Jaylen Brown dribbling for Philadelphia against Jalen Brunson and the Knicks in the 2026 preseason opener

Jaylen Brown’s Sixers Debut Showed Why Philadelphia’s Star Problem Might Be a Luxury

GOATIFY

Jaylen Brown’s first appearance in a Philadelphia uniform offered an immediate glimpse of why the Sixers’ new roster can be so difficult to solve. With LeBron James, Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey all sitting, Brown became the obvious scoring focal point and still needed only 17 minutes to produce 22 points in a 120-97 preseason win over New York.

The more revealing part was how little Philadelphia had to force the offense through him. VJ Edgecombe supplied seven assists, the reserves kept the ball moving, and Brown scored within the flow rather than turning every possession into an isolation. Against a Knicks group that used its regular starters for the first half, that balance made the Sixers’ abundance of perimeter creation look less like a hierarchy problem and more like a luxury.

Brown did not need a full offense built around him to look like a No. 1 option

Brown’s 22 points mattered less than how quickly he found different ways to get them. He missed his first two shots, then settled into the game through the midrange, post touches and aggressive drives before stretching the defense from three. He finished 8-for-13 from the field and 3-for-5 from deep, scoring 13 points in the first quarter and reaching 22 before halftime.

The encouraging detail was that he already showed adaptability. Brown converted from the corner after working through off-ball action, attacked mismatches and moved the ball when New York sent extra attention. Philadelphia does not need another player who requires a full menu of isolations. It needs a wing who can be the first option when stars rest, the second option when matchups favor him and an off-ball finisher when James or Maxey organizes the possession.

That flexibility also matters defensively. Brown should not have to spend every regular-season possession creating from a standstill, which can preserve energy for the point-of-attack assignments that made him valuable in Boston. He blocked Mohamed Diawara shortly after hitting a difficult corner three, a small sequence that captured the two-way version Philadelphia wants. One preseason half cannot prove the fit, but it showed Brown can create efficient offense without needing the roster built around him.

That role also gives Brown a cleaner path through the regular season. He will not need to manufacture every difficult shot if James is initiating, and he can still become the late-clock scorer when a possession breaks down. The opener showed both versions without forcing a choice between them.

It also gives Philadelphia another way to manage difficult matchups. Brown can punish smaller defenders without slowing the offense into repeated isolations, while his shooting keeps help defenders attached when another creator has the ball. That combination should make it easier for the Sixers to vary who initiates without changing the basic spacing around them.

VJ Edgecombe’s seven assists may matter more than his shooting line

Edgecombe’s line was quieter than Brown’s, but it may have been more revealing for the long-term shape of the offense. He scored 12 points on 4-for-9 shooting, missed all three of his three-point attempts and still produced seven assists without turning the ball over. For a second-year guard entering a lineup crowded with established creators, that is useful progress.

His best possessions came when he attacked the paint decisively. Edgecombe used his burst to get downhill, drew help and found teammates rather than treating every drive as a scoring attempt. One possession ended with a pass to a cutting Dillon Jones. Another saw him spin away from pressure and find Caleb Love in the corner before halftime. The shooting remains the swing skill, but a cold night from three matters less when the rest of the decision-making is this clean.

Philadelphia does not need Edgecombe to become a full-time point guard. It needs him to punish the moments when defenses load up on James, Embiid, Maxey or Brown. Seven assists with zero turnovers is exactly the kind of secondary creation that can keep those possessions from becoming predictable.

The context made it more encouraging. Brown and Edgecombe were essentially the only normal starters on the floor, yet Philadelphia built a 72-58 halftime lead against New York’s regulars. That does not make the missing stars irrelevant. It suggests Nurse has more ways to organize possessions than simply staggering one superstar at a time, and preseason gives him room to test how much decision-making Edgecombe can retain when the full lineup returns.

That matters because Edgecombe’s athleticism is most dangerous when he can attack before the defense is set. If the stars draw the first rotation, his job becomes simpler: drive the closeout, make the next pass or finish at the rim. Seven assists suggest he is already seeing those reads earlier.

The win also exposed Philadelphia’s first real pressure point

Jabari Walker attacks for the Philadelphia 76ers

The one development that could matter beyond the exhibition schedule was Hukporti’s injury. The 24-year-old center went down on a non-contact play only five minutes into the game and needed help leaving the floor. Nick Nurse said the issue involved the right Achilles and that imaging would follow.

Philadelphia was already short at center. Embiid sat the opener, Adem Bona is dealing with a foot sprain and Tacko Fall has a hip strain. Once Hukporti exited, Walker became the closest thing to a conventional available center even though he gives up size against many NBA fives. Walker responded with 11 points, 11 rebounds, three made threes, a steal and a block in 19 minutes.

That creates an interesting small-ball option, but using Walker as a change-of-pace five is different from depending on him because the roster has no healthy alternatives. His shooting can open driving lanes for Brown, Edgecombe and James, while his rebounding gives Nurse a chance to survive smaller lineups. The question is whether those strengths can hold up against bigger centers over longer stretches.

The opener therefore produced two different kinds of optimism. On the perimeter, Philadelphia looked deep enough to survive missing stars and still create quality offense. In the middle, one injury immediately exposed how quickly the depth chart can narrow. Hukporti’s imaging will determine whether that is only a warning or an early roster problem. Either way, the Sixers learned where their first pressure point sits.

The Sixers did not unveil their actual starting lineup, so there is no reason to treat 120-97 as a prediction for the season. Brown looked ready to score without monopolizing the ball, Edgecombe looked ready to create even when his jumper was not falling, and the bench supplied enough shooting and playmaking to keep the game moving.

The more important point is optionality. Philadelphia can ask Brown to carry a scoring stretch without making him the permanent offensive hub. It can let Edgecombe attack a tilted floor without handing him full-time point-guard responsibility. Once James, Maxey and Embiid return, Nurse can choose which creator starts the possession instead of forcing the same action every trip.

Now the useful preseason questions change. Philadelphia needs to see how Brown’s off-ball work fits beside James and Maxey, how much creation Edgecombe retains when the full lineup returns and whether the center rotation can stabilize after Hukporti’s injury. The first night did not prove the Sixers are ready. It showed why their ceiling is so high — and where the first pressure point has already appeared.

There is another reason the opener matters: the Sixers now have evidence that their offense can survive nights when the rotation is incomplete. Brown created efficient points, Edgecombe created shots for others, and the reserves kept the ball moving. That is not a substitute for the stars, but it can reduce the number of regular-season possessions that require James or Embiid to solve everything.

The next exhibition games should therefore be judged less by wins and losses than by combinations. Can Brown stay efficient when his usage falls? Can Edgecombe keep making fast reads with fewer touches? Can Walker hold up defensively if he has to play center? Those answers will tell Philadelphia much more than another preseason final score.
