Aaron Judge on the field for the New York Yankees

Aaron Judge Is Back on the IL — and the Yankees' Timing Could Not Be Worse

GOATIFY

Aaron Judge is going back on the injured list at almost the worst possible time for the New York Yankees. The captain will be placed on the 10-day IL with a right calf strain after feeling tightness during Wednesday's game against Minnesota. If the move is backdated to Thursday, Judge cannot return until September 27 — the final day of the regular season.

The timing is especially painful because Judge had only returned on September 8 after missing more than three months with a rib injury. New York has already secured a postseason place, but it still trails Tampa Bay in the AL East and is trying to enter October with its lineup finally intact.

Judge barely had time to get back before another setback

Judge played only seven games after returning from the rib fracture that cost him most of the summer. He went 4-for-26 in that stretch with one extra-base hit and 13 strikeouts, numbers that showed he was still trying to rediscover normal game timing. Now the Yankees have to pause that process again.

Manager Aaron Boone has avoided promising a postseason return. The injury is a calf strain rather than a recurrence of the rib problem, but the calendar matters as much as the diagnosis. There are too few regular-season games left to build Judge back gradually if he is not ready by the final weekend.

The Yankees already proved they can survive without Judge

Yankees in the 2026 MLB playoff race

The optimistic case is that New York has already lived through this problem. The Yankees went 46-39 during Judge's long absence and leaned heavily on pitching. Cam Schlittler has emerged as a Cy Young-level starter, while Max Fried, Carlos Rodón and Gerrit Cole give the club the kind of rotation that can carry a short postseason series.

That does not make Judge replaceable. Even in an injury-shortened season, his presence changes how opponents navigate the lineup. But New York has had months to learn how to win games when the middle of the order is missing its biggest threat. Heliot Ramos and the rest of the outfield depth will again have to absorb innings and at-bats.

The real question is whether Judge can be ready for October

The 2026 MLB playoff race

The Yankees are five games behind the Rays and have a crucial four-game series with Tampa Bay ahead. Catching the division leader is now harder, but the bigger concern is postseason readiness. A player can be medically cleared and still need time to regain timing against playoff pitching.

Judge's first return illustrated that gap. He was healthy enough to play but had not yet found his normal production. If he returns directly into a Wild Card Series, the Yankees may have to accept that the version of Judge they get is still working his way back.

That is why caution makes sense even with the calendar shrinking. Pushing a calf strain for a handful of regular-season games could jeopardize the only stretch that truly matters now. New York has enough pitching and depth to reach October without Judge. Its championship ceiling, however, looks very different if its captain cannot join the lineup once it gets there.
