Kimi Antonelli Storms from 19th to Win the Italian Grand Prix at Monza
GOATIFYKimi Antonelli produced one of the defining drives of the 2026 Formula 1 season at Monza, turning a back-row start into a home Grand Prix victory that dramatically strengthened his grip on the Drivers' Championship.
The Mercedes driver started the Italian Grand Prix 19th after a power-unit penalty and still reached the chequered flag first, passing team-mate and title rival George Russell in the closing laps. Max Verstappen finished third for Red Bull, while Ferrari's home race unraveled almost immediately when Charles Leclerc crashed heavily on lap two.
Antonelli's victory made him the first Italian driver to win the Italian Grand Prix at Monza since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966. It also extended his championship advantage over Russell to 66 points after 13 rounds, turning what began as a damage-limitation weekend into one of the biggest swings of the year.
Antonelli Turned P19 Into a Front-Running Position Almost Immediately
Antonelli's race looked compromised before it even began. Mercedes had taken new power-unit components, sending the championship leader to the rear despite qualifying much higher. On a circuit where clean air and straight-line efficiency matter enormously, starting 19th should have turned the afternoon into a recovery exercise.
Instead, the recovery became the race.
Antonelli gained seven places before the first major interruption. At the front, Pierre Gasly had started from a surprise pole for Alpine, with Russell alongside him and Ferrari's Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton immediately behind. Russell moved into the lead early, while Leclerc's race ended when he lost control exiting the final corner and hit the barriers on lap two.
The crash brought out a red flag, and by the time the field returned to the pits Antonelli had already climbed to 12th. That early progress changed the possibilities of the afternoon. A driver expected to spend half the race fighting through traffic was now within striking distance of the leading group before the race had properly settled.
At the restart, Antonelli chose medium tyres and attacked again. He moved into the top 10 almost immediately, then began picking off cars quickly enough that by the middle of the opening phase he was already part of the fight behind Russell and Verstappen.
By lap 16, after Russell had reclaimed the lead from Verstappen, Antonelli passed the Red Bull for second. Two laps later, he briefly moved ahead of Russell. A 19th-place start had become a Mercedes intra-team battle for victory in less than half a race.
Mercedes' Russell-Antonelli Duel Became the Center of the Race
Once Antonelli reached Russell, Mercedes had a new problem. The team's two title contenders were fighting each other while Verstappen remained close enough to benefit from any mistake.
The 2026 cars made the duel especially unusual. Different battery-deployment patterns allowed the Mercedes drivers to exchange positions repeatedly, creating a back-and-forth fight rather than one clean pass followed by separation. Antonelli would attack, Russell would respond, and Verstappen stayed close enough to keep Mercedes from simply letting the pair race without limits.
The pit wall eventually tried to calm the situation and create space to the Red Bull behind. The intention was clear: avoid wasting time fighting each other while another contender remained within range.
The decisive strategic moment came when Lance Stroll stopped and triggered a Virtual Safety Car around lap 28. Antonelli pitted for another set of medium tyres. Verstappen also stopped. Russell stayed out on his existing hard tyres.
That choice gave Russell track position but created the central question of the final 20 laps: could the older tyres last long enough to protect the lead from a faster Antonelli?
Antonelli and Verstappen initially rejoined behind several cars, but both cut through the traffic quickly. By lap 37, Antonelli was within roughly 10 seconds of Russell. As the laps disappeared, the gap kept falling. Russell's pace remained strong, but the tyre difference was becoming harder to hide.
Verstappen Stayed in the Fight While Ferrari's Home Race Fell Apart
Behind the two Mercedes drivers, Verstappen remained the biggest threat for much of the race. The four-time champion had briefly led after passing Russell but could not keep the Mercedes pair behind once the race pace settled.
Even so, third place represented a useful recovery from a weekend that never looked fully under Red Bull's control. Verstappen reported rear-end problems during the race and still stayed close enough to force Mercedes to think carefully about how aggressively Antonelli and Russell should fight each other.
McLaren's battle was even tighter at the finish. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri fought over fourth place late in the race, with both running off track during the final phase before Norris eventually finished just ahead of his team-mate.
Ferrari's afternoon was far worse. Leclerc's lap-two crash immediately removed one car from contention in front of the home crowd. Hamilton, who had been fighting Leclerc at the start, dropped down the order after running wide and never recovered enough pace to challenge for the podium. He finished sixth.
Pierre Gasly's shock pole also faded quickly in race conditions. The Alpine driver lost the lead to Russell early and gradually fell behind the faster Mercedes, Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari machinery, eventually finishing seventh.
The contrast across the front of the field made Antonelli's drive even more striking. Several established stars and leading teams had their own opportunities ruined by crashes, tyre management or outright pace. The 20-year-old started behind nearly all of them and still reached the front.
Antonelli Recovered From One Last Mistake and Took the Win
By lap 47, Antonelli was within a second of Russell. The win appeared to be moving toward him, but the final challenge was not clean.
On lap 49, he attacked at the first chicane and ran through the gravel, losing more than a second and seemingly giving Russell the breathing room he needed. It would have been easy for the failed move to become the story of the closing laps.
Antonelli erased the mistake almost immediately.
One lap later, with Russell's hard tyres continuing to fade, the Italian closed rapidly down the straight and completed the decisive pass before Ascari. Once ahead, he pulled clear and finished 3.857 seconds in front of his team-mate. Verstappen crossed the line third, more than 10 seconds further back.
The result carried historic weight beyond the championship. Antonelli became the first Italian to win the Italian Grand Prix at Monza since Scarfiotti did it for Ferrari 60 years earlier. He also became only the second driver in Formula 1 history to win a Grand Prix from as far back as 19th or lower on the grid, behind John Watson's win from 22nd in 1983.
For the title race, the numbers are just as important. Antonelli now has 267 points to Russell's 201, giving him a 66-point lead. Lewis Hamilton sits another 10 points behind Russell. With the championship moving next to the new Madrid circuit, the Mercedes youngster is no longer simply protecting a narrow advantage. He has created a cushion big enough to change how the rest of the season is raced.
The performance also confirmed why Antonelli has become the center of the 2026 championship. He won from the back, survived a red flag, passed Verstappen and Russell on track, took advantage of the VSC strategy, recovered from a late mistake and delivered the result under the pressure of his home Grand Prix.
Monza was supposed to be the race where his engine penalty limited the damage. Instead, it became the race that may eventually define his championship.
