Curry's Ankle Scare Wasn't His Knee — But the Warriors' Bigger Problem Remains

GOATIFY

Stephen Curry limped out of Golden State's open practice on Sunday, and Chase Center briefly went quiet. Days before the Warriors open their season against the Lakers, their most important player was forced to leave the court. Coach Steve Kerr later said Curry felt fine, but opening-night availability remains uncertain.

The team identified an ankle issue rather than a repeat of last season's knee problem.

That distinction brought relief, but it did not settle his availability for Wednesday's opener. Golden State must weigh the first game against the long season ahead.

The Practice Scare Looked Worse Than the Initial Update

De'Anthony Melton, Golden State Warriors guard

The moment came about 45 minutes into an open practice that was more competitive than the usual fan event. Curry was making a move against De'Anthony Melton when he appeared to get caught in his footwork. He stopped, favored his right leg and headed toward the locker room. Spectators could not know whether the problem was an ankle, a knee or something worse.

The team later identified a right ankle sprain. Kerr said Curry was in good spirits after their conversation in the training room. That brought relief, but it did not establish a return-to-play timetable.

The distinction matters because Curry's right knee kept him out for more than two months last season. A new problem in the same area would have raised questions about his careful offseason preparation. The ankle issue appears separate, though it can still affect cutting, balance and the ability to create space.

The useful next update will concern Curry's response to treatment and basketball movement, not simply how upbeat he sounded immediately afterward. Golden State needs to know whether he can accelerate, stop and change direction comfortably. Until then, a reassuring quote is not the same thing as clearance to play the Lakers.

A sprain can mean different things depending on severity, and no grading was provided in the immediate update. That uncertainty is why an early optimistic assessment should be treated carefully. Golden State has every reason to monitor Curry's movement in the days ahead rather than turning a short post-practice comment into a promise about the opener.

Last Season's Numbers Explain Why Every Curry Limp Matters

Draymond Green, Golden State Warriors forward

Last season Curry averaged 26.6 points, 4.7 assists and 3.6 rebounds in 43 games. Golden State went 24-19 with him and 13-26 without him. That split illustrates why his availability is so important to a roster built around his movement and shooting.

Defenses plan for Curry before he even touches the ball. His constant movement pulls help defenders away from the paint, creates passing lanes and forces switches. Draymond Green can organize possessions without him, but the threat that bends the opposing defense is much harder to replace. That makes everyone else's shots more difficult.

The Warriors have managed his preseason carefully. Curry played fewer than 18 minutes per game, averaged 13 points and hit 13 of 31 three-point attempts. His shooting looked sharp, but limited minutes do not prove readiness for a full regular-season workload.

At 38, Curry needs a workload that can last through the season. The Warriors must choose when his minutes are most valuable rather than simply maximizing his time on court.

This is also a test of roster construction. If the offense depends on Curry to create nearly every advantage, even sensible rest becomes expensive. The best way to protect him is not simply to reduce his minutes; it is to build lineups that can survive those minutes without him. That requires better decisions from the entire supporting cast.

Golden State's Supporting Cast Is Already Running Short

Brandin Podziemski, Golden State Warriors guard

Golden State's roster would make Curry easier to protect if more teammates were fully available. Jimmy Butler is recovering from a torn ACL, Moses Moody is still rehabbing a leg issue, and Kristaps Porziņģis has been absent because of illness. Those separate setbacks complicate the rotation before the season has even started.

Podziemski and Bassey also missed the open session, although Podziemski had practiced earlier. Their status for Wednesday was not established by those absences alone.

If Curry is limited, Podziemski and De'Anthony Melton will have to handle more of the ball. Green can initiate offense from the frontcourt, but the team still needs someone to create advantages against set defenses. A committee can replace points on the scoreboard more easily than it can replace Curry's constant movement.

The preseason has offered glimpses of useful depth, not a proven solution for long stretches without the franchise star. Young players can add energy and athleticism; veterans can organize possessions. The missing ingredient is reliable secondary shot creation. That weakness exists regardless of how quickly Curry's ankle settles.

There is an important distinction between a roster with several injured players and a roster without useful players. The Warriors still have experienced organizers and developing guards. But those options need clearly defined responsibilities. If the team relies on improvisation whenever Curry sits, it risks repeating the stagnant stretches that made last season so difficult.

Wednesday Against the Lakers Is About More Than One Availability Call

Kristaps Porziņģis, Golden State Warriors center

Golden State opens the 2026-27 season on Wednesday in Los Angeles, where Luka Dončić and a reworked Lakers roster await. The matchup is important, but it remains the first game of 82. Rushing Curry into a demanding contest before his ankle responds well to basketball movement would be a poor exchange for a single opening-night result.

The question is not simply whether Curry is available. It is what workload he can handle and which lineups support him best. The team has not announced a decision on his minutes.

Porziņģis' absence makes the tactical puzzle sharper. Without his size and shooting, Golden State has fewer ways to combine interior presence with spacing. Green can play smaller lineups at center, but those groups face rebounding and rim-protection demands. Curry's movement helps them score; without him, the balance becomes harder.

An opening-night score will attract attention, especially against the Lakers, but the useful evaluation is broader. Can Golden State create decent shots while Curry rests? Can the guards limit turnovers? Can the frontcourt compete while missing players recover? Those answers matter over weeks, not just one nationally watched game.

A good decision on Curry's status will be judged by the information available to the medical staff, not by whether the Warriors win or lose in Los Angeles. If he plays well, that does not mean caution was unnecessary. If he sits, that does not mean the situation is serious. Managing uncertainty is part of the job.

The most encouraging part of Sunday's update is that Curry's right knee was not the reported problem. Kerr's first assessment was positive, but Golden State has not confirmed his opening-night status.

The bigger test is whether the supporting cast can give the Warriors enough stability to be patient. If it cannot, every Curry health scare will feel like a verdict on the team's season.
