Ryan Garcia Wants One More Fight — Then Tank Davis at 147
GOATIFYRyan Garcia is not treating his two-round win over Conor Benn like the end of a campaign. He is treating it like the beginning of a much busier one.
Fresh from retaining the WBC welterweight title in Las Vegas, Garcia says he wants to return as soon as December or January, take a stay-busy fight, and then position himself for something much larger around Cinco de Mayo. The names around him now range from Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz and Angel Fierro to Teofimo Lopez, Devin Haney, Terence Crawford and, most emotionally, Gervonta Davis.
The most interesting part is not simply the size of Garcia’s wish list. It is that his next move could decide which version of his career comes next: active champion building momentum, undisputed-title hunter, or blockbuster rematch specialist.
Garcia wants activity before another mega-fight
Garcia’s immediate plan is unusually straightforward for a fighter with so many lucrative options. Rather than waiting until spring for the biggest possible payday, he wants another fight before the end of the year or at the start of 2027. Cruz and Fierro have been floated as possible opponents for that slot.
That matters because Garcia has only just re-established a stable championship rhythm. His recent career has included the 2023 loss to Davis, the Devin Haney result that was later changed to a no-contest, a loss to Rolly Romero, and then a sharp recovery. He won the WBC welterweight title from Mario Barrios in February and followed it by stopping Benn in the second round on September 12.
The Benn fight also showed why staying active could be attractive. Garcia weighed 145.5 pounds, looked comfortable at welterweight and produced his first stoppage victory since late 2023. Benn had actually made 146 after a difficult drop back toward the division, but Garcia’s speed and right hand changed the fight almost immediately in round two.
There was debate about whether the stoppage came slightly early, yet the broader point was harder to dispute: Garcia left the ring with his title, momentum and a much wider set of options than he had entering 2026.
The Tank rematch is really a fight over weight
The Davis rematch remains the most personal unfinished business on Garcia’s board. Their first meeting in April 2023 was one of boxing’s biggest events, drawing a sold-out crowd of 20,842 at T-Mobile Arena. Davis dropped Garcia in the second round and finished him with a body shot in the seventh.
But the conditions of that fight have never stopped being part of the rematch argument. It was contested at a 136-pound catchweight and included a 10-pound rehydration clause. Garcia has repeatedly argued that the cut compromised him. Whether that explanation changes anyone’s view of the first result is almost beside the point now, because it has become the central negotiating issue for fight two.
Garcia says Davis and adviser Al Haymon have made contact with his team. His answer is effectively 147 pounds or no fight. Davis, meanwhile, has indicated that 140 is as high as he wants to go. Garcia also wants Davis to take a tune-up first so that a rematch is not built around a long layoff.
That request has logic behind it. Davis has not had a conventional boxing appearance since his majority draw with Lamont Roach in March 2025, and his career has since been interrupted by legal issues and cancelled plans. A comeback bout would answer basic competitive questions before promoters try to sell another enormous Garcia-Davis event.
The irony is that both fighters now have more leverage than they did in 2023, but in very different places. Garcia owns a welterweight belt and wants the rematch at his current division. Davis owns the decisive first victory and has little incentive to accept a weight he considers excessive. The fight can be huge and still be difficult to make.
Teofimo, Haney and Crawford make the decision harder
Tank is not Garcia’s only major route. Immediately after beating Benn, Garcia talked about Teofimo Lopez as a unification target. That path has a sporting attraction the Davis rematch cannot offer: the chance to consolidate championship hardware at 147 and make the division revolve around one fight.
Then there is Haney. Garcia still wants another meeting, and an undisputed scenario would give their rivalry a cleaner championship frame than their chaotic 2024 encounter. Shakur Stevenson has also hovered around the conversation, which means Garcia can realistically choose between rivalry, unification and pure star power.
Crawford is the wild card. Garcia has publicly challenged the retired great to return, but Crawford has shown little interest and has pointed Garcia toward active elite opponents instead. It is the least practical option right now, even if the names alone would create attention.
That leaves Garcia with a sequencing problem rather than a shortage of opportunities. A December or January tune-up keeps him active but introduces risk. A Lopez unification could strengthen his claim as the leading welterweight. Haney offers unresolved history. Davis offers the biggest chance to rewrite the most famous loss of Garcia’s career.
And that is why the next few months matter. Garcia does not need to manufacture a rivalry or search for relevance. He needs to choose which valuable path he is willing to risk first.
