Deebo Samuel catches a football in a San Francisco 49ers uniform in 2026

Deebo Is Out — the 5–0 49ers Have Only Four Healthy Receivers

GOATIFY

San Francisco is 5–0, yet its most urgent Week 6 question is not about the standings. It is about who will be healthy enough to catch passes. Deebo Samuel's right hamstring injury, suffered in Sunday's 32–29 victory at Seattle, has taken another proven playmaker out of an already battered receiving group. Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Samuel will miss at least the next couple of games, leaving an undefeated team with a remarkably short list of available wide receivers.

The timing is particularly awkward. The 49ers are preparing for a Monday-night meeting with Washington, followed by a trip to Atlanta and then their Week 8 bye. Samuel's absence removes much more than an ordinary target from Brock Purdy's options: it takes away a receiver who can line up in the backfield, carry on designed runs and influence how defenses align before the snap. The immediate task is to preserve that variety without pretending a replacement can reproduce it alone.

Samuel's injury turns a hard-fought win into a short-term roster problem

The injury happened with 5:06 remaining in the third quarter in Seattle. Samuel was carrying the ball toward the left side when he went down as a tackle arrived, lost possession and remained on the turf. He eventually walked off, but the medical staff's attention and the swift decision to rule him out made clear that this was not a routine brief exit. Seattle recovered the fumble and converted the field position into a field goal, a reminder that one damaging play can alter both the score and the personnel available for the next month.

San Francisco still escaped with a 32–29 victory, but the Monday update was less comforting than the result. Further examination of Samuel's right hamstring convinced Shanahan that the receiver would be unavailable for multiple games. No precise return date was announced. That distinction matters: a forecast of at least a couple of weeks is a minimum, not a guarantee that he will be ready immediately after it. The team will have to follow his response to treatment and activity rather than work backward from a desired return.

Samuel had made an immediate difference since rejoining San Francisco before the season. Through five games he had 16 receptions for 206 yards and three receiving touchdowns, plus 78 yards on nine rushing attempts. He had also handled kickoff returns. Those numbers show why this is a problem that reaches beyond one position group. A conventional receiver might be replaced by distributing a few targets; Samuel's touches are deliberately spread across several phases of the offense.

The 49ers are undefeated because they have survived moments when a game became uncomfortable. The Seattle victory required another late response after a turnover-heavy afternoon. But the value of that resilience changes when injuries begin to accumulate. It is possible to win a single game with an improvised lineup and still face a more complicated question about whether that lineup can remain effective for several weeks.

Evans and Cooks must lead a receiver room running out of experienced options

The healthy receiver list is now strikingly short: Mike Evans, Brandin Cooks, Jordan Watkins and Jacob Cowing are the four available wideouts on San Francisco's active roster. Evans is the clear established centerpiece. Through five games he has 24 catches for 326 yards and three touchdowns, including seven receptions for 113 yards and a score in Seattle while managing a rib issue. His size, catch radius and experience offer Purdy a dependable target, but making one veteran carry the full receiving burden would be an invitation for defenses to narrow their attention.

Cooks, signed in September, is the most obvious partner. He scored a touchdown against the Seahawks and brings route-running experience that can help keep the passing game organized. That does not mean his role is identical to Samuel's. Cooks can threaten space as a traditional wideout; he does not automatically recreate the backfield motion, contact balance and rushing threat that make Samuel unusual. The offense should treat their differences as a planning consideration rather than a reason to force the same plays on a different player.

The next layer is thin. Watkins and Cowing have only nine career NFL catches between them, a very small sample for two players who could suddenly be asked to handle meaningful snaps in a prime-time game. San Francisco has Will Pauling, Xavier Smith and Malik Turner on the practice squad, giving the staff some internal flexibility. Elevating or signing depth would address the number of available bodies, but it would not instantly supply the timing and trust developed by a regular first-team receiving group.

The longer injury list explains why there is so little margin. Ricky Pearsall underwent season-ending knee surgery before the campaign. De'Zhaun Stribling remains out after an ankle operation, while Demarcus Robinson and Christian Kirk are on injured reserve with ankle and calf problems respectively. Robinson is not yet eligible to reopen his practice window for the Washington game; Kirk's return to practice also appears unlikely this week. The 49ers cannot plan their next contest as though a cavalry of healthy receivers will arrive on Wednesday.

Shanahan has said the team believes it has players in the building who can help, while leaving open the possibility of looking elsewhere. That is a sensible distinction. A trade or signing is a possible response, not an announced move. For now, the clearest immediate path is to make Evans and Cooks the experienced foundation and give younger receivers specific, manageable assignments instead of demanding that every available player learn every role at once.

Purdy and the run game can absorb touches, but not Samuel's entire role

San Francisco's offense on the field against Seattle in October 2026

Samuel's absence does not mean the 49ers must abandon the principles that have made Shanahan's offense difficult to defend. It does mean they need to separate the functions he performs. Some of his short-area touches can move to running backs, some downfield targets can go to Evans, and some intermediate work can be divided among Cooks, the tight ends and the younger receivers. The danger is asking any one substitute to become a one-for-one copy of a player whose value comes from doing several jobs.

Christian McCaffrey is central to that adjustment. His presence already makes it possible to threaten defenses with runs, screens and routes from different alignments. San Francisco can use the run game and play-action to keep linebackers honest, then create defined reads for Purdy rather than leaving an inexperienced wideout to win repeated isolated matchups. That approach will not eliminate the need for receiver separation, but it can reduce how often the offense depends on it.

George Kittle provides another reliable answer in the middle of the field, particularly when an opponent tries to squeeze outside throwing lanes. He can influence the defense before the snap as a blocker and after the snap as a receiving option. The trade-off is that heavier use of tight ends or backs can make personnel packages easier to identify if the 49ers become predictable. Shanahan's challenge is to preserve uncertainty about who will carry, block or release, even without the player who usually creates that uncertainty.

Purdy's performance in Seattle illustrated both the possibilities and the limits. He completed 19 of 29 passes for 189 yards, two touchdowns and an interception as San Francisco edged a division rival. Evans delivered a major share of the passing production, while Cooks caught a key touchdown. Those are encouraging signs for a team that has been forced to improvise repeatedly, but they do not prove the same distribution will work every week. Washington can prepare for a more concentrated target tree, and the next opponent will have film of how the 49ers responded after Samuel left.

The practical goal should be efficiency, not imitation. A healthy offense can still win with fewer explosive gadget plays if it stays ahead of the chains, protects Purdy and turns red-zone opportunities into touchdowns. The margin for error will be smaller. The Seahawks game showed San Francisco could survive mistakes; a receiver group this thin makes avoiding those mistakes more important than ever.

Washington, Atlanta and the bye give Shanahan a clear but unforgiving timeline

Kyle Shanahan addressing the 49ers after their Week 5 win in Seattle

The schedule offers an obvious dividing line. San Francisco hosts Washington on Monday, October 19, then travels to face Atlanta in Week 7 before taking its Week 8 bye. If Samuel misses at least two games, the bye could give him an additional recovery window without forcing the team to rush him back for a regular-season snap. But that is only a possible benefit of the calendar. Hamstring recovery varies, and the staff has not committed to a specific week for his return.

The next two games also carry very different preparation demands. Washington gets an extra day of rest and film study before the Monday-night matchup, which means the 49ers have some time to refine their receiving packages. The turnaround before Atlanta then becomes tighter. Installing a completely new passing identity in that stretch would be unrealistic; trimming the playbook to combinations that can be executed confidently is a more credible response.

San Francisco may receive help elsewhere on the roster. Shanahan said Nick Bosa, Kyle Juszczyk and James Thompson Jr. have a chance to return against Washington after calf, knee and ankle problems. He was careful not to declare any of them cleared. If Bosa can play, the defense gains a proven pass-rush presence; if Juszczyk returns, the offense regains a fullback who helps disguise run and pass intentions. Those changes could relieve pressure on a thin receiving group indirectly, but they remain possibilities pending further evaluation.

The 49ers are also managing the consequences of injuries beyond offense. Backup linebacker Garret Wallow is expected to miss time with a hamstring issue, while Dre Greenlaw's one-game suspension adds another concern for the Washington matchup unless his appeal changes the situation. A team can be unbeaten and still need to spend significant practice time adjusting its depth chart. That is precisely where San Francisco finds itself.

At 5–0 and with an early cushion in the NFC West, the 49ers have earned breathing room in the standings. They have not earned immunity from the effect of losing a playmaker. The next fortnight will test whether Shanahan can distribute Samuel's responsibilities, protect the healthy veterans and keep the offense varied enough to prevent defenses from crowding its few established receiving options. The record makes San Francisco a contender; the injury response will reveal how durable that contention is.

Samuel's hamstring injury changes the shape of San Francisco's immediate season without changing its ambitions. Evans and Cooks are capable veterans, Purdy has familiar ways to move the offense, and McCaffrey and Kittle give Shanahan more answers than a typical team would have with four healthy wide receivers. But there is no easy substitute for Samuel's combination of receiving, rushing and formation versatility.

Washington and Atlanta will provide the first evidence of whether the 49ers can manage that loss without letting their offense become predictable. The Week 8 bye may help the recovery calendar, but it cannot solve the next two games for them. An undefeated start is an achievement; staying dangerous while the receiver room empties is the harder assignment now.
