Carlos Alcaraz celebrating during the 2026 Japan Open in Tokyo

Carlos Alcaraz Found His Best Tennis in Tokyo — and the Timing Matters

Carlos Alcaraz did not need a dramatic comeback in the Japan Open final. Against Jiri Lehecka in Tokyo, he survived a tight opening set, took the tiebreak 7-4 and then found the decisive break in the second to win 7-6(4), 6-4 and successfully defend the title.

The scoreline matters less than the timing. Alcaraz arrived at the final after a week that demanded adjustment and patience, then produced his cleanest tennis when the trophy was on the line.

Alcaraz turned a tight final into a controlled title defense

The opening set was the part of the final that asked the most questions. Lehecka served aggressively, refused to let Alcaraz settle into easy return games and had enough first-strike power to keep the rallies from becoming entirely Spanish territory. Alcaraz still found ways to make the Czech play one more ball and gradually increased the pressure on second serves.

The tiebreak captured the difference. Lehecka had the weapons to stay level, but Alcaraz was sharper in the points that carried the most weight. He took the breaker 7-4, turning a set that had remained balanced into a one-set advantage without needing to dominate every game.

That is an increasingly important part of Alcaraz's profile. His highlight shots can make matches look chaotic, but his best tournament wins often come from the opposite quality: patience. He does not need to force the spectacular option when the scoreboard is still neutral. He can stay close, protect his own service games and wait until an opponent gives him a small opening.

The second set was the reward for that patience. Once Alcaraz broke, the pressure shifted completely onto Lehecka. The Czech continued to serve well enough to stay competitive, but he no longer had the scoreboard freedom he enjoyed early. Alcaraz could attack returns, vary the height and pace of rallies and use the drop shot without needing every aggressive choice to land.

The larger value of Tokyo is that the title arrived through several different kinds of matches. Earlier in the week Alcaraz had to recover from uneven stretches and solve changing conditions. In the final he was able to win without turning the match into a shot-making exhibition. Lehecka was a useful opponent for that test because his serve and flat groundstrokes can take time away quickly.

That pattern matters for the rest of the season. The late-season calendar rewards players who can hold serve efficiently and make small return opportunities count. Alcaraz will not always get the open court or the extended defensive exchange that lets his athleticism overwhelm an opponent. Tokyo showed he can still win when the margins are narrower.

There is also value in defending a title. Returning as the favorite means every opponent knows what worked for you the year before and arrives with nothing to lose. Alcaraz handled that pressure across the week and finished it with his most composed performance. The trophy is another line on an already crowded résumé. The more interesting takeaway is the way it was won: stay level, find the opening, then make it decisive.

Tokyo did not reveal a new version of Alcaraz. It showed the value of the version everyone already knows: explosive when he needs to be, patient when the match asks for it, and increasingly comfortable turning small openings into decisive runs.

Lehecka made him work for the first set, but once Alcaraz took the tiebreak, the final tilted. Retaining the Japan Open is another title on the list. The stronger signal is that his best level appeared exactly when the tournament demanded it.
