The standoff ended with franchise-quarterback money
Only weeks ago, the relationship looked much less comfortable. Mayfield had reached training camp without the extension he wanted and made it clear that the offers he had seen left him feeling undervalued. The Buccaneers had already restructured his existing deal without adding years, while Mayfield was entering the final season of the three-year contract he signed in 2024.
That created a simple but dangerous negotiating setup. Mayfield could play out the year and potentially reach the market at 32, while Tampa Bay risked allowing a proven starter to get close enough to free agency for other teams to become relevant. The Buccaneers could always consider the franchise tag, but that would have been an expensive temporary answer rather than the long-term solution both sides said they preferred.
The new deal removes that uncertainty. Tampa Bay is not paying Mayfield like a bridge quarterback or a veteran it hopes to replace soon. Mayfield also won the security argument. His concern was never simply whether he could get another contract. He had already rebuilt his career enough to know he would have a market. Tampa Bay chose certainty after a year that tested Mayfield’s value

He arrived in Tampa on a one-year prove-it contract after Cleveland moved on and short stops in Carolina and Los Angeles left his long-term future unclear. He responded with 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2023, won the NFC South and helped Tampa Bay win a playoff game. The 2024 season then confirmed that the rebound was not a one-year accident.
Now the argument has shifted again. Mayfield no longer needs to prove he belongs in Tampa Bay or prove he can earn a major contract. The standard becomes what the Buccaneers can accomplish with him after making this commitment.
