She also leaves New York as the incoming world No. 1, a remarkable shift for a player whose relationship with this tournament had previously been frustrating. Before this run, she had never gone beyond the fourth round at Flushing Meadows.
That context makes the championship more significant than a simple extension of a good season. Rybakina solved a venue that had never rewarded her best tennis, handled two difficult three-set matches late in the tournament and then beat the two-time defending champion in the final. Her semifinal comeback against Coco Gauff had already demanded patience. The championship match required the same quality after Sabalenka took the second set.
The next obvious milestone is sitting on clay. With Wimbledon, Melbourne and New York now on her résumé, Roland Garros is the only major missing from a career Grand Slam. That does not make Paris an automatic target she will complete, but it changes the way every future French Open run will be framed. The conversation is no longer about whether Rybakina can win multiple majors. It is about whether she can win all four.
The ranking matters for the same reason. No. 1 is not just a number she reached before the final; the US Open result gave it the strongest possible punctuation. Women’s tennis still has too much depth to declare a permanent hierarchy.
