His goal rewarded the sort of direct movement Liverpool want from players trying to break into an attack already crowded with expensive and established options.
That is the hidden value of a cup performance like this. A manager does not simply learn who can score against a rotated opponent. He learns which players can execute the same principles when the familiar combinations are removed. Liverpool’s depth looked less like a collection of backups and more like an alternative version of the first team.
Szoboszlai keeps turning rotation nights into leverage
Szoboszlai is in a different category. He is not trying to prove he belongs at this level; he is trying to make himself unavoidable. The Hungarian’s ability to influence games from multiple midfield roles gives Iraola a luxury that becomes more valuable when the schedule compresses.
His contribution against Tottenham continued a broader pattern. Szoboszlai can change the temperature of a match without needing the entire team to be built around him. He can carry the ball through pressure, arrive around the box, strike from range and give Liverpool another set-piece threat. When a heavily rotated lineup contains one or two players with that level of authority, younger teammates have a much easier platform.
It also sharpens the selection fight. Liverpool have spent heavily to improve the squad, and competition for attacking and midfield minutes is supposed to be uncomfortable. A cup tie is useful precisely because it gives players outside the automatic league XI a chance to make the manager’s next decision harder.

The League Cup suddenly matters to Liverpool’s bigger season
Liverpool do not need the League Cup to define their season. That is exactly why this performance is useful. The competition can become a laboratory for the players who are one injury, one suspension or one tactical change away from major responsibility.
Koumas scoring against Tottenham gives Iraola evidence. Szoboszlai producing in a changed side gives him reassurance. A group of fringe players maintaining the team’s intensity gives him permission to rotate again. Each of those outcomes has value when league and European fixtures begin arriving every few days.
There is also a psychological edge. Big squads only stay healthy when players believe good performances can actually change the hierarchy. If cup minutes feel ceremonial, competition fades. If a 3-1 win over Tottenham can genuinely earn someone a league start or a bigger role, training gets sharper and selection becomes harder.
Liverpool’s expensive rebuild was always going to be judged by trophies. But the path to those trophies is usually less glamorous: a teenager taking his chance, a senior midfielder dominating a supposedly secondary fixture, and a manager discovering that his bench can carry the same idea as his starters.
