Zverev Finally Owns New York — Two Majors Changed Everything
GOATIFYAlexander Zverev came back to New York with the memory of 2020 still attached to his name. He left this time with a second Grand Slam trophy, a second major title in the same season and one of the strongest arguments that his 2026 has moved beyond breakthrough territory.
The top seed beat Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-2 in Sunday’s US Open final, denying the American a first major title and extending the long wait for a U.S. men’s Grand Slam champion. Shelton had the crowd, the serve and the momentum of a spectacular run through the draw. Zverev had the cleaner match.
That difference showed almost immediately. Shelton dropped his opening service game and spent much of the first two sets trying to recover from behind. Zverev absorbed the noise inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, protected his own serve when the pressure rose and played a nearly perfect second-set tiebreak. Even when Shelton finally broke through to take the third set, Zverev answered by breaking at the start of the fourth and never let the match turn into the kind of five-set escape New York was begging for.
For a player whose major career used to be defined by near misses, the closing image was almost strange in its calmness. Zverev was so locked in that he initially did not realize the final point had ended the championship. Six years after letting a two-set lead disappear in the same stadium, he finally finished the job.
Shelton Made the Run — Zverev Controlled the Final
Shelton’s path to Sunday made him the emotional center of the men’s tournament. He knocked out defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set quarterfinal that finished at 3:33 a.m., then beat Frances Tiafoe to guarantee an American finalist. At 23, with one of the biggest serves in the sport and a home crowd fully invested in ending the U.S. men’s major drought, he arrived with the kind of momentum that can overwhelm a favorite.
Zverev never let the atmosphere become the match.
He broke Shelton in the opening game, and another double fault from Shelton ended the first set. The second set became more dangerous because Shelton stabilized, but Zverev’s serving and discipline separated them in the tiebreak. He jumped ahead 3-0, won the longer exchanges when Shelton tried to change rhythm and repeatedly found first serves that removed the American’s return from the point. A 7-2 tiebreak put Zverev two sets up.
Shelton’s response mattered. He kept attacking, finally broke Zverev and took the third set 7-5. That was the moment when the final could have become a full Arthur Ashe Stadium avalanche. Instead, Zverev broke Shelton to begin the fourth. It was the second time in the match Shelton lost his opening service game in a set, and this time there was no recovery.
The 6-2 fourth set looked decisive because Zverev had reduced the match to the things he does best: big first serves, heavy backhand pressure, controlled baseline patterns and very little emotional waste. Shelton had produced some of the tournament’s most explosive tennis, but the final asked him to repeatedly win from difficult scoreboard positions against a player who was not giving away cheap games.
The loss does not diminish Shelton’s tournament. He beat Alcaraz, reached his first Grand Slam final and showed he belongs in the deepest stages of majors. But the head-to-head with Zverev remains a problem: the German has now won all six meetings, and Sunday was only the second time Shelton had taken a set from him.
Two Majors in One Year Changes Zverev’s Place in the Conversation
The larger story is not simply that Zverev won the US Open. It is that the victory makes Paris look like the beginning of something rather than the end of a long chase.
His French Open title in June finally removed the “best player without a major” label after years of painful losses. He had been two sets up on Dominic Thiem in the 2020 US Open final and came within two points of the trophy. He had lost other major finals and carried the weight of those defeats into every later run. Roland Garros changed that history. New York confirmed the change.
Zverev finished the 2026 Grand Slam season with a 25-2 record. He won the French Open, reached the Wimbledon final and then won the US Open. He also became the No. 1 seed at a major for the first time in New York after Jannik Sinner withdrew, and he took advantage of a draw reshaped by injuries and upsets rather than apologizing for it.
That matters because the men’s game is still judged against Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Zverev has losing recent-era records against both elite rivals, and his route to this title did not require him to beat either one in the final weekend. Shelton removed Alcaraz. Sinner was not in the field. Those facts will be part of the debate.
So will the trophy.
Elite players are supposed to turn opportunity into championships. Zverev did it twice this year. He has now reached the final at all four Grand Slam tournaments in the span of recent seasons, and the question around him has changed from whether he can win the biggest matches to how many he can accumulate while the sport’s younger superstars are also in their prime.
The $5.5 million winner’s prize matches Elena Rybakina’s record-setting women’s payout, but the bigger reward is historical. Zverev returned to the stadium where his first Grand Slam final became his worst tennis memory and left as a two-time major champion.
Shelton, meanwhile, leaves New York with a different kind of proof. His first major final came after beating Alcaraz, surviving the tournament’s latest-ever finish and handling an all-American semifinal. The trophy escaped him, but the ceiling did not.
For Zverev, there is no longer a need to explain the near misses. In 2026, he has two majors to point to instead.
