Mark Williams’ Shoulder Surgery Just Changed Phoenix’s Opening-Month Plan

Williams underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum suffered during an offseason workout, and there is no firm return date yet. The expectation is that he will miss an extended stretch. For a Suns team that just committed three years and $38 million to the 24-year-old center, the timing turns what looked like a settled position into one of the first major questions of the new season.
Williams’ latest injury changes Phoenix’s opening-month math
Williams finally put together the healthiest season of his NBA career in 2025-26, appearing in 60 games. That mattered because availability has followed him since his Charlotte days and even helped derail the proposed Lakers trade in February 2025 after Los Angeles raised concerns following his physical.
Phoenix later acquired him from Charlotte in June 2025 and got useful production immediately. Williams averaged 11.7 points and 8.0 rebounds in his first Suns season, giving the roster a genuine interior finisher and rebounder around Devin Booker and the rest of the perimeter core. His 64-percent-plus finishing also gave Phoenix an efficient target around the rim without needing plays called for him.
The problem is that this shoulder issue lands just as the Suns were preparing to hand Williams the starting center job again. Training camp begins Sept. 29 and the regular season opens Oct. 21 in Portland. Without a concrete timetable, Phoenix has to prepare as though Williams will not be ready for the opening stretch rather than treating the surgery as a minor preseason interruption.
Maluach suddenly has a much bigger job
The clearest beneficiary is Khaman Maluach. The 2025 No. 10 pick played only a limited role as a rookie, averaging 3.0 points and 2.9 rebounds across 46 appearances, but his development curve is now being accelerated by circumstance. Phoenix no longer has the luxury of easing him into responsibility behind an established starter.
That does not mean Maluach has to replace everything Williams does. It means the Suns need enough rim protection, rebounding, screening and vertical pressure from the young center position to prevent the injury from changing how the entire starting group operates. Booker, Dillon Brooks, Jalen Green and Miles Bridges give Phoenix plenty of creation and scoring, but the lineup becomes much easier to attack if the middle of the floor is unstable.
There is also a longer-term layer to this. Phoenix just guaranteed Williams $38 million over three years because his combination of age, size and production made him worth betting on despite his medical history. A torn labrum does not erase that logic, but it does revive the availability question almost immediately after the contract was signed.
If Maluach can hold the position together, the Suns can be patient and avoid rushing Williams. If he struggles, every update on Williams’ rehab becomes more urgent. That makes the first weeks of camp unusually important for a second-year center who was not supposed to carry this much of the frontcourt burden this soon.
Phoenix still has time before games count, but this is already more than a routine camp injury. Williams was supposed to be one of the stabilizers of the Suns’ starting five. Now his recovery — and Maluach’s readiness — will help determine whether Phoenix begins 2026-27 with the balanced rotation it envisioned or spends October improvising around another major absence.
