Knecht Is on the Bubble — the Nesmith Trade Idea Solves Two Lakers Problems at Once

The Lakers have 16 players on guaranteed contracts, one more than the regular-season limit, and Dalton Knecht is suddenly at the center of a proposed solution that would do more than just clear a spot.
A trade concept sending Knecht and Jarred Vanderbilt to Indiana for Aaron Nesmith has surfaced as the Lakers continue looking for a two-way wing around Luka Doncic. No deal is finalized, and the framework remains a proposal rather than an agreed transaction, but it neatly captures what Los Angeles is trying to accomplish before opening night.
Los Angeles needs to trim the roster without wasting the opportunity
Knecht is entering his third NBA season after a difficult 2025-26 campaign in which he averaged 4.2 points and 1.4 rebounds in 10.2 minutes per game. The former No. 17 pick remains a real shooting talent, but his place in the Lakers’ rotation has become increasingly uncertain as the roster has been reshaped around Doncic.
The immediate pressure is contractual. Los Angeles has 16 guaranteed players and must get down to 15 by opening night. Knecht is scheduled to make $4.2 million this season, with the Lakers holding a $6.2 million team option for 2027-28. Vanderbilt is another movable salary, and packaging both players would clear two guaranteed contracts in one move.
The proposed return is what makes the idea more interesting than a pure roster dump. Nesmith is a 6-foot-5 wing who can defend across multiple perimeter matchups, space the floor and play without dominating the ball. That profile makes obvious sense next to Doncic, whose offense works best when the players around him can punish help defenders and survive difficult defensive assignments.
Nesmith is also under contract after agreeing to a two-year extension worth roughly $40 million. He is not a cheap flier, but he is the kind of established two-way rotation player the Lakers have repeatedly searched for. Los Angeles pursued wing upgrades throughout the summer and still looks incomplete on the perimeter.
For Indiana, the logic would be completely different. The Pacers would be trading the better established current player for two younger pieces and future flexibility. Knecht still has shooting upside, Vanderbilt can defend and rebound when healthy, and a future first-round pick swap has been included in the proposed structure. That package is easier to justify if Indiana values the long-term asset play more than keeping Nesmith in the present rotation.
The Lakers’ side of the equation is more urgent. Knecht’s shooting has never been the main concern; the question is whether he can earn enough minutes on a team that needs dependable defense around its star creators. Last season’s limited role left him with little margin for error entering camp, especially with younger and cheaper options competing for back-end roster minutes.
That is why the Nesmith concept is so easy to understand even if it never becomes an actual trade. Los Angeles could turn two uncertain roster pieces into one player with a cleaner role, solve the 16-to-15 roster squeeze automatically and add a wing who does not need touches taken away from Doncic to matter.
The important distinction is that this remains an idea, not a completed move. The Lakers are actively searching for a forward upgrade, Knecht and Vanderbilt are logical trade pieces, and Nesmith fits the archetype Los Angeles needs. Whether Indiana would actually value the package enough to move him is the harder part.
For Knecht, the next few weeks may decide whether he gets another chance to carve out a role in Los Angeles or becomes the piece used to finish the roster around Doncic. Either way, the Lakers’ numbers force a decision soon. Someone has to go before opening night, and a trade that improves the rotation while fixing the roster math would be a much better outcome than simply cutting a guaranteed player.
