Odell Beckham Jr. making a diving catch for the Giants in the 2026 preseason

Odell Beckham Is a Viking — but Minnesota Isn't Asking Him to Be a Star

GOATIFY

Minnesota is 4-0, but the record hides an obvious weakness. The Vikings have won with defense, special teams and just enough offense while their passing game has struggled to create consistent explosive plays. Justin Jefferson missed Week 4 with a sprained ankle, and even before his absence the offense had not looked like the kind of unit an unbeaten contender wants to lean on in January.

That is the context for Odell Beckham Jr. joining the practice squad. The name is enormous; the immediate role is not. Beckham arrives after a three-game return to the Giants produced one target, zero catches and only 20 offensive snaps. Minnesota is not signing the 2016 version of Beckham and does not need to pretend otherwise. It is buying familiarity, experience and a low-risk option while Jefferson's availability remains uncertain.

Why Beckham makes sense for a 4-0 team that still needs offensive help

Justin Jefferson carrying the ball for Minnesota

The fit starts with Kevin O'Connell. Beckham joined the Rams midway through the 2021 season when O'Connell was Los Angeles' offensive coordinator, then became a real part of the Super Bowl run. He caught 21 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns in four playoff games, including the opening touchdown of Super Bowl LVI before a torn ACL ended his night.

That history matters because a practice-squad signing in October has to learn quickly. Beckham already knows the broad language and principles behind an O'Connell offense, even if Minnesota's current system has evolved. He also enters a receiver room built around Jefferson, Jordan Addison and Jauan Jennings rather than arriving with any expectation that the offense will be redesigned for him.

The timing is what makes the move more than nostalgia. Jefferson missed Minnesota's 15-10 win over Miami with the ankle injury he suffered against Tampa Bay. The Vikings still moved to 4-0, but their passing attack has been the statistical weak point of an otherwise excellent start. T.J. Hockenson had to carry a huge share of the receiving work against Miami, catching 13 passes for 119 yards, while Addison led the wide receivers with four catches for 52 yards.

Beckham therefore gives Minnesota a veteran contingency rather than a promised starter. If Jefferson needs another week, the Vikings can elevate Beckham and ask for a narrow package of snaps. If Jefferson returns, Beckham can stay on the practice squad while he learns the offense and proves that his body can still handle NFL work. Either outcome costs Minnesota very little.

The harder question is whether Beckham can still help. His Giants reunion ended almost before it began: three games, no catches and only one target. He did not play at all in 2025, and his last meaningful receiving production came with Baltimore in 2023. At 33, the explosive separation that made him one of football's defining receivers a decade ago cannot simply be assumed to return.

But Minnesota does not need peak Beckham. It needs a receiver who can understand leverage, find space against zone coverage, block competently and punish a defense if it forgets about him. A handful of reliable snaps can matter when a roster is dealing with injuries. The practice squad is the right place to find out whether he can still provide them.

The Vikings' move is best understood as insurance with upside. Beckham gets another chance with a coach who knows him, on an unbeaten team that has a clear short-term need. Minnesota gets a famous veteran without handing him a starting job or forcing a major roster commitment.

If Jefferson is healthy after the upcoming stretch, Beckham may remain a depth piece. If the injuries linger, the path to game-day snaps opens quickly. Either way, the signing says something important about a 4-0 team: Minnesota is not confusing a perfect record with a perfect roster. The Vikings know the passing game needs more options, and Beckham is a cheap way to see whether one of the league's most recognizable receivers has one more useful chapter left.
