Team USA Just Tore Up Its Ryder Cup Points System — and 2026 No Longer Counts
GOATIFYTeam USA has changed the way it will build its 2027 Ryder Cup roster, and the biggest shift is simple: what happened in 2026 will not help anyone qualify automatically.
The new system starts the points race at The American Express in January 2027 and runs through the BMW Championship in August. That wipes away the old advantage created by major-championship and Players Championship results from the year before the Ryder Cup, while also ending the direct link between qualification points and prize money. For Jim Furyk, the goal is obvious: arrive at Adare Manor with the six automatic qualifiers who are playing their best golf closest to the event, not players carrying points banked a year earlier.
It is a meaningful reset for a U.S. team trying to win in Europe for the first time since 1993. The Ryder Cup is scheduled for September 17-19, 2027 at Adare Manor in Ireland, and the Americans will again face the problem that has followed them for three decades: turning individual star power into a team that travels well.
The new points system puts 2027 form first
Under the revised structure, 31 events will count toward automatic qualification. Majors carry the most weight, with 3,000 points to the winner. The Players Championship winner receives 2,850, winners of signature events and selected FedEx Cup events earn 2,250, and a standard full-field PGA Tour victory is worth 1,500. Players who make the cut and complete eligible events receive points on a sliding scale, while opposite-field events do not count.
That is a cleaner system than tying the standings to money. PGA Tour purses have become increasingly uneven, particularly between signature events and ordinary tournaments, so using dollars as a proxy for Ryder Cup value could distort the standings. A fixed points table lets the U.S. decide how much each category of event should matter instead of letting purse size make that decision indirectly.
The other major change is the removal of all 2026 results. Under the previous structure, a player could build a useful Ryder Cup cushion by winning a major or The Players in the off-year. Now, every automatic-qualification point must come from 2027.
That puts a premium on current form. A player who peaks during the 2026 major season but struggles the following summer will not be protected by an old points bank. Conversely, someone who makes a major jump in 2027 can move quickly without needing to erase another player's head start.
Young, Clark and Furyk show why the change matters
The immediate examples are Cameron Young and Wyndham Clark. Young won the 2026 Players Championship, while Clark won the 2026 U.S. Open. Under the old model, results of that size could have provided a meaningful early boost toward the next Ryder Cup. Under the new rules, both start 2027 from zero with everyone else.
That does not make the system anti-major or anti-star. In fact, majors remain the most valuable individual events once qualifying begins. It simply asks a different question: who is playing like a Ryder Cup automatic selection during the Ryder Cup year?
That distinction matters because Furyk still controls half of the roster. The top six players in the standings after the BMW Championship qualify automatically, and Furyk will then make six captain's picks. Keeping the 6-and-6 split gives the captain room to account for factors a points table cannot fully measure: recent form, injuries, course fit, partnerships, match-play temperament and the specific challenge of winning away from home.
The timing also reduces the chance that Furyk gets boxed in by a player whose best stretch came too early. If a golfer dominates in spring 2027 and remains strong through summer, the points system should reward him. If another player surges late but finishes outside the top six, the captain still has enough flexibility to bring him to Ireland.
That flexibility will be crucial at Adare Manor. Europe has won every Ryder Cup it has hosted since the Americans' victory at The Belfry in 1993. The U.S. has repeatedly arrived with elite individual talent and still found that road match play is a different problem. The 2027 system does not guarantee a better team, but it makes the selection process more deliberately about the players Furyk has in front of him that year.
The most interesting consequence may not show up until next summer. Every major, signature event and late-season playoff week will now carry a more immediate selection implication. There is no 2026 safety net. A former champion can be passed. A rising player can force his way in. And every golfer chasing an automatic place will know that the standings are measuring the season that actually leads into the Ryder Cup.
For Team USA, that is the point of the overhaul. Furyk is not trying to reward the best American golf résumé across two seasons. He is trying to identify the six strongest automatic choices for one week in Ireland, then use his six picks to complete a team capable of ending one of the sport's longest-running road droughts.
