Ben Simmons Is Healthy — Sacramento Is Still Making Him Wait

GOATIFY

Sacramento is making Ben Simmons wait a little longer for the part everyone actually wants to see. He will not play in the Kings' preseason opener against the Lakers, with his debut now expected Thursday in Los Angeles or Saturday at Golden State. The important detail is that the delay is not being framed as an injury setback. Reporting around the team says Simmons is healthy, has had one of Sacramento's strongest camps and is simply being ramped up carefully after more than a year without an NBA game.

That makes the next few days more interesting than a normal preseason availability note. Simmons last appeared in April 2025, then sat out the entire 2025-26 season while focusing on his body. Sacramento signed him to a one-year deal with very little financial risk, but the upside is obvious if the early camp reports are even partly real. The Kings do not need the old Philadelphia version immediately. They need to learn whether the size, defense and playmaking that once made Simmons an All-NBA player can become dependable again.

Sacramento's caution is the point, not a setback

The caution makes sense because Simmons' comeback is not a normal return from a two-week injury. His last NBA season was 2024-25, when he split 51 games between Brooklyn and the Clippers and averaged 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists. He then spent a full season outside the league. No matter how good a player looks in September workouts, there is a difference between training-camp rhythm and absorbing NBA contact every other night.

Sacramento appears to understand that distinction. The plan is not to test whether Simmons can survive one preseason game; it is to build a version of him that can keep playing once the regular season starts. Holding him out of the opener gives the Kings more controlled practice time and avoids turning a meaningless October exhibition into a referendum on a comeback that has taken more than a year.

That patience is easier because the news from camp has been positive. Simmons has said that he feels healthy physically and mentally, and local reporting has described the ordinary soreness of training as something he is actually happy to experience after years of back trouble. Head coach Doug Christie has praised his communication, defensive versatility and ability to read the floor. Those are useful signs because none of them depend on Simmons suddenly becoming a high-volume shooter.

The defensive piece may be the cleanest route back into a meaningful role. At 6-foot-10, Simmons can still give Sacramento a switchable body against guards, wings and larger forwards. The Kings finished last season 22-60, so they have little reason to protect a rigid veteran hierarchy. If Simmons can defend, rebound and push the ball after stops, he can earn minutes without needing plays called for him.

The offensive question is more complicated. His shooting limitations have not disappeared simply because he is healthy, and opponents will test Sacramento's spacing whenever Simmons shares the floor with another non-shooter. But the Kings can reduce that problem by using him as a screener, transition creator and secondary playmaker rather than asking him to recreate the ball-dominant role he had in Philadelphia. The comeback becomes much more realistic if success is defined by useful possessions instead of old box-score expectations.

The stronger camp reports make the eventual role more interesting

The most intriguing part of the latest reporting is not the Thursday-or-Saturday timeline. It is the suggestion that Simmons could push into Sacramento's starting lineup within the first month if his camp form carries into games.

That would be a dramatic shift from the way his signing looked in September. A one-year, low-cost contract suggested a rehabilitation project and veteran depth behind rookie guard Darius Acuff Jr. Simmons earning starter-level minutes would mean the Kings had found something more valuable: a big initiator who can organize possessions while younger guards develop.

There is a basketball case for experimenting. Domantas Sabonis already gives Sacramento a hub who can pass from the elbows and create handoff actions. Simmons can add another transition engine and defender without demanding a high shot volume. Used together, they would force the coaching staff to solve spacing, but they could also give the Kings unusual size and passing across multiple positions. Used separately, Simmons could stabilize bench groups and let Sacramento keep a creator on the floor when Sabonis rests.

The roster context matters too. Sacramento is not entering this season as a finished contender. After a 22-win year, the organization needs information almost as much as it needs victories. Can Acuff become the long-term lead guard? How much can the offense still run through Sabonis? Which veterans fit the next competitive version of the team? Simmons is another experiment inside that larger evaluation, and his contract allows the Kings to be aggressive without being trapped if it fails.

That is why the cautious debut plan and the optimistic camp reports are not contradictory. Sacramento can believe Simmons looks excellent and still refuse to rush him. In fact, the stronger the team thinks he has looked, the more reason there is to protect the runway. The useful outcome is not winning a preseason headline. It is getting enough healthy games to discover what role actually survives once opponents scout him again.

Thursday against the Lakers would be the first chance. Saturday against Golden State is the fallback. Either way, the first appearance should be treated as a starting point rather than a verdict. Simmons has spent years being judged against the player he was at 22. Sacramento's better question is simpler: what can the 30-year-old version do now, and can he do it repeatedly?

For Simmons, simply returning to an NBA floor will close a long gap. For the Kings, the bigger test begins after that moment. A strong camp can earn opportunity, but only games can show whether his defense, playmaking and health hold up against real pace and contact.

Sacramento has the luxury of finding out without forcing the answer. The Kings can ramp him up, experiment with lineups and let his role grow if he earns it. If the early reports are right, the comeback may become more than a feel-good roster story. But the smartest thing Sacramento is doing right now is refusing to confuse promising signs with proof.
