The Yankees and Dodgers Are In — Now the MLB Playoff Race Gets Mean

The Yankees and Dodgers both locked up postseason places on the same night, doing it behind the kind of star power that can change a short series. New York got another home run from Aaron Judge and seven scoreless innings from Max Scherzer. Los Angeles answered with seven scoreless from Tarik Skubal. Around them, the Cubs, Padres, Diamondbacks and Guardians kept applying pressure in races that are still far from settled.
For a regular-season slate in mid-September, it felt unusually close to a postseason preview: frontline pitching, MVP-level bats, and very little margin for teams still chasing.
New York and Los Angeles clinched — but the bigger story is how
The Yankees clinched with a 10-4 win over Minnesota, and the shape of the victory mattered almost as much as the result. Judge hit his 47th home run, a two-run shot that again made the middle of New York's order look dangerous enough to punish one mistake. Giancarlo Stanton added his 27th homer, giving the Yankees the kind of right-handed power pairing that can turn a quiet playoff game in a few swings.
The bigger October signal may have come from the mound. Scherzer worked seven scoreless innings and struck out eight. At this stage of his career, the question is not whether he has a Hall of Fame résumé; it is how much high-leverage October value is still left in his arm. A start like this is exactly why New York wanted veteran depth behind its younger starters.
That matters because the Yankees' postseason conversation has recently revolved around how to arrange a rotation that includes Gerrit Cole and breakout right-hander Cam Schlittler. Clinching removes one source of pressure. It gives the club more freedom to line up starts, manage workloads and decide whether reputation or current form should drive the first games of a series.
Judge remains the center of everything. New York can win with pitching and depth, but its ceiling changes when the captain is controlling the strike zone and driving the ball. His 47th homer was another reminder that opponents cannot simply wait for the bottom of the lineup to beat them.
Los Angeles clinched in a very different-looking 6-0 win over Cincinnati. Skubal allowed four hits across seven scoreless innings and struck out eight. The Dodgers have spent much of the season balancing enormous expectations with health questions, especially around Shohei Ohtani's pitching availability. A dominant Skubal outing changes the October equation because it gives Los Angeles a true game-one-caliber weapon even if the rest of the pitching plan needs flexibility.
The berth also extends one of baseball's defining modern runs: the Dodgers are headed to the postseason for a 14th consecutive season. That consistency is easy to normalize, but it means an entire generation of baseball has barely known a meaningful October without Los Angeles in it.
Clinching, however, is not the same as solving the roster. The Dodgers still need to decide how aggressively to manage their stars, how to structure the rotation behind Skubal, and how much they can ask from a lineup that has carried enormous expectations all year. The benefit now is time. They can make those decisions from inside the field rather than while fighting to enter it.
The Cubs, Padres and Diamondbacks are turning the wild-card race into a sprint
Behind the two clinchers, the National League wild-card picture stayed volatile.
Chicago edged Atlanta 3-2, with Pete Crow-Armstrong hitting his 42nd home run. That number is especially striking when paired with his 37 stolen bases. Crow-Armstrong has become more than an elite defensive center fielder with speed; he has developed into one of the most complete power-speed threats in the sport. Every late-season homer pushes him closer to the kind of 40-homer, 40-steal territory that changes how opponents pitch to an entire lineup.
The Cubs' win also matters because September games between teams around the playoff line create a double effect: one club gains ground while another loses an opportunity. Chicago does not need style points now. It needs wins that protect its position and force the chasing pack to burn calendar days.
San Diego is applying a different kind of pressure. The Padres beat Colorado 7-2 for their eighth straight victory. Fernando Tatis Jr. collected three hits, while Luis Arraez and Gavin Sheets homered. An eight-game winning streak this late in the season can rewrite a bracket quickly because there are not enough games left for rivals to comfortably wait out the surge.
The Padres are also dangerous because their offense can win in different ways. Tatis can create damage with power, speed and extra-base hits; Arraez can extend innings with contact; and secondary power from hitters such as Sheets makes it harder to pitch around the biggest names. That balance matters more in October, when elite pitching can neutralize one-dimensional offenses.
Arizona stayed in the mix with a 3-1 win over Miami. Corbin Carroll hit his 38th homer, while Ryne Nelson delivered eight scoreless innings and allowed only two hits. Carroll's season continues to reinforce the same lesson as Crow-Armstrong's: premium athleticism becomes much more valuable when it is paired with real home-run power. A centerpiece player who can change a game on the bases and with one swing gives a contender multiple ways to manufacture offense when hits become scarce.
Nelson's outing may be just as important for Arizona's playoff hopes. Short series are often decided by whether a team can find a starter who turns six or seven innings into a low-variance game. Eight scoreless innings in mid-September is the kind of performance that earns trust for October.
October is already rewarding teams that can win in more than one way
Cleveland also kept pushing with a 7-3 win over Kansas City. Steven Kwan produced four hits and homered twice, an unusually loud power night from a hitter whose value is normally built around contact, on-base ability and controlling at-bats. When a player like Kwan adds slugging to that profile, the Guardians become much harder to navigate at the top of the order.
The broader takeaway from the night is that the playoff race is separating into two different problems.
For the Yankees and Dodgers, the question is no longer whether they will be there. It is how they optimize what they have. Rotation order, workload management, bullpen roles and health become more important than simply stacking regular-season wins.
For the Cubs, Padres, Diamondbacks, Guardians and other clubs still fighting for position, there is less room for experimentation. Every game can alter seeding, wild-card leverage or the opponent waiting in the first round. That is why late-September streaks matter so much: an eight-game run from San Diego or a cluster of dominant starts can erase months of small standings differences.
There is also a star-power theme running through the results. Judge, Crow-Armstrong, Carroll and Tatis are not just recognizable names; they represent different ways to tilt a postseason game. Judge can end an at-bat with one pitch. Crow-Armstrong and Carroll combine power with speed and elite defensive value. Tatis can pressure a defense before and after the ball is put in play.
Then there are the pitchers. Scherzer and Skubal arrived at their scoreless lines from opposite ends of the career arc, but the October value is similar. A starter who can dominate seven innings changes bullpen usage for the entire series. Nelson's eight scoreless for Arizona offered the same reminder.
The standings will keep moving, but September 15 established something important: several contenders are not merely surviving the final stretch. They are finding postseason-caliber performances at exactly the right time.
New York and Los Angeles can now plan for October. The teams behind them still have to earn every inch of it.
