open bodybuilder won the Pro Muscle Italy Pro with straight first-place scores in both judging and finals, finishing ahead of James Hollingshead, Andrea Presti, Joan Pradells Martinez and Damian Kuffel.

The Italy result matters for more than another trophy. Grimes had already secured his 2026 Olympia qualification by winning the Austrian Oak on August 22, after finishing second in both Atlanta and Texas earlier in the month. Four shows in four weeks produced two runner-up finishes followed by two victories. That is a very different competitive story from his 14th-place finish at the 2025 Olympia.

It does not automatically make Grimes a favorite to win in Las Vegas. The Olympia field is deeper, the judging comparison is harsher and peaking again after a long run of contests is its own problem. But the 2026 sequence gives us something concrete to evaluate: he is no longer arriving on reputation or potential alone. He is arriving with repeated stage evidence that his package is moving in the right direction.

Italy Confirmed the Momentum Was Real

At the Pro Muscle Italy Pro, Grimes did not squeak out a split decision. The official scorecard gave him three points in judging and three in the finals for a total of six, the clean first-place score. Hollingshead was second with 12 total points, Presti third with 18, Pradells fourth with 24 and Kuffel fifth with 30.

That clean sheet is useful because bodybuilding discussions can get lost in isolated photos and fan arguments. A full contest scorecard tells us that the judging panel consistently preferred the same athlete across the relevant rounds. It does not mean every pose was uncontested, but it does mean the overall package won decisively.

For Grimes, the timing is especially important. The Italy show came only two weeks after his Austrian Oak victory. Holding enough fullness, condition and presentation quality to win again after already reaching a qualification peak suggests the first win was not a one-night spike. He was able to reproduce a winning look under another panel, against another lineup, in another country.

His August Run Changed the Entire 2026 Narrative

Regan Grimes celebrating a professional bodybuilding victory

Before the wins, Grimes had spent August getting painfully close. He placed second at the Lenda Murray Atlanta Pro on August 9 and second again at the Texas Pro on August 15. In Men’s Open bodybuilding, where the winner of an open contest during the 2026 qualification period earned an Olympia spot, runner-up finishes did not solve the main problem. He still needed the win.

The Austrian Oak on August 22 became the pressure point. It was inside the qualification window, which ended August 30, and Grimes finally converted. He beat Kuffel and Pradells to take first place and secure his 2026 Olympia entry. Eight days later the qualification period closed; two weeks after Austria, he was back onstage in Milan and won again.

That progression—second, second, first, first—is more informative than looking at either victory alone. It suggests he was not making wild changes between contests. More likely, the competitive package was close, and small improvements in conditioning, presentation, fullness or the way the physique was judged were enough to turn near-wins into wins. For a bodybuilder, that is a much more encouraging trajectory than bouncing between first and tenth with no stable baseline.

The 2025 Olympia Result Is Still the Benchmark He Has to Beat

There is also a reason to keep the hype under control. Grimes finished 14th at the 2025 Mr. Olympia. A successful run through regular-season pro shows does not erase that result, because the Olympia compresses many of the best physiques in the world into one lineup. Athletes who can dominate smaller shows can suddenly have trouble separating themselves when every callout contains elite size, shape, condition and stage experience.

That is the real test for Regan Grimes in 2026: not whether he can win another pro show, but whether the improvements that have been enough to move from second to first are large enough to move him substantially up an Olympia scorecard.

His strengths have always made the upside easy to see. He carries a wide, aesthetic structure for Men’s Open, has a polished overall shape and can look enormous without losing the visual flow that made people notice him early in his career. At the Olympia, though, shape alone does not create separation. Back detail, leg density, conditioning from every angle, posing control and the ability to look equally strong when compared directly with the best men in the division become more important.

A jump from 14th into the first few callouts would be meaningful even if it does not end with a Sandow. That would show his 2026 run translated to the sport’s hardest stage rather than simply producing more wins on the road there.

Four Shows in a Month Can Build Sharpness—and Create a Recovery Problem

Competing this frequently creates an interesting tradeoff. Repeated shows can sharpen posing, timing and stage confidence. An athlete gets multiple opportunities to see how the physique responds to depletion, loading, travel, tanning, pump-up timing and the stress of prejudging. Instead of guessing how a peak week will behave, the team gets live feedback.

But there is a cost. Staying contest-lean for weeks is demanding. Training quality can fall, food and fluid manipulation can become harder to manage, sleep may suffer, travel adds fatigue, and the athlete has less time to make meaningful tissue changes. At some point, the priority shifts from improving the physique to simply preserving it while trying to peak again.

For Grimes, that makes the space between Italy and Olympia critical. He does not need to prove that he can win another regional pro show. He needs to arrive recovered enough to display the best version of the muscle he already has. More training is not automatically better at this stage. The right work is whatever preserves fullness and detail without accumulating fatigue that shows up onstage as a flatter, softer or less controlled package.

This is also why the Italy win can be read two ways. It proves he could maintain form after Austria, which is a positive. It also extended the competitive run. The next few weeks are about converting momentum into recovery rather than treating momentum as a reason to keep pushing every variable harder.

What Grimes Needs to Show at the 2026 Olympia

The most realistic question is not “Can he win the Olympia because he won Italy?” It is “What would make this season a genuine breakthrough at the Olympia?” The answer starts with consistency. The same balanced look that won Austria and Italy has to survive a deeper lineup and more unforgiving comparisons.

Conditioning will matter because it is the easiest way for a well-shaped athlete to lose ground against denser competitors. When everyone is large, separation comes from detail. The back has to stay crisp through rear poses, the legs need to hold definition while he transitions, the midsection has to remain controlled and the presentation has to make his structure look as broad and clean as possible.

He also needs to keep the parts of his physique that make him different. Chasing extra scale weight at the last minute would be a poor trade if it blurs the lines that give his frame appeal. At this point in prep, the goal is not to invent a new body. It is to present the most complete version of the one that has already won twice.

The first callouts will tell the story quickly. If Grimes is moved into comparisons with the established top contenders, fans will have immediate evidence that the judges see a meaningful step forward. If he is pushed toward the middle of a larger callout, the same weaknesses that limited his 2025 placing may still be controlling the result. That makes prejudging more important than social-media photos or pre-show predictions. The useful signal will be who he is compared against, how long he stays in those comparisons and whether his structure holds up next to athletes carrying more back thickness or lower-body density.

That is what makes Grimes one of the more interesting Olympia stories of the month. His season contains an obvious before-and-after narrative: 14th at the 2025 Olympia, then runner-up in Atlanta, runner-up in Texas, winner in Austria and winner in Italy. The next data point is the one that decides how much those wins actually changed his place in the Men’s Open hierarchy.

The Bigger Lesson: Momentum Only Matters If It Transfers to the Main Stage

Regan Grimes practicing a bodybuilding side pose in a gym

Bodybuilding rewards momentum, but not in the same way a win streak works in a timed or scored sport. Every contest is a fresh comparison. A trophy does not carry extra points into the next prejudging. What momentum can provide is evidence that the preparation process is producing repeatable results.

Grimes now has that evidence. He showed that he could rebound from two runner-up finishes, win when qualification pressure was highest, and then repeat the result in Milan. The challenge is to use the remaining time before Olympia to preserve the qualities that created those wins instead of chasing dramatic last-minute changes.

If he arrives in Las Vegas clearly improved from 2025 and moves meaningfully up the lineup, the 2026 season becomes more than a productive run of pro-show trophies. It becomes the season in which his long-discussed potential started translating against the deepest field. If he remains buried in the same range, Austria and Italy will still be strong wins, but the gap between winning regular-season shows and contending at Olympia will remain the central issue.

Either way, the Italy victory gave the question a lot more weight. Regan Grimes is not heading toward the Olympia trying to rescue a disappointing season. He is heading there after the best month of competitive momentum he has had in years, with a clear opportunity to prove that the rise is bigger than the shows that created it.
