Antonelli Tops Madring’s First Friday — Norris Loses FP2 as Madrid Bites Back

Madrid finally has real Formula 1 lap times, and the first full Friday at the new Madring produced exactly the kind of uncertainty a brand-new street circuit was expected to create. Kimi Antonelli ended the day on top for Mercedes, Ferrari closed to within a fraction, Arvid Lindblad became the first F1 driver to crash at the venue, and Lando Norris lost an entire session when McLaren had to change his gearbox.

For a championship leader trying to protect a 66-point advantage over teammate George Russell, Antonelli could hardly have asked for a cleaner start. But the margins behind him suggest Saturday will be far less comfortable. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton put Ferrari within 0.149 seconds of the benchmark, while the combination of walls, traffic and limited overtaking has already made qualifying look like the decisive phase of the weekend.

Antonelli Learns Madring Fastest

Russell set the early reference in first practice with a 1:34.077, leading Antonelli as Mercedes immediately looked comfortable on the unfamiliar circuit. Ferrari followed in third and fourth with Leclerc and Hamilton, giving the opening session a clear picture: Mercedes had the initial edge, but Ferrari was already close enough to matter.

Antonelli moved the target in FP2. His 1:33.662 was 0.113 seconds faster than Leclerc and 0.149 ahead of Hamilton. That is a tiny gap on a circuit where every driver is still discovering braking points, kerbs, track evolution and how much risk can be taken beside the barriers.

The bigger championship detail is that Antonelli did it while Russell slipped to fifth in the second session. After 13 rounds, the Italian has seven wins to Russell's two and carries a 66-point lead. Friday practice does not score points, but on a new track it can reveal who is adapting fastest. So far, the championship leader has answered that question.

Ferrari Is Close Enough to Turn Qualifying Into a Fight

Leclerc and Hamilton staying near the top in both sessions is the clearest warning to Mercedes. Ferrari was third and fourth in FP1, then second and third in FP2. On a normal circuit, a tenth or two in Friday practice can disappear once fuel loads and engine modes change. At Madring, the strategic importance is amplified because passing is expected to be difficult.

That puts extra weight on one-lap execution. A driver who starts behind a slightly slower car may not have an easy route past it on Sunday, so Saturday's grid could shape the race more than usual. Traffic is already another complication. Drivers complained about being blocked, particularly around the final corner and the banked La Monumental section, which means teams will need to manage gaps carefully when the field compresses in qualifying.

Further back, Max Verstappen finished FP2 sixth, Oscar Piastri seventh, Yuki Tsunoda eighth, Esteban Ocon ninth and Liam Lawson tenth. Fernando Alonso brushed the wall and ended the two sessions 15th and 17th, while Carlos Sainz was 17th and 16th in front of his home-city crowd. The order remains fluid, but Mercedes and Ferrari have clearly established the strongest Friday baseline.

Norris Loses the Session Madrid Punishes Most

The most expensive problem of the day may belong to Norris. McLaren changed the reigning champion's gearbox and he missed all of FP2. Losing practice time is never ideal, but at a circuit with no bank of previous F1 data it matters even more. Every lap teaches the driver where the grip is, how the tyres respond and which walls can be approached aggressively.

Norris now has to recover that learning on Saturday while rivals already have two sessions of information. McLaren still had Piastri running in seventh, so the team was not completely blind, but second-hand data cannot replace the driver's own rhythm on a street track.

Lindblad supplied the other reminder of how quickly Madring can punish a mistake. The Racing Bulls rookie lost the rear at Turn 13 and hit the barriers sideways, bringing out the venue's first Formula 1 red flag. He was unhurt and still finished fourth in FP2, which underlined both his pace and the thin margin between a fast lap and a damaged car.

That combination sets up an unusually important qualifying day. Antonelli owns the fastest lap and the championship lead. Ferrari is close enough to attack. Russell needs to reduce a 66-point deficit. Norris has ground to recover. And a circuit that has already produced traffic complaints and one sizeable crash is unlikely to become easier when every driver starts chasing the same few hundredths.
