Manchester City Replaced 37% of Their Minutes — Now Maresca Has to Make It Look Normal

More than a third of the league minutes City used last season came from players who have not appeared for them in the competition this season. The number is 13,998 minutes out of a possible 37,620, which puts the turnover rate at 37.2%. That is not a normal refresh. It is a near-rebuild happening inside a club still expected to challenge for the Premier League and Champions League immediately.
The scale becomes clearer when placed beside the previous era. Across Pep Guardiola’s 10 seasons, City’s turnover by the same measure averaged only 14.5%. During four of those seasons it never rose above 7.5%. Stability was one of the hidden advantages behind the trophies: the same elite players understood the same spaces, the same pressing cues and the same expectations year after year.
Maresca has inherited the opposite problem. He is not being given a transition season. He has to teach a significantly altered team how to function while the scoreboard keeps demanding Manchester City standards.
A 37.2% Turnover Rate Changes More Than the Team Sheet
The departures are not fringe losses. Bernardo Silva and Rodri were central to the Guardiola machine for years. Nico González spent only 18 months at City, while Tijjani Reijnders departed even sooner. Omar Marmoush and Sávio, who combined for 50 league starts, both moved to Tottenham. When that much playing time disappears at once, the replacement challenge is not simply about finding enough talent.
Minutes carry relationships with them. A holding midfielder learns exactly when a centre-back will step out. A winger learns when the full-back will overlap. A striker learns which midfielder will release the pass early and which one wants another touch. Those details are built through repetition, and City are now asking players to establish them while competing at the top of the table.
The starting XI against Coventry showed how unusual the situation has become. Rayan Cherki, despite joining only last summer, ranked among City’s longer-serving starters. In the five central defensive positions formed by the goalkeeper, centre-backs and holding midfield, only one starter had been at the club when the 2025-26 season began. Enzo Fernández was pushed into the lineup after Nico O’Reilly was injured in the warm-up, but even without that late change the broader picture would still have been one of rapid turnover.
There are encouraging examples. Marc Guéhi and Antoine Semenyo arrived during last season and quickly became first-choice players. Jérémy Doku remains an important holdover who has yet to feature in the league this term, and his return should restore some continuity. But even adding Doku back into the equation would still leave City with a retention level below the Premier League average.
Coventry Showed Why a Rebuild Can Look Fine Until It Suddenly Looks Fragile
City have not paid for the turnover in points yet. They have opened the league campaign with three wins from three. That matters because rebuilding while winning is far easier than rebuilding while explaining dropped points. The Coventry match, though, supplied a warning about the difference between the result and the control behind it.
Haaland scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory that many expected to be far more comfortable. More than 91% of Fantasy Premier League managers who used their one-off triple-captain option put it on Haaland, a remarkable concentration of confidence in the idea that the promoted side would be overwhelmed. Instead, Coventry stayed in the match and created enough danger to make the final whistle feel valuable rather than inevitable.
Coventry finished with 12 shots and chances worth 1.37 expected goals. During Guardiola’s decade, visiting Premier League teams reached 12 shots at the Etihad only 17 times, and none of those teams were newly promoted. One match does not establish a defensive crisis, but it does show how cohesion can matter even when the individual names still look elite.
City’s turnover rate is also not merely high by their own historical standards. The Premier League average is 31.9%. Only Aston Villa, Tottenham, Newcastle and Brighton currently sit above City by this particular measure, and those are also the only teams that can match or exceed City’s total of five players who logged at least 1,500 league minutes last season without appearing this time around.
The difference is expectation. Villa, Spurs, Newcastle and Brighton can have seasons judged through several lenses: European qualification, development, a cup run or progress under a new coach. City are judged against trophies. A 1-0 win is still three points, but every loose defensive sequence is examined as evidence of whether the new structure will hold up when the opponent is Arsenal, Liverpool, Real Madrid or Bayern rather than Coventry.
That is the tension around Maresca’s start. Results say the transition is working. The underlying churn says it is too early to assume the team has already reached the level of automatic understanding that defined City at their best.
The Manchester Derby Is the First Place Maresca Can Lean Back Toward Familiarity
The next test is Manchester United at Old Trafford, and this is where Maresca has a useful choice. He does not have to prove the rebuild by selecting the newest possible version of City. A derby can be the moment to pull experience back into the side and reduce the number of unfamiliar relationships operating at once.
Phil Foden is the obvious example. United are one of his favorite opponents; only Brighton have conceded more of his goals. O’Reilly is fit again after the warm-up problem that altered the Coventry lineup. Doku is not yet back, but the available established players give Maresca a chance to balance the new core with footballers who already understand what a Manchester derby demands.
United enter the weekend fifth and with an above-average level of squad retention, meaning City’s opponent is dealing with less structural churn. That does not automatically make United the more coherent side, nor does it erase City’s superior start. It simply changes the kind of challenge. Old Trafford is a poor place to discover that a new partnership has not yet learned how to defend the same transition.
Haaland remains the cleanest shortcut through any adjustment period. He has already scored in all three league wins and added two more goals in Europe at Porto. When a team is still building its collective timing, an elite striker who can decide a game from one good delivery reduces the number of things that have to be perfect. Foden can provide another layer of familiarity around him, while Fernández, Cherki, Guéhi, Semenyo and the other newer pieces continue learning the system in real matches.
The longer-term question is whether City can turn this much turnover into an advantage. A younger or refreshed squad can eventually have more physical energy, more tactical flexibility and fewer habits tied to the previous manager. Guéhi and Semenyo are already evidence that newcomers can become central quickly. Cherki has had enough time to move from new arrival to relative veteran in the current group. The rebuild is not inherently a weakness; it is simply a much larger variable than City usually carry into a title race.
Maresca’s challenge is therefore unusual. Most new managers are allowed to point to change as an explanation for inconsistency. At Manchester City, change has to happen almost invisibly. The club replaced 37.2% of last season’s league minutes, lost some of the defining players of the Guardiola era and rewired key areas of the team. Yet the expectation remains the same: win now, compete for everything and make the transformation look routine.
Three league wins have bought Maresca the best possible start. The derby will offer a stronger clue about whether the new City already feels like a team, or whether the perfect record is temporarily running ahead of the rebuild underneath it.
