Olid's history makes that tension particularly interesting. At Hearts she took a team from the bottom of the Scottish game to a league title over five years, helping oversee the shift toward a professional setup while developing younger players. That résumé makes her a logical fit for a club talking about sustainability. It also shows why judging the project after three weeks would be absurd. Her strongest work has always depended on building a structure rather than applying a quick cosmetic fix.

The issue is that Manchester United do not operate in a vacuum. The badge, resources and expectations create pressure even when the internal timeline says development. A fourth-place finish last season already left the club outside the Champions League places. Another slow start would quickly turn a patient project into a weekly debate about whether United are keeping pace with the WSL's fastest-moving rivals.

The practical solution may be to simplify some of the more ambitious ideas, protect the middle of the pitch and give the team's established creators clearer attacking reference points until the newcomers are fully integrated.

January matters because Olid has already indicated that additions will be needed to fully execute her game model. But January is a long way away in league terms. Twelve WSL games arrive first. If United are still within touching distance of the Champions League places by then, the winter window can become an accelerator. If the gap has already opened, even good recruitment may only be repairing damage.

That makes the immediate objective less glamorous than a title challenge but just as important: survive the compressed transition without losing confidence. The second-half improvement against London City hinted that the players can execute more of Olid's ideas once they settle. Now they have to reach that level earlier in matches and sustain it against stronger opponents.

There is also a human element that should not be ignored. Olid has faced sexist abuse online before she has even had a meaningful run of games. None of that has anything to do with whether her football works. The sporting questions are legitimate — recruitment, investment, tactical adaptation and results — but the personal abuse is not.
