Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane face off ahead of their 2026 UFC heavyweight title fight

Alex Pereira Pushes for Ciryl Gane Rematch as UFC Heavyweight Picture Stalls

Alex Pereira has made his preferred next move clear: he wants another shot at Ciryl Gane. The former middleweight and light heavyweight champion has been away since his June heavyweight title attempt ended in a second-round stoppage, and he now sees a rematch as the fastest path back toward the history he was chasing.

The heavyweight division gives that idea more oxygen than it might have in a normal championship picture. Gane holds the interim belt, undisputed champion Tom Aspinall is still working toward medical clearance after serious eye problems, and the UFC has not announced the next heavyweight title fight. Pereira believes those circumstances could create room for a second meeting before the end of 2026.

Pereira Is Ready to Move Past the First Fight

Pereira wants another opportunity after Gane stopped his attempt to win a third UFC divisional title.

Pereira’s first heavyweight title opportunity was built around an enormous piece of history. Victory over Gane would have given him championship success in three UFC divisions, adding heavyweight gold to the titles he had already held at middleweight and light heavyweight.

Instead, Gane controlled the decisive exchanges and stopped him in the second round. Pereira spent the aftermath arguing that illegal strikes to the back of his head affected the finish and criticizing the officiating, but his latest message is less about extending that argument and more about getting back into the cage.

That shift matters. Complaints about the first fight cannot change the official result, while a rematch gives Pereira a sporting answer. He has said the matchup with Gane is the one that makes sense to him and has indicated that what he is seeing behind the scenes makes him optimistic it can happen.

Nothing has been formally announced, so the important distinction is that Pereira is campaigning for the fight rather than confirming it. Still, few fighters have his combination of drawing power, championship résumé and willingness to take high-risk opportunities on short notice. That makes his preference difficult for the UFC to ignore.

Gane Has the Belt Pereira Needs to Chase

Gane's interim heavyweight belt makes a rematch meaningful beyond simple revenge.

A second Pereira-Gane fight would not be a routine rematch because Gane currently occupies the key position between Pereira and a heavyweight title. The Frenchman regained interim gold by beating Pereira and was expected to move toward a unification bout with Aspinall.

Gane’s first performance also gives the rematch a clear tactical question. Pereira is one of the most dangerous strikers in the sport, but Gane’s movement, jab and ability to vary his offense prevented the Brazilian from settling into the kind of pressure rhythm that has broken so many opponents. Pereira would need to show a concrete adjustment rather than simply relying on his power to change the outcome.

For Gane, accepting another Pereira fight would carry risk. He already owns the win and has a legitimate claim to wait for a chance at the undisputed title. But waiting becomes harder to justify if Aspinall cannot receive medical clearance on a useful timetable. An interim champion staying inactive for months does little for the division.

Aspinall's Recovery Controls the Heavyweight Decision

Aspinall's medical timeline remains the biggest variable in the heavyweight championship picture.

The entire heavyweight puzzle still turns on Aspinall. His previous meeting with Gane ended in a no-contest after accidental eye pokes, and the champion has spent an extended period dealing with the resulting damage. His representatives have said he is motivated to return, but medical clearance — not simply training readiness — remains the critical step.

If Aspinall is cleared soon, the cleanest sporting choice is obvious: undisputed champion against interim champion. That would settle the belt situation and give the division one recognized titleholder.

If the medical process stretches further, the UFC has to decide whether Gane should remain on the sideline. That is where Pereira’s proposal becomes much more realistic. A marquee rematch could keep the heavyweight belt active, give Gane another major defense and offer Pereira a direct route back into title contention.

The timing would also make commercial sense. Pereira remains one of the promotion’s biggest attractions, and a second fight has an easy story to sell: Gane defending his interim title against a former two-division champion who believes the first ending left unfinished business.

What Pereira Must Prove in a Second Chance

Alex Pereira facing Ciryl Gane in the UFC heavyweight division
A rematch would ask Pereira to solve the speed, range and variety that troubled him in June.

Pereira’s challenge is not merely getting the booking. It is demonstrating that a second fight can look materially different from the first one. Moving to heavyweight gave him more physical mass, but Gane remains unusually fast and mobile for the division, and that style forces opponents to create their own openings.

Pereira has built his UFC career on making rapid adjustments. He reached championship level almost immediately, changed divisions without losing his knockout threat and repeatedly accepted opponents who required very different approaches. A rematch with Gane would test that adaptability again.

The reward is enormous. Beating Gane would put an interim heavyweight belt around Pereira’s waist and revive his pursuit of becoming a champion in a third UFC weight class. It would also create an obvious future collision with Aspinall once the undisputed champion is ready.

For now, the matchup remains a possibility rather than a signed fight. But Pereira has publicly chosen his target, Gane has a belt that needs an active path forward, and Aspinall’s health leaves the UFC with a decision. If the champion’s return continues to slide, Pereira may get exactly the second chance he is asking for.
