Christian Leroy Duncan throws a punch during a 2026 UFC middleweight fight

Christian Leroy Duncan Wants the UFC Belt — Brendan Allen Is the Test He Can't Skip

GOATIFY

Christian Leroy Duncan is talking about a UFC middleweight title shot before he has fought his first five-round main event. That sounds ambitious until you look at the division around him. The British striker has won five consecutive fights, climbed into the top ten and now meets fourth-ranked Brendan Allen at UFC Vegas 122 on October 10. Duncan believes a statement victory could put him in the championship conversation immediately. He has also named former champion Dricus du Plessis as a logical next opponent if the belt remains out of reach.

Those possibilities make this more than a routine rankings bout. Duncan's recent progress has been real, but Allen presents a different examination from the opponents who helped build that streak. And even an impressive win cannot erase the contenders already waiting above him.

Duncan's Five-Fight Streak Has Earned Him a Bigger Conversation

Christian Leroy Duncan after July 2026 win over Jared Cannonier

Duncan has reached the point where his next win could change the kind of fights he is offered. The former Cage Warriors champion entered 2026 with momentum and turned it into two important decisions: he beat Roman Dolidze in London in March, then defeated former title challenger Jared Cannonier in Oklahoma City in July. Neither result was a spectacular one-punch finish, but together they answered a useful question about the 31-year-old. He can manage experienced, physically demanding opponents without depending entirely on highlight-reel striking.

Against Cannonier, Duncan won on all three judges' cards, two of them 30-27 and the other 29-28. His movement, range changes and varied attacks helped him control much of the stand-up action even when the veteran tried to slow him down against the fence. Duncan landed 68 significant strikes in that contest, according to the recorded fight statistics. The result extended his winning streak to five and put a recognized former championship challenger on his résumé.

His case for a major opportunity is based on that progression rather than on popularity alone. Dolidze was a ranked obstacle, Cannonier carried a decade of high-level experience, and Allen is now a top-five contender. If Duncan beats all three in one calendar year, the sequence becomes difficult to dismiss as favorable matchmaking. The opponents have different styles, different levels of urgency and different ways of making an athletic striker uncomfortable.

Still, there is an important distinction between entering the title conversation and receiving the next title fight. Duncan has never fought for a UFC championship, and Saturday is his first UFC headliner. A convincing victory could establish him as a genuine contender; it would not automatically make every fighter above him disappear. That is why his comments about both the belt and du Plessis are notable. He is effectively proposing two routes forward: the quickest available championship opportunity, or a former champion who could make his credentials undeniable.

Brendan Allen Can Turn a Striking Showcase Into a Grappling Fight

Brendan Allen fighting Edmen Shahbazyan in June 2026

Allen is the opponent who can complicate the entire plan. He arrives on a three-fight winning streak and has built his reputation on being dangerous in more than one phase. His professional record includes 14 submission victories, and his ability to link clinch exchanges, takedown attempts and ground attacks means Duncan cannot treat this as a pure kickboxing contest. Allen is also willing to pressure opponents on the feet rather than waiting for a perfect wrestling entry.

The American's June decision over Edmen Shahbazyan was an example of that flexibility. Allen kept moving forward, mixed his attacks and won a competitive fight even when the first takedown opportunities did not develop as planned. He had already stopped Reinier de Ridder in 2025 and beaten Marvin Vettori by decision. Those results help explain why a victory over Allen would carry more weight than another win over an opponent on the fringes of the rankings.

For Duncan, the key is not simply defending one shot. He needs to manage the transitions that come after an exchange: a kick that is caught, a punch combination that ends near the fence, or a scramble that begins with his back against the cage. His fast feet and varied kicks are advantages when he controls distance. They become less useful if Allen can make him reset repeatedly while defending grips, body locks and positional changes. A smart Duncan performance would involve disciplined exits, careful shot selection and a willingness to win minutes without chasing a dramatic finish.

Five rounds add another layer. Duncan has said he expects an explosive contest and does not think it will necessarily last into the championship rounds. That is a prediction about how their styles interact, not a guarantee. If Allen survives the early exchanges and forces extended grappling sequences, the questions shift toward energy management and decision-making. If Duncan keeps the bout at his preferred range, Allen will have to absorb a high variety of attacks while searching for entries. The winner may be the fighter who makes the other spend more time solving problems than executing his own plan.

There is no contradiction in Duncan believing he can win quickly while preparing to fight for 25 minutes. In fact, that preparation is essential if he wants to be taken seriously as a future champion. Saturday's result will tell us not just whether he can beat a highly ranked middleweight, but whether his skill set remains reliable when the obvious first plan does not work.

The Title Queue Still Runs Through Strickland, Imavov and Du Plessis

Dricus du Plessis faces Kamaru Usman at July 2026 weigh-in

The other half of Duncan's argument depends on events outside his control. Sean Strickland currently holds the middleweight championship, and Nassourdine Imavov has been positioned as a leading challenger. Reports of a financial dispute around the proposed defense have made the timetable less certain. An unsettled title schedule can create openings for rising contenders, but uncertainty is not the same thing as an available contract.

Imavov has a substantial case of his own. His recent run includes victories over Allen, Israel Adesanya and Caio Borralho. Duncan acknowledged that the French contender could pose problems for Strickland, while also emphasizing how difficult the champion can be to solve. The point is that the division already has a credible challenger whose achievements cannot simply be bypassed because a new contender delivers an exciting performance.

Du Plessis offers a more conventional next step. The former champion returned to the win column against Kamaru Usman in July, taking a unanimous decision over five rounds in Oklahoma City. He has competed at the championship level, carries name recognition and remains a meaningful obstacle for anyone claiming to belong near the top. Duncan has suggested that such a matchup could headline a future UFC London event in early 2027. That is a preference, not an announced booking, but it makes competitive sense if the title picture is already occupied.

A victory over Allen would give Duncan several possible negotiating positions. A decisive finish could amplify calls for an immediate title opportunity if the champion needs an opponent. A hard-fought decision might still justify a clash with du Plessis or another elite contender. A loss would not erase his progress, but it would show exactly which part of his game needs to catch up before he can challenge for the belt. Those are three very different outcomes, and all depend on what actually happens in the cage.

For now, the most useful way to read Duncan's ambition is as a statement of direction. He wants the championship, he knows a former champion could be the bridge, and he understands that Brendan Allen is standing directly between him and either option. The talk has raised the stakes. The performance has to carry them.

UFC Vegas 122 gives Christian Leroy Duncan a chance to turn a strong winning streak into a genuine top-of-the-division claim. But Brendan Allen's grappling, pressure and five-round experience make him the kind of opponent who can expose shortcuts. Even if Duncan wins, the Strickland–Imavov situation and du Plessis's position will shape what happens next. The clearest route is the simplest one: beat Allen convincingly first, then make the UFC decide how high to place him.
