Hamilton Hit the Wall, Bearman Hit It Later — Madring’s FP3 Became a Survival Test
GOATIFYMadring’s first Formula 1 weekend had already looked unforgiving. Final practice turned that reputation into something much harder to ignore.
Lewis Hamilton arrived at the final corner on what had been a seriously quick lap, locked the Ferrari and hit the Tecpro barrier head-on. Nearly 40 minutes later the track finally reopened, only for Ollie Bearman to crash his Haas near the banked La Monumental section and end the session with another red flag.
Somewhere inside the wreckage and interruptions, Kimi Antonelli still found the clean lap everyone else was chasing. The Mercedes driver topped FP3 with a 1:32.797, 0.166 seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc, while Oscar Piastri, Lando Norris and Max Verstappen completed the top five.
The headline time mattered. The bigger warning was how little margin Madrid gave anyone who crossed the limit.
Hamilton’s fastest sector ended in the wall — and Madring kept punishing mistakes
Hamilton’s crash was especially striking because it came during one of his strongest sequences of the weekend. He had just produced the fastest middle sector of the session when he reached the final corner, locked up and went square into the barrier. The Ferrari’s front wing was damaged badly enough to rub against the front-right tyre, which then punctured.
Hamilton found reverse and tried to nurse the SF-26 back toward the pits. Ferrari repeatedly told him to stop. Eventually the instruction became more formal: the FIA wanted the damaged car parked in the safest available place rather than continuing around the circuit with debris and a failing tyre.
The impact also exposed a practical problem with a brand-new venue. Barrier repairs took so long that race control paused the session clock with 15 minutes and 38 seconds remaining. FP3 did not restart until 39 minutes after the red flag. At a track where teams were desperate for every lap of data, the stoppage stripped away a huge portion of the final rehearsal before qualifying.
Once cars returned, the order changed quickly. Leclerc dipped below 1:33 before Antonelli delivered the weekend’s fastest lap to that point. Piastri and Norris moved into third and fourth, Verstappen reached fifth despite completing only seven laps, and George Russell finished sixth.
Then Bearman made the second major mistake. The Haas driver lost the car around Turns 10 and 11 and spun backwards into the outside barrier. The damage to the left-hand side was substantial enough that his team immediately faced a race against time to rebuild the car for qualifying.
Alex Albon had already glanced a barrier earlier in the session and failed to set a time. Carlos Sainz narrowly avoided another impact. Arvid Lindblad was only able to join late after his team repaired the damage from his Friday crash. The pattern was difficult to miss: Madrid was taking expensive bites out of the field.
That gives Antonelli’s benchmark extra value. Being fastest at a new circuit is useful; being fastest while other contenders are losing track time, damaging cars or backing away from the limit is more meaningful. The championship leader managed the same narrow walls that punished Hamilton and Bearman, then produced the lap when the circuit finally reopened.
For Ferrari, Hamilton’s pace before the crash offered encouragement even if the accident complicated the day. For Haas, Bearman’s impact became an immediate repair problem. For the rest of the grid, FP3 delivered a simple message before qualifying and the race: Madring rewards commitment, but it is not offering many second chances.
