Aaron Pico Gets Losene Keita at UFC 333 — and the Replacement May Be More Dangerous

GOATIFY

Aaron Pico still has his UFC 333 fight, but almost everything about the assignment has changed. Arnold Allen is out of the October 24 card in Abu Dhabi after ongoing rehabilitation left him without enough time to prepare. Losene Keita has accepted the replacement fight, turning Pico's matchup from a test against an established top contender into a volatile clash with one of the division's hottest knockout threats.

The change may actually make the fight less predictable. Allen offered experience, technical striking and a clear ranking opportunity. Keita brings fresh momentum, explosive power and the confidence of a first-round knockout at UFC Paris only weeks ago.

Allen's withdrawal changes the UFC 333 equation

Allen's exit is not being described as a brand-new injury. He has been rehabilitating after previous treatments, and the remaining preparation window was simply too short. The UFC chose to keep Pico on the card rather than wait for Allen, which is how Keita entered the picture.

For Pico, that means a new style with roughly a month to adjust. The upside is that he keeps his place on a major numbered card. The downside is that a short-notice opponent can be difficult to prepare for, especially when that opponent carries the kind of early finishing threat Keita just displayed in Paris.

Keita arrives with exactly the kind of momentum a replacement needs

Keita's UFC start has already shown both sides of his game. He lost a close split decision in his debut, then responded by stopping Muhammad Naimov in the first round in Paris. The finish came at 2:54 and earned a Performance of the Night bonus.

That matters because Keita is not entering UFC 333 as an unknown prospect being rushed into a difficult matchup. He is a former two-division champion outside the UFC with a 17-2 professional record and a long history of finishing opponents. The Naimov win simply proved that the power translates at UFC level.

Taking Pico on relatively short notice also reduces the temptation to overthink the opportunity. Keita can arrive with the same aggressive identity that produced the Paris knockout and force Pico to solve it in real time.

Pico finally has UFC momentum of his own

Pico's UFC career began badly when Lerone Murphy knocked him out in his debut, but his response against Patricio Pitbull was much more important than the loss. Pico mixed sharp boxing with takedowns, hurt the former Bellator champion and won a clear unanimous decision at UFC 327.

The performance showed a more patient version of a fighter who has always possessed elite physical tools. Pico did not need to force an early finish. He controlled the pace, attacked the body and used his wrestling when it improved the position rather than simply proving he could wrestle.

That balance may be essential against Keita. Meeting an explosive puncher in open exchanges is risky, but Pico has the wrestling background to change the terms of the fight if Keita begins finding his timing.

The replacement fight may create a new featherweight contender

UFC 333 is already built around the featherweight title picture, with Alexander Volkanovski and Movsar Evloev at the top of the card. That gives Pico and Keita an obvious audience: the division's champion, leading contenders and matchmakers will all be focused on the same event.

Pico was originally booked against Allen because the UFC wanted to test whether his Pitbull win could carry him toward the top of the rankings. Keita is not as highly ranked, but a decisive win over an explosive 17-2 opponent would still move Pico forward. For Keita, the upside is even larger. Beating Pico just weeks after the Naimov knockout would transform one strong UFC win into a genuine contender run.

Allen's withdrawal removed one compelling matchup, but the replacement has created a different kind of danger. Pico now faces a fighter with little to lose and enormous momentum. Keita gets the opportunity to turn a short-notice call into the biggest win of his UFC career. For a division already moving quickly, that makes UFC 333 even more interesting.
